ok so how is science a religion?

A religion is basically, something you accept without question.

How many people here have bothered to verify whether Force is really Mass times Aceleration?

You took the statements of numerous high-school teachers, physics profs, private tutors, elder siblings at face value.

Who in turn did the same to their respective teachers.

You're a fucking idiot. One can very easily test f=ma. Measure somethings mass, measure it's acceleration from a collision with a consistent force (reciprocating saw blades against a pool ball work nice). Then, to prove that f=ma, repeat the experiment with an object of different mass. The force will remain the same, so if the mass is smaller, GASP!, the acceleration increases just the right amount for the calculated force of both experiments to be almost equal! Who'd have thought decades of physicists might actually be right with all their zaney experiments!

Religion = Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe

Science = The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena

Your definitions are rather incorrect. Religion is belief in a supernatural power. science is the belief in unatural and natural explanations or Phenomena.

What your trying to argue; everyone should have a critical viewpoint of the world. but in no way does it prove that science is a religion.

A religion is defined by the fact that it atempts to answer the question of what comes after death. Not only does science not do that, but science doesn't give answers. It's a method with which people try to answer questions.

I think he's saying that people are too quick to believe things. You should find the truth for yourself. Modern "science" does not know eveything. The world's best scientists couldn't figure out how bumblebees flew until about 3 years ago.

It's just that there have been no exceptions observed. Doesn't mean that they don't exist. Any scientific laws/theorems are built around the basic axioms.(which by definition are unprovable)

But that's beside the point.

The point I am trying to make... actually not a point, it's just an observation. Arrggghhh... Fucking semantics again.

The point I am trying to make is this.

Science and religion are both attempts to explain the forces of nature. Religion tries to do this by means of a supernatural being. Science., through a set of laws.

If i were a psychologist, I would say that the data for science and religion reside in the "PARENT" parts of the psyche. And not in the "ADULT" and "PARENT" parts respectively.

I am not saying that we should think for ourselves. I have just observed that we don't.

I hope am clearer this time.

I know you're trying to say something. But what?

Oh dear. Force = Mass x Acceleration BY DEFINITION. Any shape that does not have 3 internal angles that total 180 degrees IS NOT A TRIANGLE. Saying you can't prove either of these is a bit like saying you can't prove that all batchelors are unmarried men.

Saying that 1+1=2 is only assumed to be true because we've yet to find a situation where 1+1 doesnt equal 2 is a VERY weak argument.

As manjiBoy said, it's true by definition.

1N = 1kg * 1m/s^2 because the Newton is defined as 1kg*m/s^2

quote:Neither prove that the sum of the angles of a triangle are 180 degree. You just fucking can't.

Take a straight-edge. Draw yourself a triangle. Cut out the triange and cut out each corner separately. Put your three angles beside each other. You now have a 180 degree angle. Slight variations might happen, but only because you can't draw or cut very well.

Except science actually has some force of truth behind it; when was the last time somebody built a machine that allowed them to go into space on the principles of a religion?

quote:I am not saying that we should think for ourselves. I have just observed that we don't.

Of course we should think for ourselves; however, there is a difference between thinking for yourself and rejecting things that are true because you think you're hardcore.

Hardly. People have added 1 and 1 for thousands of years.

And inductive logic is what all of science is based on. Gravity is only assumed to be true because we've yet to find a situation where things don't fall towards objects of large mass. If such a situation is found, the theory must be modified or discarded.

Now, show me a religion that is built to modify itself when it's not aligned to reality.

2. Religion is not.

geez, saying science is something u accept without question. the sole means of collecting scientific data is through questioning, experimenting, and observation. got a question? form a hypothesis and thoroughly test it out. even unprovable (or currently unproven) things such as gravity as craftian mentioned are backed by lots of evidence and concurrent observation.

religion, on the other hand, seems to be devoid of all that. got questions? the answer is god. this conveniently all powerful being that can be used to write off any possible question. bad shit happening in the world? it's cuz god works in mysterious ways. did humans and apes evolve from a common ancestor? no god created us all. u don't believe? aren't u capable of faith u heathen?

nope... science and religion don't sound very much alike at all sorry.

I was telling you that Science isn't a religion by definition, dipshit. And I've proven that F=MA myself. It's called a high school physics lab. Any "just accept that it's right without any proof" in science is simply because you're too lazy to read the proof, or to do the experiment yourself. Dumbass.

Time for me to give a Newtonian demonstration

of a bullet, it's mass, and accelleration.
