M: I am dead already.
Q: ? In what sense?
M: I am double dead. Not only dead to my body, but to my mind too.
Q: Well, you do not look dead at all!
M: That's what you say! You seem to know my
state better than I do!
Q: Sorry. But I just do not understand. You say you are bodiless and mindless while I see you very much alive and articulate.
M: A tremendously complex work is going on all the time in your brain and body, are you conscious of it? Not at all. Yet for an outsider all seems to be going on intelligently and purposefully. Why not admit that ones entire personal life may sink below the threshold of consciousness and yet proceed sanely and smoothly?
Q: Is it normal?
M: What is normal? Is your life -- obsessed by desires and fears, full of strife and struggle, meaningless and joyless -- normal? To be torn by feelings, tortured by thoughts: Is it normal? A healthy body, a healthy mind live largely unperceived by their owner: only occasionally, through pain and suffering they call for attention and insight. Why not extend the same to the entire personal life? One can function rightly, responding well and fully to whatever happens, without having to bring it into focus of awareness. When self-control becomes second nature, awareness shifts its focus to deeper levels of existence and action.
Q: Don't you become a robot?
M: What harm is there in making automatic, what is habitual and repetitive? It is automatic anyhow. But when it is chaotic, it causes pain and suffering and calls for attention. The entire purpose of a clean and well ordered life is to liberate man from the thralldom of chaos and the burden of sorrow.
Q: You seem to be in favor of a computerized life.
M: What is wrong with a life that is free from problems? Personality is merely a reflection of the real. Why should not the reflection be true to the original as a matter of course, automatically? Need the person have any designs of its own? The life of which it is an expression will guide it. Once you realize that the person is merely a shadow of the reality, but not reality itself, you cease to fret and worry. You agree to be guided from within and life becomes a journey into the unknown.

I'm indifferent about it, life is here and now, death is when I die, when I die it will be the here and now so there is no point in being scared or wondering how long I have left

why should we fear death: death is the only inevitability in life. we cant be certain that anything else is going to happen. why should we fear death when death could be but a few seconds away, therefore should we fear the future and live our lives in fear of that which is inevitable and cannot be stopped (sp?).
life is just one cycle of decay, everyday you grow closer to your death. we are all the same decaying organic matter

Only atheists fear death. But then they do have a kind of martyr complex about themselves...

Thats a pretty assumptive statement there. Not all atheists fear death. some accept it all as it comes, like the guy above who is indifferent to it all.

I don't fear death, I fear dying (if that makes any form of sense) Like, I don't exactly fear being dead, but the fact that their could be serial killer with a chiansaw in my closet would scare me, as being hacked to bits by a chainsaw doesn't seem all to appealing.

The only fear I have about death is dying early in life or dying without doing everything I wanted to do in my life.

Well thats crap. Im an atheist and I dont fear death and I do not have a martyr complex. Why do you persist in bringing people down around you? Let people be who they want to be! I dont fear death. I believe once you are dead that is it, you dont know anymore, so there isnt a problem!

This is an interesting question. Most of the time I do not fear death, nor do I fear dying. But sometimes I will think about it and become fearful and scared. In most cases though, I would have to say I dont.

It's not death people fear, it's the thought of being dead and/or dying.
When you're actually dead, all those concerns simply vanish...
..along with all other brain-dependent activity.

Am I afraid of death? No not really. Should I be? Seriously...everyone dies, get used to the idea and live while you can. DOn't ponder death, you can't change it. Ponder something like...religion, sports, booze, ass...whatever. To ponder death is to waste time on life.

No, I don't fear death. Actually, I'm kind of curious as to what, if anything, happens when I do die.
As for the fear of pain, that doesn't exist in me. Someone once said that pain/pleasure are a cycle that everything goes through. I myself have always wondered if that meant that one could find pleasure in pain. After a great deal of experimentation (i.e. cigarettes against flesh, cutting, piercing, etc.) I have found that all pain is in some way pleasurable. Some of you might just say that I'm a masochist, but this idea goes deeper than some sexual fetish, as my friends have found this pain-pleasure.
All one needs to do is accept two facts:
1. One WILL experience pain, it is inevitable, so instead of fearing pain, one should learn from it.
2. Pain, like everything else in existence, eventually ends, so one can find some comfort in the knowledge that their suffering will stop.

Death is to life as an orgasm is to sexual intercourse... you shouldn't fear it, but you shouldn't hurry it on either. When the time cums  just sit back and enjoy.

" Imagine all the people..... living forward to death...."
-John Lennon, Imagine
what he means is because of religion people look forward to death, causing kamikazi's and suicide bombers to kill and die cause they think that they will live after this life. You can't bring what happens after death into life. You can't mix it. If it is true than those are two different lives, not one.
If you think of death from a logic point of view, you have no conscious or thoughts, feelings, no existence, then it will be scary. You can't trust people that say that after death you will have wonderful existence with virgins. have they been dead? Obviously no.

Were all doomed! Sometimes I envy the dead as they don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to bust their arses for paychecks that lose ground against the cost of living every year, even if you get a raise. What the fuck is the fucking point of it all, we bust arse 8 hours a day 5 days a fucking week, for what? So we can pay to exist, and make someone else rich! To make, produce, ship, sell products which are killing our planet!
I'm tired of this drudgery called life, thank God for drugs and alcohol. To all you teenagers out there still living under your
parents roof with no responsibilities, enjoy it while you can! (It's all downhill from there )

Yeah, but it's only scary from an "outside looking in" perspective.
When you are dead, the part of you that fears death is dead also. You are just out of there.
As i said before, you just revert to your preconcieved state.
Did you fear the eons of nonexistence before you were born? No. You couldn't. The same situation will apply after death.
So it's only while your living that you can fear death, which is understandable seeing as the human survival instinct is the strongest instinct of them all which causes the natural fear of death.
It is because of this understanding that I tend not to have a fear of death.
And like I said before, it's not the actual death that is feared, it is the dying and the thought of being dead. When you're dead, you're finito. You are erased. Your existence, for all individual intents and purposes, has effectively been annulled.
Not only do you not exist then, but it is like you never did. The exception would be that which you changed or influenced on this earth during the short time that you were here.
Now I'm not going to lie, I might freak out on my deathbed when all my emotions and instincts are flooding me like a raging rapid, or I might accept the inevitable, keep a cool head about the situation, and embrace my return to oblivion, never to exist in any way, shape, or form again.
