| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Cracking a password on windows 2000 pro. Built on NT tech.
Yeah, basically I start up the computer and then it asks for a password (not BIOS) just a general username password prompt. How can I remove this password? It's not the administrator (I think) and there are no other accounts. thanks

You could at least try Google, dude.
Ophcrack - Burn the ISO, put it in the drive and reboot. After a couple secs you have the passwords for all the accounts.
Or.. Use Metasploit to get in via a MSRPC DCOM exploit, bind a shell.. upload a tool like pwdump3 via ftp or tftp, run it from the shell and dump to a file. Then bring the file home and run John on it.
Ophcrack is quick and easy if you have the bandwidth. Metasploit is better if you want to learn something.

Learn what exactly? Other then that MSRPC DCOM exploit is patched for most machines out there. Metasploit is a useful tool but it doesn't exactly contain any profound knowledge.
But I agree Ophcrack would do the job, or try with the default administrator login.

Metasploit contains so much exploit source! Learn by reading and watching
Seriously, watch Metasploit with Wireshark (Ethereal) to get an idea of how things work if you're a "n00b".
True, if they patch the machines at all semi-annually then MSRPC won't be vulnerable.
And the default administrator password isn't set, is it? Just hit enter, like in WinXP?

True but it would help people more to get some basic knowledge before tampering with a tool.

Correct.

The BIOS are probably password locked. A two second google search gave me this.

I'm pretty sure you have internet access. Screw the metasploit for now, just download the Ophcrack iso (http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/)... she's free.

Re: Cracking a password on windows 2000 pro. Built on NT tech.
chntpw (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/) is a godsend in situations like this. Two years ago, I pulled one of my computers out of storage (I was homeless at the time, crashing at friends houses, and had my shit in a storage unit) that I hadn't used in over a year. I had forgotten the password, so I broke out my chntpasswd floppy, blanked the pass, and was good to go. The comp was 2KPro.
Anyway, chntpw is a Linux boot disk that fits on a floppy that allows you to change the password of any user you want (admin included), or (recommended) blank it.
Works wonderfully on NT and 2K. I never got a chance to try it on XP, though, but since your target is 2K, it doesn't really matter does it
