Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default best ways to encrypt a username and password

i got a program going, and i'm trying to tweak around the part that saves a username and password for future use. my prog outputs a text file with the username and password, but its encrypted (somewhat). it breaks it to bytes, converts to int, and I do a lot of calculations with those numbers to change it around. then my prog can read in from that text file, and do the reverse process to get back to the original strings.

i don't know if that would be really considered "encryption" but that's all i got for now. anyone got suggestions?

RSA encryption... It's pretty hard to crack. distributed.net has a shitload of computers worldwide trying to crack a 72 bit key for about 2 something years now, and that's only 72 bits. The average RSA key usually is 1024 or 2048. =p

Edit: Do you really need the best?

What you're doing isn't exactly encryption. It's more like obfuscation of the data. All you need to know is a series of steps to get the data clear text.

well i'm not extactly trying to hide stuff from the NSA or anything, it was just simple calculations to change the way data looks. i don't know about RSA, that looks hardcore

I know. You asked if you're doing real encryption, so I responded. I understand that your implementation is relative to your needs.
