Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default Cell phone programs

Has anyone here heard of J2ME? It's a Java technology that enables someone to write programs for any cell phone that has Java installed on it, so thats basically every "newer" type of phone. I got my hands on the free J2ME Wireless Toolkit. Let's say that I've been playing around with it and I managed to install the app on my phone and I can get all the info about that phone (i.e. phone number, serial number, phone version, and everybody in the contact list). And I can have that info all text messaged back to me. I can easily turn this prog toward the malicious side of programming, but what else should I do with it?

make it like a worm. maybe somehow get free calls with it? if you cant, be willing to spend like $30 and make it send a virus to everyone on your contact list. the worm will, change their background, use all their credit call random numbers, (be creative here)

but if their on your contact list, chances are your on theirs. so you might wanna do something about that.

wow, i'm glad someone found interest in this. the thing is i dont want anything to happen to the people in my contact list.

1. its people that i know

2. it'll easily get traced back to me.

i need to get my hands on a random cell phone and let it spread.

Well, as I stated in a pervious thread, I am not hear to teach you about morals. I would strongly encourage you to use your new knowledege in a useful way rather than maliciously but what you decide do is your call.

I dont have much expirience with Java so I dont know exactly what you could do. But what I do know is, you may be one of the people who have stumbled upon a new era of cell phone techonolgy.

pretty soon, cell phone will require virus protection on it. can you imagine norton antivirus on your phone? the code i have now doesn't do anything bad, its capable of gathering info and sending it back to me. but if i'm able to write malicious programs, i would be able to find a way to stop it. kinda like those hackers turned network security gurus, heh

lets say the average person has 60-70 contacts on their phone, and maybe half of them are actual cell phones, those would be the phones that are vulernable to such a worm. and those phones relay all the info back to the main phone. this seems too easily traceable. i would have to find phones that are able to send emails, but then that would also limit the phones vulernable, then i need several accounts that just forward incoming messages to each other. bahhh its getting messy.

this is taking too much thinking and its late

Could you modify to send peoples texts back to you? If so embed it in a program which "needs" web access so that it can send the info to somewhere on the internet. This would have to be device independent probably. Dont make it spread itself though, that will be your downfall.

Then you have a nice tool to send to your partner/friend/boss/etc.
