| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
What was the worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience that anyone ever experienced?
Even the best can experience stuff like that. For example, our Nortan Antivirus doesn't detect anything if we try deleting the C drive using batch.

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
One time when I was reinstalling XP I forgot to install a firewall and I got hit with MSBlast and I had to change the settings so I didn't shutdown after a minute. It was a total bitch when I had to restart the computer unneededly. I wasn't fast enough to do the shortcut thingy to cancel the shutdown. =(

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
blaster worm I agree.
I had to switch the rpc program to not shutdown after 1 minute of it not responding and then edit the 6 registry entries that had been created each woith a different name, plus delete all the file associated with the file/worm.
I got an update finally from microsoft.com and said fuckit and installed Norton Anti Virus, which cleared any remnants of the program up.
The blaster had manifested itself so far that there was an extra login account ready to be broken into.

I wrote one that shut down a computer lab during final project week.
That was very ammusing.
In the end, they moved from netware to a linux/samba based solution, so mission accomplished.

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
I have this one dumb brother who always gets on porn sites and keeps AcviveX and active scripting on, getting us tons of spyware. I would always remove a lot, but it kept reappearing. It turned out that some undetected one would download more during booting but before my firewall loaded, so to solve it I unplugged my cable modem during booting though he didn't. One time there were almost ten items adaware could not remove repeatedly so I had to go out of my way and setup autoexec.bat to delete them before windows loaded and them with it. I now have that computer since he got a new one and don't have it online yet and maybe never will.

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever...
Was mostly my fault.
Got my new computer and had 'em try a Dvd card in it to see if there was any difference in play, which there wasn't so they left it out.
Good so far, no problems, then I let my cousin, a sysadm for his career look at it and poke around a little.
I learned.
He saw the "ghost" that was left in the Device Manager and just couldn't let it be.
Here is where it turns into my fault:
He said "Let me fix that"
I said "Why, it ain't buggin nothin"
Yada yada, begging, finaly let him do it.
Oops, now it doesn't even boot.
Four hours later it was up and runnin again.
But kinda diferent, couldn't really put my finger on it, then I started playin Civ 3, OK, I got it know, it's runnin real slow, the farther I got in the game, the slower it went, I hadn't even got past the middle ages yet and it was taking 15-20 minutes a turn(at that point in the game it was usally takin 30 seconds to 2 minutes a turn) so I do the fuck bill salute (Alt, Del, Ctrl) and find two of my game runnin, along with two of everything else, There were Two OSs' running at the same time, and when I Reinstalled the game(Part of that Four hours) it got sent to both C drives, for a lack of a better way to put it, Christ, there were even Two pageswaps goin.
Needless to say I had to fix it, and he is no longer allowwed to touch any part of "My Baby", ever.
How the fuck he got two OSs' runnin at the same time is completely beyond me, fuck I saw it, I fixed it, and it still baffles me. And no it wasn't a dual boot situation, if it was it wouldn't have installed the game to both Program files, registries, etc., let alone two Pagefiles.
(to his credit however, he did remove that "Ghost", Bless his soul...<cough>Bastard<cough>, and it was a nice excuse to completely tear my machine apart on the secound day I had it )

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
back in the days of having just one computer (mom's shared between me, mom, and sister) mom would always download random shit. that computer, still running today, has had Windows 98 reinstalled 6 times one it because of virii. time and time again ridding the computer of virii and fixing problems was really good for helping me learn the Windows system, sinse I was new to computers.
how devistating it was to repreatively lose EVERYTHING i had on the computer. i had to save ALL my stuff onto some 45 floppies every other week as backup. sinse then, i have really learned the value of firewalls, maintence, virus scanning, screening downloads, ect. my new-ish laptop is a varitable fortress and nobody touches it.

Shutdown -a never occur to you?
Did to me, I just had a batch that ran every minute (did shutdown -a twice, 50 sec wait).
It worked and then I got the fix/patch for the damn evil thing.

uhm kid, she said didn't get that done fast enough.
and when you're as good as grammar you can be sarcastic.
personally as a noob i take comfort in the fact that even people like zonko and grammar(both of whom are light years ahead of me in knowledge) have the occaisonal 'stupidity spasm'.
ps. if you weren't being sarcastic i apologise. next time try using a :P !

CoolWebSearch is a bitch to remove. Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware and CWShredder wouldn't remove it comepletely. I ended up re-installing.

Hey u and I have almost the same story...I too learned by doing and having disasters happening every few months. Now I'm pretty good at troubleshooting and stuff. I can fix almost any windows problem and what I don't know I simply ask someone who knows more than I. Baptism by fire is the best way to go,sometimes...

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
im still waiting for a virus that deletes/alters all your drivers.
or one that sets a BIOS password, but that'll never happen.
or one that actually physically damages hardware in some way...

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
Back before I learned how to write rootkits, my friend and I had "virus wars" with each other...
I wrote one that was designed to embed itself in any and all running programs that it could acquire a new thread context in, and then communicate with itself (to keep it going) while cancelling any and all Windows shutdowns (minus, of course, a cold boot or reset) and disabling access to regedit and the command line. Task Manager could still run, but it didn't matter... Not only were there two copies of the virus engine running at once, if either one of them got terminated, the other would start a new one and take over for the old one. If somehow BOTH engines were terminated, one of the hijacked programs currently running would simply restart them.
Little did I know that I coded a key part wrong...
One of the rules we had in this little war was to create countermeasures to our own code in order for a quick and speedy recovery. I did this before I even wrote the original virus code. However, what I didn't realize at the time was that I used the wrong registry setting... and disallowed access to EVERY program with the exception of explorer and the task manager. No notepad, no failsafe, no command line, no ANYTHING of use. I couldn't shut down the virus and I had lost all use of my computer.
So how did I solve it?
Luckily, I wrote the failsafe program "wrong" as well, so if I could figure out a way to get the failsafe program to run, everything would be fixed. So I renamed my failsafe program to taskman.exe, renamed taskman.exe to taskman.bak, copied the failsafe to the Windows folder, and pressed Ctrl+Shift+Esc. This is NOT an easy task to perform... because Windows notices if taskman.exe has been deleted, renamed, or changed, and it will automatically copy a valid version of taskman.exe to the Windows folder. So the trick was to be as quick as possible (before Windows noticed what was going on)
Definitely a day filled with headaches.

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
Making a monitor operate outside of its frequency limits could do damage and possibly even expose the user to elevated levels of x-rays (I doubt this would be much more harmful than normal), at least shorten its life. This is more likely to affect older and cheaper ones considering many not so cheap and old ones will just not display the picture and maybe display an error about the frequencies being out of range. I also read that constantly operating a monitor at its maximum frequency limits will almost surely shorten its life due to stress but in this case you could guarantee the proper picture is displayed. I suppose one could use the VBE 3.0 and VBE/DDC specs learn how to control the refresh rate in a more reliable fashion than anything else I can think of.

Re: Worst virus/destructive/spyware program experience ever
Never got a virus or anything.
But I did get infected by spyware twice.
One time I caught CoolWebSearch, but CWShredder got rid of that.
And one time I installed some program that had nCase in it (didn't read the license agreement), but I just uninstalled it.

Hell yeah, Webrebates is a bitch. If you look under processes there is webrebates0.exe and webrebates1.exe... if you end one of them the other one pops right back up.
thanks for the link MR END...
