| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: PayPhones
I believe cuttong open the shielding for the wires behind the phone, then cutting the yellow wire, will stop the coin return. Then come back later and reconnect the yellow wire for cash.
Haven't tried it myself though.

um... these guys picked up the phone and played a recording of money going into a phone(the sound it makes when you put your coins in) and then the phone had a dial tone and they made their call. or another one if you tap the reciver(the buttom thing that disconnects you) alot like 4 or 5 times you get connected to the operator.

Re: PayPhones
You can access the service menu on those new ss7-capable payphones (like the millenium phones) to do a lot of fun stuff with like make free calls, and other nice options. The passwords for these are between 5-7 digits long, depending on the make. The passwords to access these menus are usually typically easy-to-guess defaults like 12345, 13133, etc. etc.

Re: PayPhones
The bluebox is dead, and the redbox is getting there. If you live in the States, the only way to redbox a payphone nowadays is to dial out to 411, and push the tones in through there, and even then it only works for local calls. Though other parts of the world are still prone to redboxing, though that depends on the telco in the area.
(note: Don't rely on most of the tutorials on this site. Most of the information on phreaking on totse is very outdated, some probably even older than you.)

And how exactly would you get into this menu?

Re: PayPhones
Well to answer your question, those series of numbers are how you access the service menu. The password for these service menus I forgot to mention is usually a combination of "menu" as well as either # or *. For example, 52*57, #5257, 5*2*5*7, etc. There is a lot you can do if you access this menu, so if you can find a payphone like I described above in your area, I definately suggest giving this a try...

Re: PayPhones
inside the mouth peice there is a little component that makes it so you can't dial long distance calls. Cut the wires and you have long distance with no extra charge.

Uh, "a component that makes it so you can't dial long distance calls"? There is no such thing. The service provider itself prevents such calls from being placed on a subscribed payphone. So whoever you heard this from was just pulling your leg...

Yeah, you could, but that would take all the fun out of it. Plus, most operators won't fall for that crap.

That's what I used to do. Though now in England the operator makes a "request" for a an account containing the said amount of credit.
Then they take ages to send you a few numbers to get at it.
It's not really worth the wait, or speaking to a human..,

Wrong. To get to the menu dial 2727378 while the phone is hung up. Easy, but noone has found any uses. Some people say you can change the contrast etc... with a certain range of codes but I didn't notice any difference. There was another service code that doesnt work anymore that used to let you do a bit more. Really it's pretty useless so far, unless someone has found some working codes.
Read this article its a bit old but has stuff about the codes etc.. http://www.hackcanada.com/canadian/payphones/nortel_millennium.txt
