| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

While some of you oldbies (the commodore 64\amiga era guys, in your 30s+) probably know, you can use a telnet client as a mediocre IRC client.
This is useful if you want to learn the IRC RFC (to write your own little IRC client of love) or want to follow the barebones hacker tradition of using the measly tools given to you, actually, you might be able to proxy if you could shell in and use a telnet client as IRC client (bounce connection). Interesting stuff.

I got nowhere to host, so...feel free to download it and insert the link in this post. (from your hosted space)
Expect a tutorial soon. Sometimes the commands don't work because people disconnect\talk\join while your typing and it skews what you're typing up. I've only tried windows telnet, if I use another client like PuTTy it may not do this or maybe if I switch the shell type\text type of the dos window. More to come.
resources I used to help me achieve what I did: RFC 1459 (IRC)

Quick tutorial on how to get ident\registured for connect
----------------------------
Once the server has sent all the data (usually ending in ***No SOCKS server found)
type:
nick <nick>
after that
user <user id> <ip> <hostname> : <real name>
IP and hostname fields can usually be filled with gibberish, as the ident server has resovled your ip and hostname, so put Z in each field. User id is similar to the user id field in mIRC. This is the thing that will come infront of your hostmask.
i.e:
guest@cloaked.hostmask.net
will show up on a whois
after this, you should get the server's MOTD. Good.
----------
Commands:
join <channel> <key>
PRIVMSG <#chan\nick> : <text to send>
nick <nick to change to>
&c
I haven't experimented with setting modes, &c. I'm trying to figure out how to do action, it appears to be a special ascii character in a PRIVMSG.
