i subscribed to direcway. it's great at first, until other people are on. it's pretty cool at 4 in the morn when speeds reach 2.4 mbs, but i'm usually about to pass out. during peak hours i am seeing speeds drop to 41 kbs which is bullshit, i can do that on dial up. FUCK DIRECWAY

actually, then can go up to 10mb with a 1mb connection, all with a bit of tweakery of course, that normally gets you kicked off of your ISP .

yeah, i'm not sure how to do it, but i've seen tutorials on some IRC servers, and some people who my dad knows do it, but if you crank it up to like 10mb your ISP realises pretty soon and bans you for life, the best thing to do is just take it up to like 2 or 3 MB for a short while, like when your downloading something big, then turn it back down.

Wait a minute. A couple of questions: are you talking about download speeds?
Where approximately do you live and what is the attitude of the satellite? (degrees off horizon and direction) (approximately?) I would like to know that.
It might not be right for you but I think it is really something to look into :-) Main reason is that someone in a very remote area where there is no power grid for example may be able to recieve satellite DSL and even move around from different locations up in the mountains.
This could have some extraordinary advantages for some people.
I would like to learn more about it.
:-)

I then thought of the stationary receiver and being able to transmit and receive to and from that stationary receiver from other locations (mobile).
I hope bangbangbooty from the radio forum has some commentary on this. I saw that he posted once on satellite DSL but I never could find the post.

Re: Avoid satellite internet
the other problem with satellite internet is that you can't work off a wireless hub. maybe someone will solve that problem. You've got a receive and transmit on rg-6 connected to your computer through usb, but it needs a direct connection.

Re: Avoid satellite internet
You think you've got it bad? On a good day I get 40 kb/s. Plus if I use the good day for more than 2 hours they cut off my connection for the rest of the day and slow me down to 5 kb/s for the rest of the week. Then if you complain they point out the Fair Access Restriction Policy. This pretty much say's if you use more than more than your percentage of the satelite's bandwidth(this is on average about 20 k) they are going to shut you down. This wouldn't be a problem if they didn't try to hide their substandard service by giving you 1 hour blasts of 56k connections at best and then bitch at you if you use it.
Directway's service sucks ass. Don't even look at it if you have other options.

Re: Avoid satellite internet
Most satellite systems use a dialup modem for upload traffic and the satellite signal for download traffic. Some providers might decide to use some other WAN technology for upload but I doubt any alternative is widespread for cost and practicality reasons.
Two-way satellite internet connections are considerably more expensive than a One-way satellite connection.

you were right. i just did several downloads and then it fucked up on me. i unplugged and all that shit and tried a hard reboot, but they have me stuck a 8 kb/s. what is the use of this shit if they don't let you use it.
i'm looking for my agreement right now. at least on dial-up i kept 49 kb/s.
fuck me, i'm stuck w/ my equipment lease

Re: Avoid satellite internet
The problem with gigabit ethernet connections is that they are ahead of their time. All the other machines you're going through aren't going to support those speeds, hence the bottleneck.

Re: Avoid satellite internet
did anyone say this already? well yes you can 'uncap' your dsl connection. usually your modem will connect to your ISP using a protocol called 'tftp' tftp is for trivial File Transfer Protocol, you need no login nor password to connect to tftp servers. if you find out what their tftp server is you can find, actuallyi dont know the specifics but basically there is a file which says who gets what. if you can find that and edit it, you can 'crank up' the speed of your internet connection. my advice, DONT DO IT. your isp will notice right away. especially if they are a small company. i nmap scanned my dsl isp just the other day because i was bored, and they guy CALLED my house. hes actually pretty cool and the tech support is great, but he was mad about the port scanning. itsn ot illegal, but its his hardware that i am using and they provide great service so i will refrain from scanning them ever again.

Just get a Linksys Wireless bridge, oh wait, I just found the word USB in your post. Ok then there's this software that'll work in Linux with 3 or 4 network cards and turn it into a router. You can put firewalls and stuff into it and I think you can get a program that'll work with your USB connection on Linux. I can't be bothered to search around for it now but I think that'll work.
