Check Ink Removal
Does anybody know the exact composistion of the ink removal of checks?
If you don't know what I mean, here's the explanation:
I saw on an ABC 20/20 special report on check fraud. People's mail were stolen before the mailman comes and checks that were found were "recycled" through this formulation of liquids which removed the ink from pens and left the ink from original checks. I want to find out what the formula is in order that if I ever find a check I can manuever this devious procedure.

Re: Check Ink Removal
That is called check washing, It is Illegal, but anyway. People use Acetone or other ink removal products and dip the check in the solution. You can't use a greasy or waxy type remover, It will stain. But beware there are extreme penalties for it and most checks are chemical resistant and will turn a different color or fade if exposed to certain chemicals.

Re: Check Ink Removal
I've heard of this. People break into the mailbox, or use a small child with long skinny arms to reach in a nab a bill payment. They use some type of solvent to wash away all the ink(maybe nailpolish remover, but i've heard its actualy some type household cleaning product) except for the signature and pay their own bills.
However, Jolly is right. Everyone knows about this and banks are probably already taking steps to prevent this.I can see if you just want to piss someone off by stealing their mail so that they get their cable turned off, but I'm betting the check can be tracked if you try to re-use, so I don't advise it.

Re: Check Ink Removal
Most use ACETONE. However, I do not condone any illegal activities and would like to state that check washing is a dangerous and illegal activity.
