Avoiding cops
I am going to be buying a radar detector soon so I can speed yay..what kind should I look for, what are some features I need, how often do cops actually have their radar on, how much do you get caught if you use the radar detector...any information like this. I tend to speed pretty heavily, I just worry about the cops who don't have their radar on until they see you. Any methods for detecting that too? I live in new york (not the city) if that helps at all.

Re: Avoiding cops
hmm, what I've heard is that a lot of the radar detectors can't detect the very short bursts used by the newer police radar/laser systems. Similarly, they use the technique you descibed, firing only at cars they suspect to be speeding, and for a short time, not just firing stray radar waves all along the roadway. also, does anyone know if these systems are illegal in any way? or maybe just in some areas?
All in all, the price is high for a system which I wouldn't place a lot of trust in.
Best thing to do is to speed with a pack of cars, cops can't easily turn out and pull you over, its harder to clock individual cars(you may be able to fight it in court, too), and you're less likely to be singled out. Try not to be the last one in the pack or speed on a road without other cars around you, this is when you get caught, every time.
Additionally, look in the distance for cars slamming on their brakes for no apparent reason. This has worked for me many times. People almost always react this way to cops they see along the road, radar out or not.
Just play it smart and you'll be fine, I speed all the time, like everyone or usually more. (crossing fingers) No tickets yet.

Re: Avoiding cops
I have a Vector something or other. It's pretty loud and obnoxious but it notified me of 10 or so speed traps on the way to the Street Rod Nationals. One could come in handy.

Re: Avoiding cops
dude get a police scanner. they give false speeds, so if ur going like 70mph on the freeway, it'll say u be going like 60. my dad has one, and he never gets caught speeding.
dont get the police SCRAMBLERS, they can scramble messages like "fuck you" instead of ur speed. those are illegal

Re: Avoiding cops
I got one, it's worked so far, it goes off when I am near the mall and stuff, and yes it detects the newer Pulse system where they fire short bursts. It's worked so far, It found out a cop today that was hiding. I like it a lot.

Re: Avoiding cops
Best two radar detectors are Valentine One and Passport 8500, but they are expensive. On the other hand, they work really good. But you still have to watch your mirrors...
