I heard that you can rip the strip out of a $5 bill or higher and put it on a $1 and a change machine will count it as whatever the strip is. I've managed to expose the strip, but how do you rip it out?

I dont think this method works, and is likely a work of fiction of books such as the Anarchist Cookbook.

Most modern bill changer machines work on the principle of magnetic inks. The ink used in todays bills are magnetic, and they form a specific pattern - whatever is printed on the money. The machine instead of using an electric eye like a normal scanner uses an magnetic reader to read for the image.

Now the strips are used as an extra security feature. Some machines check for these, some does not. They are however, not the way a machine determines the bills worth, and therefore, your idea will not work.

You mean to say that you will destroy a 5$ bill to put the strip into a 1$ bill and use it as if you are using the 5$ bill anyway?
