grocery stores and booze
I know several people that do this: Walk in, grab two bottles of rum and simply walk out. They only seem to get caught when they keep stealing from them over and over again.
I'm thinking about doing it today, should I?

I don't see what's so special about this. It's just a specific application of the ol' grab 'n' run...

Pur!
First off, its sounds like a grab and walk to me.
Secondly, we need to know the situation, did he actually see them do this or did they tell him they did. Once I know this, then I can give further help.

Re: grocery stores and booze
its funny because i have seen the later parts of these grab some booze and walk away. once they hit the sidewalk there is normmal some manager yelling stop stop, so they run or dive into some friends car. its pretty funny to see. if you are looking to steal booze just steal beer from AM/PM they wont chase you. and they for sure will not have a security guard...also watch out for upstanding citizens that might try and take you down
my friend was in jail for a few weeks for doing beer runs.

Re: grocery stores and booze
I work at a grocery store, and according to our rules, if even one bottle in a sixpack breaks, we gotta put the whole pack in the damaged area so we can get credit for it when they do inventory. As a result, we have PILES AND PILES of beer and chick malts just sitting out in the open in our store's back room.
If it's one of those 24-hour deals, go in late and just walk into the back room. Look around a little and you'll easily stumble on the damaged area, or as we call it, the Treasure Trove of Drunkenness. Just stuff a ton of beer bottles in your backpack and book it. You might also want to check behind the store before you go in - if there's a back door, you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

Re: grocery stores and booze
Me and a few friends of mine do this all the time. In particular, we target the barcardi 151's. Those sell for almost 10 over the retail price around local schools.
Anyway, the entire operation goes something like this. One person walks in, gets a drink, places it in his pocket, and walk out. He cares not about sensors, about who sees him, and nothing. He simply does this calmly and quickly, however not panicking.
This usually works for about 2 bottles. NO MORE. Usually, even if someone notices they will not say anything. If an employee notices, he might shout at you but simply walk away. At most chain stores(not family owned liquer stores) they will NOT give chase.

Re: grocery stores and booze
This is how it all went down... I went in there around 2:30 or so and grabed a huge bottle of rum. Imediately, all the stores employees wanted to help me. One even went outside and got my friends liscence plate number. I decided they had already caught me before I even stole it. So, I put it back and walked away.
My friends hypothesis was that If you go in there durring the winter when everyone is in school and you act very friendly, then you should be able to pull it off easily.
I usualy don't steal but I don't have many other methods of getting alcohal. )=

That's a good thought. Of course, you'd have to look 21, at least from the back, so you'd want to do this with someone who has some height to him.

Re: grocery stores and booze
I had the idea the other day of just using self check out for buying alcohol under age. One employee is watching a bunch of them at once, and usually talking to someone or not paying much attention. Either take your chances on them being to busy or apathetic, or set up a diversion with a friend, I think this would work, unless they won't let alcohol be sold by this machine.

Re: grocery stores and booze
I think if you use one of those self checkout machines for alcohol, it would ring or light up or do something similar. Although I am not sure of this, I would imagine it is designed to do so in order to alert an employee for checking your ID. I would give it a try however and if he asks, say you forgot and calmly walk away.

Re: grocery stores and booze
A Bar code scam, as mentioned here (http://www.undesirable.info/viewtopic.php?t=10) would be a good idea in the case that a U-Scan is available. If one were to do this activity, they would need to bring in the cheaper barcode with a piece of tape already on the coded side to simply stick on the alcaholic item. This would allow you to get in and out quicker than if one was to search for a cheaper priced sticker type barcode.

we used to do this all the time for hard lemonade and vodka at kroger
would walk down the aisle... slide a bottle up my coat sleeve or in my jnco pockets then pull my trenchcoat around it... STAND IN LINE and buy like a pack of gum and an enquirer and leave... heh...

U-scan's require authorization for tobacco and alcohol... which means the employee has to check your id and go back to their kiosk and approve it... I know... I worked them for 6 months... heh...

Re: grocery stores and booze
I forgot to add that U-Scans have very sensitive scales in them to tell the identify weight with bar code. If one were to barcode for an alcaholic beverage, one would need to know the exact eight of both items and make sure they are as close to equal as possible.

Re: grocery stores and booze
if your willing to grab a bottle of beer from a store and run, then why not take a chance at garage shopping. at like 3 in the morning go into open garages and just take the booze you find. and if you cant find an opened garage door, try breaking in the side door (most garages have them). your still less likely to get caught with those ideas than with grabbin and runnin.
