People that hurt animals suck, and among other things they usually move on to hurting people, and generally being real assholes. So let it go, its bad karma anyway. You'll probably get sick by it scratching you or get mauled by a bear when you're walking in the woods. Suprisingly enough, people usually get whats coming to them.

They are marsupials related to the Kangaroo and Koala and they have been in the Americas for 70 million years or so. They were around when the Dinosaurs roamed.

They make very good pets, they are very adorable when they are young and can become quite a friendly house pet.

They don't bite hard, if they do bite, which is rare. They hiss like a cat and open their mouths to try to intimidate a predator but they are very timid and would prefer to play dead than fight.

I helped rescue 3 baby ones last year for a librarian and she kept them for pets and then gave them to someone who had kids and they kept them until they got bigger and then released them. I kept one of them for a few days, they are very cute and remarkable animals. You can find a number of sites on the web about Opossums and how to take care of them as pets- photos too.

A couple of Opossums even have their own websites.

If your detainee is an adult, it might not become domesticated so easily as a young one. They need to feel safe and have a place to hide- If you are nice they will learn not to be afraid of you.

I would suggest that you keep it for a little while if you would like to keep it as a pet and learn about it, but then release it into a good place where it can survive well out in the wild, early enough so it can become situated before winter.

Presidents Bengamin Harrison and Herbert Hoover had Opossums as pets, I think while in the White House.

I have seen lots of good opossum sites on the web and there are very very many so I couldn't find the ones I liked the best- which are sites of people who have them as pets, but here are a few common sites
