Default Read before posting in Bad Ideas

Before you make a post on Bad Ideas it is essential that you read and comply with the following advice.

1. Search before you post.

Search the main TOTSE archives here:

http://www.totse.com/en/search/index.html

Search the TOTSE forums here:

http://www.totse.com/bin/bbs/search.cgi?action=intro

Search the web here: www.google.com (http://www.google.com) or here: www.alltheweb.com (http://www.alltheweb.com)

There are two main reasons for conducting a search: 1) Seedng if the topic was already discussed to avoid posting information that has already been shared, or if it is new information on a topic, posting it in an older pertinent thread to avoid multiple threads on the same topic. 2) If you are asking a question, you will likely find the results faster if you take a few minutes to do the search yourself, versus waiting for someone else to see your post and maybe do the same search for you.

2. Post in the appropriate forum.

Before posting, ask yourself: does this thread belong in Bad Ideas, or would it be better suited in another forum?

*If your post is about building explosives, pyrotechnics, or generally 'how to blow shit up' it belongs Backyard Ballistics ( http://www.totse.com/bin/bbs/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Backyard+Ballistics&number=19&DaysPrune=45&LastLogin )

*If your post is about weapons or how to fight, it belongs in Weapons & Combat ( http://www.totse.com/bin/bbs/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Weapons+and+Combat&number=29&DaysPrune=45&LastLogin )

*If your post is about what you might call 'hacking' (although that is most likely erroneous in the first place), your post belongs in Technophiliacs & Technophiles ( http://www.totse.com/bin/bbs/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Technophiliacs+|AMP|+Technophiles&number=11&DaysPrune=45&LastLogin )

*If your post is about expressing anger at a particular person/group of persons/thing it belongs in Bitch & Moan ( http://www.totse.com/bin/bbs/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Bitch+and+Moan&number=30&DaysPrune=45&LastLogin )

*And so forth...

3. Constructive criticism only.

If you don't have any constructive comments/compliments to make, resist the urge to flame or post derogatory comments. If you find flaws in the ideas presented by the poster, point them out in a respective way, and suggest alternative solutions.

4. Stay on topic.

If the original post is about some topic A do not shift the discussion to some unrelated topic B. However, if the topics are related you may of course discuss them in the same thread. For example, if the original post is about shoplifting do not ask things like 'where are you from?' On the other hand, if the post is about breaking and entering, a reply about overcoming attack dogs is acceptable.

5. No personal information/messages

Do not post things like phone numbers, fax numbers, private addresses, etc.

Do not make posts directed to specific members, unless the topic/question is of interest to the membership of the forum. For example, an acceptable question would be, "...could you please explain so and so in greater detail from the article you submitted to TOTSE." An unacceptable question would be, "Hey ... can you email me?"

6. Make coherent posts (use a spellchecker/dictionary)

Before posting, spell check the message that you have typed by pasting it into a word processor program such as MS Word. If you are unsure about what certain words mean, check www.dictionary.com. (http://www.dictionary.com.) Posting coherent messages that everyone can understand saves everyone a lot of time of having to ask you to rewrite the post.

An addition to #6.....

Don't use 'kewl' typing. Use proper words. This goes for any message you post on totse [hell, all of this does really]. Its just stupid, and makes reading a post annoying. Also members tend to have little respect for those who type like they fell straight out of an AOL commercial.

And example being:

i need 2 kno how i can pick lox so if u kno how 2 tell me cuz i hav been tryin 2 find out how 4 a long time and if u dont hav ne thing 2 say that answers my q dont even post cuz i dont want 2 hav my post filled with gay ppl sayin all kinds of gay crap and shit so how do i pick lox?

Obviously thats not the best fake message, but I type like a human being, and its hard to replicate stupidity; you need to possess it. But you get the idea. Also notice the lack of grammar. This seems to be abundant lately, and is worse then any typing errors or 'kewl' typing as it really makes the message hard to understand. So at the least folks, use commas and periods!

Yes, lack of grammar makes me want to hit my computer screen with a pick-axe.

Unfortunately, the version of UBB the TOTSE forums use doesn't support stickies

I should add, don't come here and expect us to do all the work for you. Like he said ,use the archives, use the internet. We are here for you after you've done your work.

This site is big enough that there is probably a post or an article for most questions you might have. The forum is here if you have trouble finding the information, or if you want to discuss information or get opinions.

I seem to remember a while back the owner(s) of totse were looking for a new UBB system. Were there ever any updates about this? Anyway, good thread. Perhaps we should bump this every few hours .

*Bump*

The issue of getting new forum software is still being discussed here: http://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum1/HTML/000027.html

No decision has been made yet.

Actually, that belongs in Network Security and Hacking .

And, yeah...there are a lot of mods that shouldn't be mods, and a lot of non-mods that should be mods. I just wish more of the mods fell into the non-|337 group.

I was pretty close to making this. This post will be very helpful.

dDIzzIEe should be a moderator if:

TX297 never comes back from his vacation that he said he would be back from around the first week of August.

Ironz quits doing his job, which he hasn't, and the boards get out of control.

If there are too many terrible posts in Bad Ideas. At one time there were a lot of completely unrelated and just stupid threads. TX297 complained about the problem and became moderator to help Ironz in moving and deleting threads.

In any of those situations, I would nominate dDIzzIEe.

A bump is when you post a message that contain no useful content other than moving the current thread up to the top. Such as this one. BUMP.
