This question is right up my alley. Codiene and other opiates work by bonding to the opioid receptors. These receptors normally are utilized by the body to uptake endogenous morphine and other endorphins. Codiene is an opiate agonist. This means that when codiene, which is converted into morphine by the liver, bonds with the opioid receptors, it mimics an endorphin, and blocks pain synapses from being sent up and down the spinal cord. Opiates are CNS(central nervous system) depressants. For more indepth information, try doing a search on google.
