That's pretty interesting. I've seen most of those fish whilst diving. Have you got an url for the article?

Re: ummmm anyone ever heard of.....Hallucinogenic fish?
I have heard of a fish in the North atlantic near Iceland and Greenland that makes on trip from holding it or touching it. I would imagine it's some type of tryptamine, as those are the most commonly occuring natural psychadelic, especially of that caliber. I read a trip report and the experience sounded like a slow-motion DMT trip. The reporter said it peaked for about an hour and came on fast.
All I wanna know is where to take my rod and tackle :P

I'd like to know that myself, I love fishing, living in Norway and all.
Living in Norway also makes me pretty close to the north atlantic

I didn't think tryptamines could be absorbed transdermally. We'll see i guess.

Re: ummmm anyone ever heard of.....Hallucinogenic fish?
If you think about it those fish have a pretty good natural defense system, a shark who eats one of them sure wont do it again(unless he likes tripping)
If the fish are small enough to breed in captivity, however, we'd all see a new hallucinogenic hitting the streets soon. If anyone has a really big saltwater aquarium, try to get some live specimens for breeding.

Ive seen most of those fish while diving too. Sergeant majors make good sushi, but I am unsure that they really have any halucigenic qualities.

Grouper, Bluefish, Sergeant Majors and Goatfish are so common, I can't believe more people don't breed them for the purpose of getting high. There must be a catch.

quote:i used to eat grouper and mullet all the time when i was in florida. i never tripped. quote:: : I heard on the radio last night about a trend with some students at some university (What a unique way to set up a 'strange new drug' story in the media) were swalowing live tropical fish of some variety, and the fish would release a drug when in the stomach that was a hallucinogen. Anyone heard about this? More info?Thusly, a cooked fish won't make you trip... i guess.
i'd like to know if anyone finds out anything...

...Especially in quantities large enough to experience effects...
About the whole cooking thing... that probably does destroy any possible "active ingredients" in these fish. Heat IS notorious for breaking down certain drugs, as I'm sure you all know. *winky wink*

Re: ummmm anyone ever heard of.....Hallucinogenic fish?
I believe what you are describing is ciguatera toxicity. This is a toxin found in reef fish that eat certain dinoflaguates(algae). The smaller reef fish are then consumed by larger fish such as grouper, amberjack, barracuda, and red snapper. Over time, the toxin accumulates in the flesh of the fish in much the same way as mercury does.
Ciguatera toxicity however is not known to normally cause hallucinations. it noramlly affects the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and neurological systems of the body. The mortality rate is typicaly around .1%, but can sometimes rise to 20%. Death normally occurs through cardiovascular depression, respiratory paralysis, or hypovolemic shock.

You were the only person to 'catch' on to that one.
I can't remember where I read this, but stings from certain jellyfish, once neutralised, can produce hallucinations in some people. I'd rather not find out though, the idea of someone urinating on me is less than pleasant.
