All right this is the thread where I will answer any and all of your Salvia Divinorum questions. I have noticed a lot of Salvia questions lately and thought I would write a general FAQ for it. If you have any new questions not covered below, feel free to ask, it would be good if this became the official Salvia thread.

<LI>What is it?

Salvia Divinorum is a plant grown in Mexico and South America. It is popular on the drug scene for its varying halucigenic effects. It is not a marijuana replacement , it is not anything like any drugs you have tried before. Salvia has been used for years as a religious aid to natives of Mexico and South America. It is a very spiritual plant not to be taken lightly. It can also be great fun.

Salvia is legal in all countries and states except Australia and Israel.

<LI>Where can I get it?

There are many ways to get it, online and off. Online it is available from many vendors, I shall list a few here; www.IamShaman.com (http://www.IamShaman.com) is the place I buy mine. They have decent prices and great customer service. They also accept money orders and checks sent by mail. www.ShamanShop.net (http://www.ShamanShop.net) is another good place. Their prices are not as good as IAS but the quality is unsurpassed in my experience. www.BouncingBearBotanicals.com (http://www.BouncingBearBotanicals.com) is popular, although I have never ordered from them myself. Their prices are on par with IamShaman. www.Ebay.com (http://www.Ebay.com) has Salvia available from many users, but caution is advised, there are many scams on eBay.

Offline, you can go to many head shops to find it. For the uninformed, a head shop is another name for a smoke shop, but you already knew that.

<LI>Can I grow it?

Salvia almost never produces seeds (really, never), anyone claiming to have Salvia Divinorum seeds should be suspect. I have never seen Salvia Divinorum seeds available from any reputable sellers. That being said, it is quite easy to grow if you live in a warm climate. Many nurseries can special order it from greenhouses for you, so check a local nursery first. www.IamShaman.com (http://www.IamShaman.com) and www.BouncingBearBotanicals.com (http://www.BouncingBearBotanicals.com) both sell live Salvia Divinorum plants, but it is advisable to shell out the cash for next day express shipping.

Salvia loves warm temperatures and lots of humidity. Water your plants every two to three days. If you live in a cooler climate, place your potted Salvia plant into a clear plastic bag. Insert a few wooden dowels into the bag to keep the plastic off the leaves. Pour about a cup of water into the bottom of bag and use a wire twist tie to seal the top. Open the bag and replenish the water once a week.

You can harvest from your plant as soon as it is growing healthily. Never pick all of the leaves, take 2/3 at most never more. Always pick leaves from the top down, and cut the stem off where you stopped picking leaves. Place a dab of Elmer’s glue on the stem where you cut it. Doing this will yield a bushy plant over time instead of a tall skinny one that could break in a good wind.

<LI>What does it do?

Salvia is a powerful halucigen it can completely remove all of reality and replace it with something else. Open eye visuals are common, auditory hallucinations also take place on occasion. At lower doses Salvia is a euphoric; it produces a deep contentment similar to early stages of drunkenness, warm and fuzzy It is best to consume in a quiet room with soft lights and soft music.

At levels where it replace reality with Salvia space you will probably feel an unknown entity or entities telling you what to do. Fear not, this entity is Lady Salvia, the spirit of the drug, the lesser entities are called smelves, they serve her. You may actually see the smelves, mine are like small blue elves with wings, but a visual sighting of Lady Salvia is very rare if you do see her, count yourself extremely lucky.

<LI>How much should I take?

There is no one answer for this, some people seem to be immune to Salvias effects, I have smoked with some people who needed so much to catch a buzz it would have perma-fried me. On average two hits of a 10X extract is usually more than sufficient.

<LI>How should I take it?

Ah, the question of the ages. Some people swear you need a bong, myself, I just use a regular glass pipe. A bong is nice because it cools off the smoke, and the smoke is less harsh. Pipes have the advantage that the distance from bowl to lungs is much shorter and therefore more effective than a bong, if you don’t mind the smoke. Whether you decide to use a pipe or bong, one thing is sure, A TORCH LIGHTER IS A MUST Salvia works at a much higher temperature than most other drugs.

<LI>What about extracts?

In my humble opinion extracts are the best way to go, because some people are seemingly immune to the effect of salvia, extracts provide more power in a smaller package. Extracts are also good because you are smoking less material. Salvia extracts are most commonly sold in two strengths, 5X and 10X. These are, obviously, five times and ten times stronger than raw leaves, respectively.

<LI>I am trying it for the first time, what do you recommend?

I recommend that for a first time you get a trip sitter, someone who you are comfortable with. If at any time during your trip you become freaked out, they are there to talk you through it. Trust me a sitter is mandatory.

That being said, load some 10X extract into a pipe and take a big hit, hold it in as long as possible. Once you exhale, immediately take one more. So 2 hits of 10X. Once you stop screaming “OH My God, what did I just do!?!?” you’ll start to experience the trip, and find out why its so popular. Yes, you should take 2 hits of 10X, it gives you a good reference point for all future experiments.

I have done it before, had very minor effects, such as hearing things and seeing tracers.

Only was standerd tho, next time I will go 10x.

10x is my favorite, a jet lighter and 20 second holds feel gret and produce great effects. regular leaves tage ALOT more to get anything out of it.

^That is true, but a regular butane flame is only barely hot enough. I say to use a torch lighter because unless you hold the flame on the salvia it rarely works 100%.

IT SOUNDS SO PERFECT, I have a great urge to do it now, thanks for a great post and the what not about it.

salvia isnt that great it is a unique and extreme experience but i would much rather have weed and salvia smells like shit the smell of my pipe after i smoke it makes me wanna puke and i get the best results with a regular pipe and a bic lighter.

I've got some salvia, but it isn't the extracted kind, do you have any tips on how I should smoke it and how much? I've never gotten to escape reality, like so many others have.

Load up your pipe/bong with leaves, take a big hit, hold for twenty seconds before release. Repeat as necessary. Regular salvia leaf costs so little that there isn't much need to be stingy with it.

The first time I ever smoked salvia the room got bathed in a warm yellow light, and I could hear a person call my name.

my smelves are neon colors... but they move so fast you can't actually see them, you just see the tracers they leave behind.

It would not be hot enough. You need a torch lighter and a pipe/bong

if you are using crispy dry leaves then you dont need torch to get fucked up

and dangerous,the same thing happens to me when i smoke leaves i cant seem to break through and im chain loading my pipe and have tryed both types of lighters and butane worked just as good as a torch lighter,i get that drunken dizziness feeling(trust me its not fun at all) and want to puke.

5 bowls with a torch of dry leaves didnt break me through

Cam, I only see them if I am really hitting it hard (3+ of 10X) or I pass out and have drug induced dreams. I like drug induced dreams, the halucinations are so much more vivid. If I do see them conciously they are really more like blue fuzzy midgets but really blurred.

Hey CrazyAmish... I'm a little perplexed that you can actually take 4 hits of 10x. One hit of 10x for 20 seconds will definately make me break-through and lose consciousness. I can't smoke a bong very well when I'm unconscious

But then.. I do add pure salvinorin to my 10x for a little EXTRA kick. I also always add a little green-bud to the 10x and use a small green-bud base in the bong. Even if you don't add salvinorin to your salvia, I highly reccomend adding pot to the extract. It absolutely, undeniably potentiates the salvia and kicks the trip in high gear in just one hit. Adding an ice cube into the water in the bong is the finishing touch that sautee's my brain and activates the USS Enterprise's warp speed drive straight to purple planet Cookooland in the Gonzo Nebula constellation.

How much does Non-regulated salvia vary in strength?

Smoke it...surprisingly.

You can also make a quid with regular leaves, I forget what the amount is, but you chew it and hold it in your mouth for a half hour without spitting or swallowing the juice. After the times up spit out the leaves.

Quids work best with between 20-30 leaves. Effects begin within 15 min. Although I find the mint flavor resfreshing, this brings a brand new definition to the word bitter.

Oh, and Rogue Genious; non standardized extracts vary a bit either way, depending on the batch. A standard 10X has 12.5mg of Salivornin A per gram, a non-standardized extract can have anywhere between 8mg and 16mg so your dosing isnt always the same. If buying a gram of 10X in both standard and non-standard from the same company, either one could be better depending on many factors such as quality of initial leaf and care in extraction.

When you do a quid, brush your teeth, gums your cheek and under the tongue (all around). This clears away old tissue and allows better absorption into the bloodstream. And rinse with an alcohol mouthwash (this irritates the lining of the mouth which also helps. I've never done the quid method, I have yet to break through smoking it yet. Just telling you people what I've learned on the net.

-Well let me correct you here. First off, standardized 10x generally has 22mg of salvinorin not 12.5mgs. (2mg/gram regular leaf x 10 grams plus 2mg in the base leaf is used for equivelency) So, 20mgs of pure salvinorin is added to a gram of regular leaf making it actually 11x but called 10x out of measurement practicality.

Standardized extract is the best way to go not just because you know how much salvinorin is in it per gram.....but because the salvinorin is also dispersed evenly over the leaf material in the gram. (salvinorin is added to it and not reduced from it)

In non-standardized extract the salvinorin tends to conglobulate into 'pockets' leaving some leaf material with little or no salvinorin in it. You could get a gram with very little salvinorin in it since companies make huge batches at a time. Therefore, non-standardized grams can vary greatly in potency. On top of that, just within the gram the salvinorin may be so uneven that 5 hits yeilds nothing while the next sends you to outerspace. Potency of initial leaf and extraction skill are also a big factor here whereas not so in the Standarized- the Standarized is an exact science.

Stick with standardized 10x if buying online or from a headshop. It will be stronger than non-standardized and also contains less tar and wax (which is the reason the salvinorin isn't released until high temps). Plus it's better for the lungs.

If you get really good Standardized 10x you CAN even use a vaporizer.

this got me thinking. if you burned a salvia joint, where would the savinornium(sp?) go? Would it stay in the ash, or burn off. Or a little of both.

If it stayed in the ash, wouldn't that ash have a high salvinornium concentration with most tars and carcinogens burned away. Or would it vaporize even though the temp. is low.

I could see it doing a little of both, but i don't know.

That's an interesting question and the ash may well have a significant amount of salvinorin in it. My guess is that most of the salvinorin will be carried with the smoke but since it's a joint, most of that smoke goes into the air.

You have to remember that we are dealing with minisule amounts of salvinorin here spread out over a lot of material. 1mg of which is the same as a few grains of sand. You have to get that 1mg into your lungs in one hit to successfully break-through and even letting a little smoke get away significantly effects the results.

do you think you would have a better trip inside or outside? i have heard you get better trips outside on stuff like moarning glory.
