tripping out from staying up too long
well, after I heard that you would start to hallucinate if you stayed up for too long, me and one of my friends decided to give it a try on spring break. After about the fourth sleepless day is when we really started to trip. It was mostly a lot of small things like hearing noises and seeing things move, but then, oh baby...I went on a 3 hour mega-trip where I was lying on the floor of my friends shed chanting gibberish because I though I was taking part in an ancient ceremony to 'raise the spirit of the dragon'. I THINK it was on the 6th night that we decided to sleep, but before we did we smoked a bunch of weed and it was the most amazing high of my life.
Now, as fun as it was, I wouldn't recommend it because apparently that is extremely bad for both your physical health and especially your mental health. We didn't come off with too many after effects, my friend with almost none, but me, even though its been a while since spring break, i still trip out for no reason, even when i haven't smoked up in a week, and I also get extreme paranoia attacks. lol, oh well, it was fun.

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
You probarly have a mental illness.
A friend of mine collapsed at "the gathering 99" (www.gathering.org) after 5 days without sleep, he just woke up after manymany hours. No trip. Just extremely out of it, thats what happens. You are so tired its like walking through quicksand, but ok, you may want to call it a trip, because it is actually kinda fun.
I dont care.

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
well, we also were living off chocolate bars, caffeine pills and coffee...so maybe the caffeine helped a bit...
I actually did look into it after and apparently if you stayed up long enought to hallucinate, then you most likely did damage your brain...oh well...still got b honours last term can't be too fucked up.

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
This could be a valuable experience if anyone ever tries to brainwash you. One of the most common methods of breaking someone is to put them in a white room with bright fluorescent lights, dose their food with caffeine, and make loud noises at odd intervals. You will have an advantage because you now know more about your response to sleep deprivation. I have heard of meth jags lasting up to 2 weeks, but I figure thats bullshit. One of my dishwashers was a speedfreak and he declined so fast after his first paycheque that by 4 days he was so fucked up that he was talking to himself and swatting at imaginary birds, the next day he got lost for 4 hours delivering sandwiches to the car dealer across the street.

CulinaryOverlord --> nice to see someone else from the Fraser Valley.
I doubt they could've stayed up for two weeks, staying up a week is pretty close to death. I remember from psychology class that every 24 hours your awake, your immune system effeciency declines something like 30%, so after a week, you pretty much have no immune system.

my brother is big into meth and he usually goes 5 days but i will have to ask him whats the longest he's gone. Isn't meth horrible for your immune system anyway.

It is. For the average person, after roughly seven days without sleep there is such a buildup of toxic chemicals to reach life-threatening amounts .
Anybody telling you that they have been up for over 7 days is very likely full of shit.
And while it may be true that they [for the most part] [i]may have been generally 'up' for that long, they had to have short '30-second-eye-blinks or something like that.
They may not even know that they slept; I've been in conversation with someone who - mid sentance - nods off for half a minute, then will pick up the sentance right where they left it, almost without missing a beat too!
I've been known to do such things myself - back in the past when I was first learning my 'How Too's'; that is, while I was learning how to stay up for 4 to 5 days at a time - on a regular basis. And I do it without going into paranoid freakouts, not letting myself neglect to eat and drink fluids, and generally being better off.
.
I now only need to sleep between 1/2 and a few hours for every three to five days awake [with a big snooze of 10 to 15 hours about once a month]. These days I really [i]can't sleep more than that - and it's not just because of too much pain, though that plays a major role too.
But I pretty much have got rid of the odder aspects of being up that many hours: I no longer wake up from a 30+ sleep, see that it's 7:30, with grey /darkish skies, and spend the next several minutes trying to figure out if it's night or morning.
Nor do I worry when I catch movement out of the corner of my eye after the 4th day up .
That doesn't mean, either, that there's no fun left to me...**

Some people just aren't cut out for that type of thing and crumble easily.
Then there are those of us who are or can.
As I mentioned up above, I had to learn how; I regularly stay up for 3 to 5 days with a 10 to 20 hour period of sleep.
To keep the negative effects of doing this down to a mimimum, I make sure I keep a jug of fluids - mostly water - near by.
I also make sure to eat every day - monetary considerations willing ;-)].
The only part I haven't worked out all too well yet, is the actual going to sleep part; To be sure, I am certainly better at it than I was back in 94/'95. Back then it wasn't unusual at all for me to wake up from a nod-off to a view that - once I made it out - proved to be the surroundings as seen from a horizontal position and moving towards the ground [Translation for non-tweakers: I woke as I was falling to the ground]. I really did some hurting to myself that way.
Now a days, while I still may be stubborn about going to bed, I will usually put myself into my bed [if I'm not already there working on the computer] by the third near miss [i.e.: Catch myself/wakeup]- not [i]always though...
My trouble now is my bed itself: I usually sleep in it - when I do... - sitting on the side where I sit and use my computer.Well it sorta slants or has a slight slope [perhaps caused by my constant sitting there?].
On top of that, when I do nod off these days, I end up lurching or lauching myself, with painful results. As you may have guessed [that is, if you're still reading this with any interest and know anything about my older posts...] it was such an occasion that I received that concussion three months ago...And I am at present sporting a black eye/split eyebrow [slipped/launched off the bed last week, hitting my head on the corner of the computer - which has the cover off while I'm fixing it. There's also a 1 1/2 inch cut right between the eyes I got this past Friday night/Saturday morning, when I slammed my head into a rack of file drawers.
There's a few reasons that I stay up aslong as I do.
One, which I have mentioned here before, is due to my being bi-polar. Even without any sort of artificial stimulation I will stay up for over two days at a time anyway. And by the use of said stimulants , I can extend the manic part of the cycle until I can no longer stay awake. So I sleep during what would have otherwise been a very equally dark depression.
[I already know that the system isn't ultimatly sustainable; that each cycle a little bit is lost and entropy takes a little more ground. Oh well is alls I can say.]
But another reason that I stay up so much: I want to spend as much time as I can living my life, not sleeping it off.
I know there's going to be those at the flamethrower, ready, who will jump in to tell me that the time I might gain by being up so many hours at atime would be totally negated by damage done to the system by such activities - despite efforts to minimize them.
Well that might be true for most folks; those who expect - or have every good reason to believe
they can expect to get the full 75+ years that modern science & medicine have given the world.
But what about those who [i]don't expect such and have very good reason to believe that their time is nearing its upper limit? And I don't mean that I'm terminally ill - though in a sense I am; as are you and you and everyone in the world is...but that's too philosophicel for me right now.
What I do mean, is this: Most who know me know that my back's fuckered up. Well it's fuckered up due to a progressive degenerative disease. This disease is something that I inherited from my maternal grandfather, whom I never got to meet since he died before I was born.
He died from a heart attack.
Heart trouble [like his] is one of the several complications that can come with the disease.
He had his first [of three] attacks at 43.
He died at 49.
I'm 39; 4 years younger than my Grandfather when he had his firstattack.
Last summer [almost a year ago, now..] it's very possible/quite likely [depending on who you're talking to...] that I had a heart attack. I'm not sure if I did or not. Either way it brought home the point of how much/little time I [b]might have left.
And I certainly would hate to think thaty I spent most of it asleep.
**[The strangest thing that I've yet had happen to me occured back in '95: I woke up in the middle of a conversation with a friend - mid-sentance, almost mid-word! I mean there I was, having just finished saying a word, and not knowing what it refered to, or what word[s] were to come next!
It may not sound all that big a deal, I know. Just you try it sometime, then come back and we'll talk ;-).**

It is not bullshit my friends, I know a man who has been up for at least 2 weeks because he was all tweaked out. After being up for about two weeks he came to smoke a bowl with us and started wigging out. He was tripping off a bowl of shwag because he had been up so long. Of course he is used to staying up for long periods, he is about 44 and tweaks all the time. Staying up for a week is nothing to him.

If i stayed awake for a week my head would be splattered against the wall behind me, too much living in such a short time would fuck me up, i know this after staying awake only 3 days

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
Why on earth would you stay up that long just to hallucinate?
Thats what benidryl is for.... instead of staying up for over 70 hours if you take enough of this your body and mind feels like its been up for 70 hours with out the hazardess chemichal that not sleeping for that long leaves in your system.. So if you want to hallucinate from lack of sleep... dont go with out sleep for that long... just take some pill that will do it for you

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
Why stay up that long to hallucinate? To see if we could. We could've just taken a bunch of Gravol pills, again, but we just wanted to know if it was true.
Shit, I *used* to be proud of only needing 3 or 4 hours of sleep for every 24 hours I'm awake. I'm only 16, but I don't want to waste my life, so I do as much as I can in as little time as possible.

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
The Nazis did a study, I believe, on how long the average human (and many animals) can stay up without dying. Lookitup. Past a week, to me, seems incredibly sketchy. They get some sort of "sleep" in. They must drop into that theta state periodicly, and get some REM in - otherwise, surely, they'd die.
I hated my life before I started sleeping more. It changes everything.

Actually, a dyphenhydramine overdose is a pretty good substitute for a few days awake. Extreme fatigue, delerium, the utter idiocy of the entire situation, etc...

Hallucinations are your brain sleeping while your eyes are open. I've stayed up for 11 days, and I know tweakers who've stayed up for weeks, or even months. There is no real limit, for your brain will sleep-even if the rest of your bosy doesn't.

While diphenhydramine does cause seirous hallucinations, it doesn't work by making your brain think you've been up for days. The triedness is simply a side effect of the drug [hence the reason its found in OTC sleeping pills]. Its an antihistamine, and it simply poisons you. Obviously when you do like 500mg or 600mg its not lethal [you can probably go upto a few grams before OD'ing, though you'd be in a seriously fucked up state] though.
And kman, while its true, you brain will find ways to rest if you deprive yourself of slee, I find it very VERY hard to believe that soemone could stay up for months. Like others have said, as you deprive your body of sleep you weaken your immune system. So if you were up for months, the tiniest of germs that wouldn't even cause you to get a sniffle when practicing normal sleeping habbits, could be lethal. And considering we come in contact with all kindof germs everyday, I can't beleieve someone stayed up for months [even with the help of meth to keep you awake, you'd still be vulnerable to illness']

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
ive done month long meth bingers a few times tweaking. I DIDNT DIE. staying up is fun, has different effects on some ppl, but for me it doesnt make me hallucinate, but my imagination is more active. plus when you been up for awhile, weed gets you like 3 times higher for some reason.
i think the human body doesnt require sleep, but it gives the (whatever brain chemical that makes you stay up) a rest, so the energy spent staying up, is spent pumping out chemicals that will even out the balance in your brain. so it isnt neccesary to live, just takes more energy out of you(whether that energy burns from fat, or important parts(hence the danger).
last time i stayed up i went a week 1/2 without hardly any food and i was tweaked out of my mind after the last day it took athile to get to sleep, i had to force myself.
i dont think you can die from sleep deprivation, actually i stay up for a week at a time quite often, and i am in pretty good health(6:12 mile)
speakin of tweak i have one opinion:
it is not bad for you, just dont develope a tolerence. take time apart between your tweak-fests!!! and you wont have any problem.
i never feel bad or haevy withdrawal or brain damage or anything just makes me talk real fast like this because i just did like 1 1/2 grams of annie. and when you been up for awhile shit doesnt make alot of sense, just go with it and analyse later and youll be fine, if you think too much youll come to irrational conclusions about things. like right now i dont know if im making a whole lot of sense, but ill read it tommorow and think either 'damn thats a tweaked out muthafucka' or 'wow my grammars getting better.'

Re: tripping out from staying up too long
I think most people who stayed up for over a week got some sleep, even if they just passed out for a couple minutes. Longest ive gone was 4 days, I can't imagine staying up too much longer, at least not without a ton of meth

I usually stay up for 2 days at a time, or like i cant go to sleep unless teh sun comes up in the morning. Or when i get real wasted i pass out at 10 sleep 2 hours and stay up for a couple days. I havent done tweak but if i do i know im gonna be like up for a week. Im gonna try meth soon though, cause i want too and so does my friend heatherr, and so she has some friends who do it, so we are going too.
