And the kid with the sideways ball cap on says "But why--I can see just fine."
Well, the point isn't so much to see, but to be seen. With winter coming on, days are shorter, and ambient light is dimmer.
More and more drivers are Baby Boomers in their fifties--the oldest of us are now over 60--and our reflexes are slowing and our eyesight is going.
More and more younger drivers are either drunk, stoned on meth and/or pot, yakking on cell phones, watching DVDs, texting, listening to MP3s, eating Big Macs, slurping double lattes, getting BJs--in other words, doing ANYTHING but paying attention!
Driving with your lights on increases the odds of your getting from point A to point B without having some fool run into you.
Of course, it doesn't help much here in Alaska when a 1500-pound bull moose runs right out in front of you, but still. . . .

I'm always afraid of looking like an idiot or getting pulled over for being the only one with my headlights on. Even when it's just after it's done raining, and everyone has daytime running lights. I don't have those. My car is older than I am, and they didn't have them way back then.

Let us also note that DRLs do NOT turn on your brake lights. Turn your actual headlights on.

Yeah, there are certain roads around here that require you to have your headlights on no matter WHAT time of day it is.
Also - stoned on meth? I'd love to see that.

Wrong, Sparky.
I drive every day, and drove a heavily-loaded SUV from PA to Alaska about twenty years ago.
The last time I was involved in an accident was 1982--I was stopped at a light and some kid took the corner too wide and t-boned me.
The last time I got a ticket was 1989.
How does your record compare with that?

Are you joking? Stoned on pot, driving when your high is not hard at all, I admit when I first started doing it, it was kind of hard because I didn't have my liscence(Still don't) but now its really easy. Every time I drive I'm usually high.

I drive high all the time, you pretty much can learn to do anything/everything a little high. Shit, I can smoke and talk on the phone and eat if I had to.
AND I drive a standard car. If you wanna bitch at someone I think American bitches are getting too lazy with all this automatic shit, people should learn standard no matter what, and then they can pick one or the other (I'd pick standard, MMM)
I gotta agree with the OP in the sense that a bunch of dumb people are driving around..

Not joking. Sure, one can drive on pot, but not as safely.
Given the number of impaired and/or inattentive drivers on the road, a sensible person--which evidently lets you out--does whatever he can to avoid accidents.

Cops are more likely to stop all you 'I can really drive, hyuckhyuckyuck!' Assholes who drive at night with no headlights or just one light.
Every shithead & his ma likes to shout out what a cool & wonderful driver he is? Uhhuh...
It must be about the only thing you're any good at & how likely is that? A dumbshit all over the rest of your life but an A#1 Driver!?
Sure...
Arms, how are Alaskans about checking their lights are on/both work at night? I don't know about you...but I find a car with no lights/one light is very dreamlike?
In other words, even if I see & acknowledge a poorly lit car, it is hard to really par attention to it? I can see it...but it seems kinda imaginary & easy to forget.
Like the way a bicyclist with no lights is hard to pay attention to. Well lit objects are processed differently in the brain.
I wonder? I know there are statistics on the accident rate for vehicles of different colors? I guess there are for two lights/one & no lights too?

Actually, I drive better, at night, with my headlights off. I can see farther and more clearly when there isn't any light...
I hate my night vision.

Actually, driving with a headlight out--or a tail light-- will get you pulled over.
I once asked a local shade tree mechanic (who was also a drunk--walks with a cane now, after TWO drunk-driving snowmachine crashes)-- to work on my car and he neglected to fix a bad tail light--I got pulled over twice in 24 hours, once my a local cop and once by a state trooper.
Now I take my car to a mechanic who is also a member of the local NA group.

LOL a car with their headlights on at 12 noon has never made me see it better. The sun reflecting off the paint is brighter then the headlights. People who drive with their headlights on during the day should be ran off the road.

I hate those halogen lights I think they are called. They are the ones that are kinda blue-ish. They are just distracting when a pair is flashing in your eyes at night head on.

Re: Drivers--use headlights 24/7
I don't get how having headlights on in the day makes a car any more visible. The daylight just drowns out any light from the headlights, like turning on a flashlight in a brightly lit room...I dunno, I guess it's safer.
I always put my lights on during a rainy day though, even if it's not currently raining.

Re: Drivers--use headlights 24/7
I always point lasers at the eyes of oncoming drivers so they know I am there. If I get the chance I also get the drivers in front of me by reflecting the laser off their car's mirror.
It works because there are fewer cars to crash into.
Maybe there is low visibility because you live in Alaska.

Yeah, until you hit a deer.
That said, I admit to having done that myself as a child. Fun, but very stupid and dangerous.

Dusk is the absolute WORST time to have headlights coming at you. Your headlights do fuck all for your own vision and it blinds the other driver much longer than if it were at night.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, moved here about twenty years ago.
I was twelve when Alaska became a state.

Thanks for thinking of me.
Just in the interests of accuracy--although I have done a shitload of booze and drugs in my life (starting in 1953), I never got into meth, and quit using pretty much all drugs (especially tobacco and alcohol) over five years ago.
I DO live in Alaska, however. How clever of you to notice.
