This isn't the first time some like this this has happened either.

In schoolwork of any sort, girls almost always say "I think the answer is..." and might top it off with "but I'm probably wrong" while men say "No Look! The answer is..." with confidence.

Do girls pull this kind of shit on purpose because society forces them to conform to an image of ditsyness or what?

I think, with the media and the way women are commonly treated as objects it becomes easy for them to just give up on sounding the least it intelligent. Because a lot of the "popular" girls aren't that smart (they pay too much attention to friends, sexual stuff and drugs to study mostly) some girls think that's how you get people to like you and follow suit. I think that whole 'dumb, ditzy woman' phase is ending. has been for a while. that used to be the stereotype: strong, dominant man knows better than the ditzy, confused woman...always.

but if you look at pop. media (tv, movies, commercials), there is a very different idea being marketed to the masses. its almost opposite to the stereotype described above; the man is usually shown as almost a primitive creature, a doofus who continuously screws things up in a commical way...only to be bailed out by his watchful woman, who is portrayed as the 'more evolved/refined' (for lack of a better description) creature....she laughs off his childish/immature mistakes,etc and corrects it....how cute. pop culture is showing man as an imbecile incapable of thriving in society without a strong, guiding woman behind him to correct his errors.

But to answer the question posed in the thread title.... yes, that one girl really is that dumb. It seems to me kids these days are getting dumber and dumber. seen the movie 'idiocracy'? Science fiction eventually becomes science fact, given enough time.

A LOT of middle/high school even onto college, girls are just to preoccupied with how they look, their reputation, what they're wearing? Why? Because from a very young age we're taught that our attractiveness is constantly being judged. We have to e sexy, but not too sexy otherwise we're a "whore".

But I digress, it's a matter of priorities. Where I come from, the hot girls are smart as hell, well book smart. And I don't think it's an exception, nor do I think girls being stupid is the rule.

Their brains are capable of understanding, computing, what have you, they choose (without really knowing their making that choice) to focus on other things like make-up techniques and boyfriend schedules.

What I'm saying is, girls who aren't too concerned with the way other people perceive them are the one's whose mental space is clear for cooler things like astronomy and really good jam bands.

Around here most of the girls fit the "moron" category. Even in college, they're EVERYWHERE. Sooo, so ditzy. I haven't a clue how some of these people manage to put their socks on in the morning, let alone how the hell they made it out of high school.

I had to do this group project for one of my classes with 3 other girls. After we finished discussing the project we just sat around and talked for a while. And about what? Makeup, sex, hair, clothes and boys. I KID YOU NOT. Honestly, I don't need intimate details on how obsessed you are with your boyfriend's penis, or what color eye shadow makes your ass look big.

Bah. But I digress. Boys are no better. Most of my boyfriends guy friends can't carry on a conversation beyond cars or hockey and football. Boys aren't ditzy though, so they win. Ditzy girls inspire deathly rage in me. I may be a lot of things, including bitchy, clumsy, crazy, and the messiest eater EVER, but the day I become ditzy is the day I'll kill myself.

Girls are pretty stupid, not necessarily in the acedemic sense but when it comes to decision making and common sense. I have no idea why.

Well, I know that they suck at decision making because they decide things based purely off of emotions with little logic, but as far as common sense and book smarts, I have no idea.

Girls don't want to seem smart. Smart girls don't last in relationships or marriages as long because they can be independant. When a girl is stupid, she's usually dependant on the guy, and the relationship lasts longer. Atleast in one where they live in the same house.

I call bullshit. If a girl can learn how to tie her shoes, she can learn how to change a tire. But changing a tire is a physical task. Of course a girl is going to get the hell out of that task by saying "I don't understand. All that car stuff is for men to do." Shit I could just easily go half ass on dishwashing and say "I don't know how to wash dishes correctly because my mom used to do that and it seems to be more of a woman thing." But that of course would be utter bullshit.

If I cared enough, a girl could teach me anything. As a girl can be taught anything. Even about makeup. It's not like men used to run the makeup industry anyways, right?

I don't see why people class talking about clothes and stuff to be ditzy? What's wrong with talking about an interest? Its the same as people who sit around and talk about music, or TV shows.

I dunno, your post described one of my friends a lot, and the type of conversations we have together. We sit and talk about fashion and clothes, shoes, makeup for hours on end - for the simple fact that that is our interest (and not to mention a lot of what look into in university together). Does that make me a ditzy bitch? That same girl I can have a full on art historical debate with, and is that where you choose to call us something else (say, pseudo-intellectuals?)

I've been amazed by the stupidity of some girls. I don't think they act like that on purpose, that's what makes it even worse.

It's actually quite wierd because I'm doing an investigation for 30% of my final grade at the moment for the psychology course I'm doing.

Introduction:



The issue of gender and intelligence is a very controversial and hotly debated topic. Although there have been investigations in the past that have tried to prove otherwise, the general consensus of the psychological community is that there are no great differences in cognitive ability between males and females apart from a wider range of Intelligence Quotients (I.Q) in males.

Perhaps more important, and more insightful into out society is how males and females see themselves in terms of their own estimated intelligence. In past studies (Beloff, 1992; Bennet, 1996) a consistent trend has been visible, namely that males generally self-estimate themselves higher than women estimate themselves. But when participants were questioned about the individual components of intelligence ( problem solving, abstract thought, comprehending ideas and concepts etc.) there was no marked difference in self estimation. Between the genders. This difference indicates that intelligence in a broad sense is a trait associated with males.

This pre-conception is not confined to the individuals self estimation but extends to estimation of other’s intelligence. Past studies such as Hogan (1978) and Higgins (1987) have consistently shown that when participants were asked to estimate their parents I.Q the vast majority estimated their father’s to be higher than their mother’s.

To put this into context, we must first define what is meant by the term “intelligence” and thus what an “intelligence quotient” is actually a measure of. The idea of what exactly intelligence is still debated but is loosely accepted to be the ability to understand the relationships between things and apply this to new circumstances. The ability to do so is split into individual components such as reasoning, planning, problem solving, comprehension of concepts and abstract thought and the ability to learn new things. Psychometric testing (intelligence testing) can be used as a tool to measure I.Q. These tests are designed to test an individuals proficiency in each of the component parts of intelligence, and comprises of puzzles and tasks such as questions about shapes to test spatial reasoning for example or small memory tasks to test short term memory. This is generally accepted as a sound measurement of intelligence.

To find out more about gender and self estimated I.Q we must also look into “self concept” , which is an individuals perception of their identity and self estimated ability in relation to others around themselves. One of the most influential researchers to investigate the self concepts was Carl Rogers (1947), he believed that the self is the core of the human personality and therefore that the self was a product of relationships between people. He also believed that that there is a basic human need for positive encouragement which encourages peoples tendency towards self actualisation (Purkey & Schmidt, 1987) This supports the view that people and their sense of self is influenced by conditional positive regard and interpersonal relationships, so t why is it that females estimate themselves lower than males in intelligence?

There must be something that affects females this way, the trend is even visible in young children. Raty, Kiisken, Kasanen and Nykky (2004) found in their study that children in the U.S.A as young as 2nd Grade perceived intelligence as a male trait. In this study children in 2nd, 4th and 6th grade were asked to name the pupil in their class who they thought was the best at that particular subject. When the 4th grade class were asked about who was the best at maths the boys consistently named only other boys and the majority of girls named only boys even though statistically boys and girls were equally matched in their test grades. This trend was not visible in the second grade, which shows there must be something in that children observe to make them associate intelligence with males at such a tender age.

Hogan (1978) argued that perceived gender differences in intelligence is due to females being “socially rewarded” by denying equality with males. This would encourage males to believe they are superior while at the same time giving girls the idea that they are inferior to the male sex, which could account for the trend of under estimation in females. But the majority of these studies were performed quite a few years ago and society has changed significantly since then. Women have come a long way in terms of rights and societies view towards a women’s role in society has also changed significantly post second wave feminism.

Therefore the aim of this investigation is too see whether the difference between genders in self estimated I.Q is still prevalent today. The experimental hypothesis for this investigation is that when asked to estimate their own I.Q a higher proportion of males will estimate themselves above average intelligence than females. .The null hypothesis for this investigation is therefore that there will be no significant difference between the average self estimated I.Q of males and females.
