Leading double lives and keeping secrets from the one you're with
I know everyone has differing personalities depending on the situation you're in...like you dont act the same way around your parents and family as you do your friends, or teachers, or the person you're in a relationship with. i know every guy in here says some cheesy, lame shit to their girl that they'd never want their friends to hear them say, because it'd be embarrassing. But not talking about just acting differently, i'm talking more about keeping secrets.
How open is everyone here with their real selves....for instance, the girl I date doesn't know half the time when I go out drinking and partying hard with my friends after she's left my place for the night...thinking I'm staying in and studying, or just relaxing etc...while in reality I'm out at the bar or a frat party or something else. Also keeping things like drug use from them....like I would never tell her I do coke, and I doubt she thinks I do....and there are other things that I just don't bring up about myself, and actually think I actively keep hidden. I intend to keep it that way....it's just that I think she sees me one way, as a smart, responsible, respectable guy....which is all true. But theres a lot more to me that isn't out there in the open, and as close as I am to her, I don't want her knowing the other half of me...the nocturnal, irresponsible party animal....
anyone else here keep any secrets like that, or feel like they are almost living as a different person around their girl? if you know what I mean...

Pretty much everything you said describes me. Girls don't dig coke, I dunno why. I do a lot of it though.

Re: Leading double lives and keeping secrets from the one you're with
I've been married for 7 years, so I guess my situation is a little different to most posters.
I pretty much act the same at home as I do at work as I do when out with friends. I obviously tone it down the innuendo's and swearing a bit around the kids, and keep the smart arse comments to myself at work, but I am me most of the time.
Marriage teaches you that you can be yourself, because you have nothing to prove to anyone, and noone to impress. Well, it's taught me that, anyway....
I still wander down the street and say random things to random girls, cause it's funny. I can turn any comment into something sexual, usually just by raising an eyebrow - and can almost always guarantee a laugh. I'll sit in a meeting drawing funny pictures, just because I can.
And if people don't like it - they can shove it right up their arse.... I'm not here to impress other people - I'm here to have fun!

Re: Leading double lives and keeping secrets from the one you're with
So you lie by omission.
I'm only open with who I choose. That's not a lot of people.
There is a difference between being private and being fake. It sounds like you're being fake.

No, I'm not being fake. I know what you mean though. I have the same personality around her as I do around my friends for the most part, except I'm more talkative with her than with my friends. When I go out I usually tell her later that I met my friends for drinks, and she knows I party hard and get wasted a lot, and have in the past. I do lie by omission with her, like I won't volunteer some information...but, if she asked me certain questions, I would probably lie. there's just some things about me I don't want her to know. I guess it's mostly about the coke...but there are other things. like for spring break I'm meeting up with my best friend in another city and we're going to go to a big spring break location for the weekend to party like rockstars, and i'm sure i won't tell her the whole truth about what goes on there... The thing is, we are both in the greek system at our university; im in a frat, she's in a sorority....so we run in the same circle of people for the most part. and if we split up later I wouldnt want her having some dirt on me that she could spread around to ruin my reputation

It's funny - the older you get, the more you realise how important it is to be yourself. And the more you don't give a shit about what other people think.

Re: Leading double lives and keeping secrets from the one you're with
No, I'm not ashamed to present myself as am to anyone. No matter if I'm with my friends, my boyfriend, my parents, in an interview. I love myself and have been told I'm too forward at times.
I couldn't imagine leading a "double life" I'd feel fake and I'd feel like shit. Right now I think I'm the coolest person in the fucking world, why the hell would hide that?
Maybe you need to spend some time in self-reflection.
