Son, now you're an adult.
About an hour ago my eldest turned 18.
Which means I feel rather old and also can't really figure out where the years have gone.
There are some things I'd like to say to him but I won't, not yet anyway.
So I'm going to say them here (its parenting so it can go under 'affection').And maybe someone here can take something from them.
"Son, you're now an adult. I'd like to have some words of wisdom for you now, something deep and meaningful that would guide you , that would give you some foundations. But I don't.
All I can say is LIVE. Go out there and do anything and everything you want to do.Pack as much as you can into the next couple of years.
DO I want you to go back to college? Yes very much so. Do I want you to sleep with anything in a skirt, get drunk every night and do drugs? No, not really but I'd rather you 'lived for the burn and sting of pleasure' now, as we used to say, then live with regrets later.
Try and keep to the simple rule "if it harm none then do what you will".
Learn from the times you fuck up.If you don't fuck up then you probably aren't liivng enough.
You ain't got no kids, no responsiblities, no duties. Go somewhere. Do something, anything but just live.
Most important of all, find out who you are and who you aren't, find out what you want. What you really like doing.
AND FIND SOMEONE TO SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE DOING IT WITH."

......."Also, get a job and help with the rent you fucking bum?"
What did you get him for his birthday, jackketch?
Edit: Sorry, that probably sounded malicious. I was wondering what a guy like you would get a kid for his birthday is all.

way to make me feel like crap. I've only had a couple of real brave/living life moments since I left home at age 17 (year and a half ago). most of it has been being unemployed, or working really shit jobs.
So jack, since you're being all parental, I'm young, fit, poor, and completely bored of life. what the fuck do I do?

Sounds like you badly need a dose of irresponsibilty!
Hit the road and do a Kerouac. Don't much matter where you go or what you do. Gather what cash you can, a towel, a packet of condoms and a change of clothes and just go. No planning or great thinking about it before hand.
Phone your boss and tell him to colour you 'gone', put the keys through the landlord's door on your way outta town.
Drive,Hitch-hike, walk, ride trains hobo like whatever.
Whay have you always wanted to see, visit, do or eat? Go do that and take it from there.

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
For those interested he got the following so far:
$200 cash from his Nan (whch he is off up the City now to spend wisely and maturely...)
A new Cell phone ($160)from his Granddad
(who has taken total leave of his senses. My son has lost every single phone so far within days!)
$20 from his Aunt.
A passport from me and his mom ($130)and another $50 cash so he and his mates can go for a drink today.
$60 cash from his other Nan
and last but not least a PC game from his other aunt...which was a 12 rated!!! (she, his aunt, is a bit strange).

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
Son has just turned up having spent US$ 260 on a piece of painted wooden board and four seperate green rubber wheels....
(obviously the Seller was fresh out of Magic Beans)
Ok I admit it IS a nice looking piece of board, from the firm 'Enuff', which seems strangely appropriate somehow.
OH MY BAD...apparently it is a Skateboard...
It seems nowadays that $260 won't even cover assembly.
*shakes head and feels old*

Further to the skateboard:
There are loud hammering noises coming from his bedroom so I called up stairs to tell that him 1.If he is hammering then he's probably doing something wrong! (no Daddy knows fuck all about Sk8boards but Daddy IS a trained mechanic and might be worth listening to!) and 2. IF HE IS MISUSING ONE OF MY GOOD WRENCHES AS A HAMMER THEN HE WON'T MAKE 19!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't have to hammer anything at all on a skateboard when you put it together, and on that note you should never have to pay 260 dollars for a skateboard, that's about a hundred dollars over priced. Those where some very wise words to Jack.

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
Well, my parents were married young, my mom wanted out when i was around 13, my dad pretty much broke down cause he loved her so much. I seen my dad at some all time lows and hated him for it, but i've grown and so as he in these last 6 years. He's become a great father, and an awesome friend. My mom left me here for her boyfriend across the country, so i moved out at 18 and been living on my own for over a year. I was worried i was letting him down, but one day before we hit the bar and we were sippin on some rum and coke, he told me. "son, you do what makes you happy..Im proud of you" ..that one line just made all the difference. Just those few words gave me so much strength.

It seemed an aful lot to me too so I checked on line. He didn't pay $260 just for the skateboard, there was some other 'stuff' (don't ask!!!). He paid about $60 for the board and about the same for the wheel thingys.

Well it all depends, he probably got nice trucks (like axels) and barrings (go inside wheels to make em spin nice and long) and of course the wheels and deck.

Yes and then he hammered the rubber wheel thingys onto bearing runs...thus fucking the bearings I would imagine.

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
He has just reappeared sporting a very white pair of trainers ('sneakers' for the Americans among us).
Apparently they are 'proper sk8ta shoes Dad!'('buuut they are magical beans...'??) and should have cost $120 but he got them a lot cheaper.
"Airwalks" for those who care about such things.
Personally I don't understand why he doesn't just buy a pair of paras and forget about having to buy shoes for the next 2 years. Its probably a fashion thang and I wouldn't understand.
Of course, these new ones won't last a month as he uses them to brake with when skating.

Man, I didn't know there were such old men on Totse.
I could tell you the wildest of tales
My friend the giant and traveling sales
Tell you all the times that I failed
The years all behind me
The stories exhaled.
And I'm drying out
Crying out
This isn't how I go
I could tell you of a man not so tall
Who said life's a circus and so we are small
Tell you of a girl that I saw
I froze in the moment and she changed it all
And I'm drying out
Crying out
This isn't how I go
Hurry now
Lay me down
And let these waters flow
Flow...
Son I am not everything you thought that I would be
But every story I have told is part of me
And you keep the air in my lungs
Floating along as a melody comes
And my heart beats like timpani drums
Keeping the time while a symphony strums
And I'm drying out
Crying out
This isn't how I go
Hurry now
Lay me down
And let these waters flow...
Flow....
Let it flow
Let it flow
Son I am not everything you thought that I would be

Son I leave you now but you have so much more to do
And every story I have told is part of you

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
Well when you skate, shoes make alot of difference in grip and it's a hell of alot more comfortable landing a seven stair in skating shoes than in a pair of tennis shoes. It's also alot cheaper to get good skate shoes otherwise you're gonna be wearing out normal shoes every few weeks, I don't really like Airwalks for some reason but Vans to me are extremely comfortable and they last awhile. Make sure to tell him to not break with the middle of his upper foot or he's gonna get a big ass hole in the middle of the shoe and that sucks, tell him to use the very tip of the shoe because that area is very thick. I rephrase my other statement about hammering, sometimes you do need to hammer the wheels on the bearing to get them in tight, don't worry about the bearings, they are made to take so much pressure that if they are quality it'll take at least a year to break them from heavy skating, my lucky ceramic bearings have been skated by me for two or three years and they are still fantastic.
A word on the deck also, there really isn't a need to waste $60 on a graphic ridden deck when you can spend $30 bucks on a Goodwood or a Mini Logo deck that is just as good and alot of the time, better. I've also come to find that Mob grip tape is the best grip tape (the black grippy stuff on top of the deck, hence grip) I have ever tried.

That is quite irrisponsible.
Apart from anything, if he's got his own appartment, he might well have got a 'guarantor'.
Which means if he fucks off without notice, whoever that guarantoor is is probably going to get assfucked for atleast a months rent and damages.
Shit jobs are part of life, rabbitweed. You get a shit job. You gain experience. You get a slightly less shitty job. You gain experience. Eventually you'll have had so many shit jobs and gained so much experience you'll level up and WOO! get a not quite so shit job!

No, eventually you'll be middle managment in a fucking small town macdonalds.
You do shit jobs until you can undertake training (whether that be university, basic training, police college, a trade apprenticeship, whatever) so you can get a job that's better and less shameworthy than being a peasant for a multinational corporation.

That's true unless you're very lucky. I've never had a high earning job, but I had a job that I loved and did for 10 years +. Training and education is the better choice.

Good. The day I don't manage to at least piss one person off is the day they can colour me 'dead'.
There are a lot of people here on &T who get right up my tar lined nose but that's the strength of totse. I think I can say, hand on heart, that the posters who have pissed me off the most are also some of the posters who have also given me the most .
For example, everytime i read something 'Pro Choice' here I feel like punching the screen. But reading such Fem-Nazi diatribes has helped me have more understanding for the women involved.

My dad didn't even take me for a pint on my 18th. No words of advice from either of my parents.
My granddad had a few though: "Never argue with a woman son, you can't win. If they're right, they'll gloat about it for a week. If you're right, they'll make your life miserable for a week."

Fuck that. Here's better advice: be a gentleman and don't put up with any sass or bitchiness from a woman.

Wow I'm so glad neither of my parents ever even tried to dispense their words of wisdom on me like that.
I just don't have that kind of relationship with them where we, you know, talk about things with each other.
They more or less let me on my own years ago and I'm glad for that.

So jack, since you're being all parental, I'm young, fit, poor, and completely bored of life. what the fuck do I do?
You know the answer is to MOVE out of small towns and get back to Wellington.

we're men, its not our right to pick a side in that debate .
AND FIND SOMEONE TO SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE DOING IT WITH.
that is very true. because then you age, and youth is wasted on the young. if you haven't said that to him, you should. its more meaning ful than anything i was told at that age...
just don't be surprised if you get a random phone call a continent away out of lonelyness . it happens to the best of us.

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
Good parenting. I wish my parents were as chill as you, every time I leave the house I hear something along the lines of "don't do anything illegal, we don't want you getting arrested again." Granted I should be out of this house already really, I turn 21 next month I should have been out almost 3 years ago and I definitely need to get the fuck out as soon as possible!
EDIT: Oh that doesn't even touch on all the little "don't have premarital sex" shit I've heard from my dad.

LOL, my 'party' advice to him was "remember son, most of the people there (at the party) were conceived at parties I went to" and then I handed him a packet of condoms.
That rather shook him...

Re: Son, now you're an adult.
I just have to add this:
He may be a man now. But when he goes to university he will become a child again.
When I was 18 in my gap year I was a man. I worked from 7am to 5pm on a building site. I bought an old banger (1969 MG Midget for those interested) which I fixed up my self. I used to cook, clean and pay rent to my parents for the privilege of having a bedroom. I had a nice, sensible girl. I never got too drunk or did any drugs. I helped out at the local primary school, doing a woodworking class.
Now I'm at university. I whine to my parents about how expensive everything is, I always ask for more money. I'm a sexual predator. I smoke weed about once a fortnight and take ecstasy regularly. I even ate shitty food for a week so that I could afford some cocaine (it was worth it). I have a fuckbuddy and I don't love her, even though she has professed that she's become attached to me and would be upset if I slept with anyone else (which I do). I get drunk a lot. I stay up listening to the Rolling Stones and techno. I actually like going clubbing. I don't get up until midday and I miss most of my lectures, and although I get good marks for my essays and I talk a lot in my discussion groups, I hardly do any work (maybe about 10 hours a week total). I spend most of my time very slowly working on my MG, or more accurately, driving around the town looking for chavs to race (I invariably win - light, rear wheel drive car always wins, even if its 40 years old and only has 80hp). When I go home I eat all day just because it's free. This is what university does to you.
I still cook though. I'm the best fucking student cook you ever saw. Who'da thought that a 20p tin of tomatoes could taste so good?
edit - I also steal things. Started off small like pint glasses when I was drunk. Then barstools and the clock off of the wall.
edit 2 - When I was living on campus in my first year, I had a dartsboard on my wall (forbidden) and at the end of the year I filled all the holes in the surrounding wall with white toothpaste. Oh and I smashed up the ceiling, but that was an accident. Didn't pay my fine for it though.

Sixty dollars or pounds is cheap for a deck. He probably got ripped off or a sweet deal. Well, if its a short board than it is pretty expensive but average I suppose. Green wheels sounds like a longboard to me... What brand is it =)
