Default Since womens menstral cycles are in sync with our lunar cycles...

Do you think women on Mars would end up having longer/shorter cycles?

Or is it just a coincidence that women have their periods in accordance with the changes of the moon?

This is serious stuff by the way.

the menstural and lunar cycles have nothing to do with each other, otherwise all women would get periods at the same time.

I dont think it has anything to do with the moon. But the human body has its own circadian cycle.

They did an experiment where they took a bunch of people and stuck them down in a cave somewhere cut off completely from daylight. No tv, no clocks, no nothing. No way to keep track of time. They had games and activities and everything, and the people were allowed to sleep whenever they were tired. And sure enough, they ended up sleeping about 8 hours, and staying awake for 16 hours.

Despite the change in the environment, the body is still on a 24 hour cycle. I imagine it'd be the same way with menstrual cycles on mars. Although, I always thought it was a coincidence that the periods lined up with the moon. I dont see how it could affect something like that.

Another interesting thing I heard. If women live together, then their menstrual cycles start to synchronize. It means that the body sends out hormones or pheremones or signals or something that other people can pick up on. I thought that was pretty cool...

Lawl, it's a pain in the ass when you have three women in the house and all the tampons are gone in two days.

Its in sync with the four poles of the sun. The sun's poles rotate to a new orientation every 28 days.

However, you may have heard that grouped together, women tend to have their periods at the same time. Rather interesting, so there is some physiological factors which determine that "special time of the month".

Eh, I don't mind sticking around for a few hours of "cuddling", provided you had some good hard liquor close to at hand.

Yes its just a coincidence that the 28 nominal human cycle is the same as the lunar cycle. Our closest living relatives , chimps have a 36 day cycle.

For a while, I lived with 4 girls... they had all been living together for a long time and as Silent said, their menstrual cycles aligned for one hard hitting batch of PMT related bitching per month.

Four... at... once...

After the second month I started to hit the booze monthly. The funny thing was that they asked why!

Edit - just a note, when some people are kept in isolation, they will revert to a 36 hour cycle and start going crazy...

The reason women living together fall onto the same cycle is simply that all women have some level of testosterone in there bodies whichever girl has the most is the Alpha female the other females in the group will synchronize to her cycle.

My high school biology teacher taught us that he talked about menstrual cycles a lot actually.

I recall reading that most animals are synched this way, its a sort of light sensitivity so that the one day with lots of light (full moon) coincides with the beginning of something. Can't remember if its supposed to be menstruation or ovulation. Supposedly, humans have screwed it up by inventing artificial sources of light. I read this on Damn Interesting, but I can't seem to find it now.

haha.

i think i read somewhere that it was one of those ceremonial tribal things...so a group of women could regulate their menstrual cycles to the lunar cycle just via that whole being around each other effect.

now, with the way the human body has evolved and the pill and everything, i don't think it's that regular. well, i don't really actually keep track of the lunar cycle either...

I've heard a similar urban legend used to prove, for some reason, that in the abscense of stimuli, people adapt to a 26 hour day. I don't believe that, either.

Despite the change in the environment, the body is still on a 24 hour cycle. I imagine it'd be the same way with menstrual cycles on mars. Although, I always thought it was a coincidence that the periods lined up with the moon. I dont see how it could affect something like that.

Source? Because the study I read was that they were in the dark for only 14 hours and slept for two 4-hour sessions with a 2-hour break in between.

Some people live on a 23.5 hour body clock, and others live on a 24.5 hour body clock. The former are the morning people, the latter the night hawks. Although with today's society of late nights, some morning people are being forced to become night hawks, which is very unhealthy.

its actually a 25 hour cycle. My Ap Psych professor went over the circadian rythm last week
