the ultimatum
my boyfriend doesn't like animals. i do. i happen to have a lot of animals (10 guinea pigs, 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, and 2 rats, to be exact).
a few nights ago, he told me that if i don't get rid of 1 of my dogs, at least 6 of my guinea pigs, and both of the rabbits (leaving me with 4 guinea pigs, 1 dog, and 2 rats) by the time school starts next semester (so by the end of august), he's going to break up with me.
we got in a fight before because we were going to my house and i wanted him to take his truck so that he could drive himself to class the next day while i took my dog to the doggy park. he said that he wasn't going to help me take care of my dog; it turned into a huge fight, and he said that i have a problem with animals and that they take up too much of my time (even though i spend every waking moment with him and in the past 3 months we've only slept apart 2 times).
the only time i spend with my animals is when he's playing a game that i either don't like or is one player, so i basically just have to sit there and watch him. instead, i use that time to play with/take care of my animals. i don't see anything wrong with that. it's not like i'm ignoring him in order to play with them; if anything, he does that to me with his video games.
i'm not looking for an answer, but i am looking for advice. i haven't gotten any new animals since we've been together (i've actually lost 2 - RIP pepe & the brown baby that didn't have a name). so, uh... advice?

Re: the ultimatum
...thats a bit much, seriously...
I dont think I'd date a girl with that many animals. However, thats obviously who you are, and you have a right to be that way. But it seems like maybe you two would be better off breaking up. If you love animals that much, and he hates animals...then maybe you're just not fundamentally compatible.

Based on that sentence which makes it sound as though you don't share a place together yet...who the fuck is he to tell you such a thing?
I could understand it if you lived together and had a committment toward a future together. But...until that day might come...what right does he have to decide what you do or don't have in your own home? He should have no say in the matter at this point.
Now, if I'm wrong and you're living together or have intentions to live together soon...compromise is acceptable under those conditions.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!
Dump him!
Dump him now!!
1-YOU like your pets. They make you HAPPY. He is trying to make you GET RID OF THEM.
This shows he has no respect for your happiness, and that he doesent even care.
2-The pets arent so much the matter as the fact he's trying to dominate you and controll you in such petty spitefull ways.
Today it's your pets, what will it be tomorrow? Is he going to make sure you end up a sad lonely person with no friends and no pets, will he have scared your familly away, will you be incapable of leaving the house without shivering?
3-He's giving you ultimatums.
What fucking right does he have to do that shit to you?!
Please.. Dont chuck away your pets for some bullying piece of shit who isnt worth it.
There are plenty of people out there who like animals, plenty. If he doesent like your pets thats his fucking problem, not yours, not your pets.
Seriously, what right does he have to tell you what to do, what right does he have to tell you how you *have* to live your life?
I'm spitting blood I'm so angry right now.
I beg you,, for yourself and for your pets, get rid of this silly little boy. He's not worth your time.
If you listen to him, you'll never forgive yourself for abandoning your pets. And that's what it will be, abandoning them.
Eventually he'll make you get rid of all of them. No small fat fluffy balls of squidge with big eyes to snuggle up to, no contented purrs when you feed them lettuice, no baby guinea pigs when you start to breed them..
Envision this:
Which would you chose,
these (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/raveyoyo/2-5.jpg), or some guy. Some guy who is so pathetic he's trying to dominate you just for the fucking fun of it.
Silly little boys are expendable. There are thousands of them out there. But a good loving pet is a rare and important thing.
If you want to email me sometime it would be very cool

It's kind of sad...
The first thing I thought when I saw this thread, before I typed the response, or before I even finished reading the OP was 'Damn, yoyo's going to get long winded here.'

he lives in a dorm, and i live at home with my mom. basically, we spend 3 nights a week at his dorm and 4 nights at my house. next semester he's thinking about moving in because my mom is having trouble making the mortgage payments (a perfect example of why you don't follow your kids half way across the country when they go to college, especially if you don't have a job lined up first). if he does that, he's just going to give her the money that he would spend on his dorm and get rid of his meal plan, which would give my mom some extra money and save him some as well by not having a meal plan.

*explodes with rage*
I dont see why it's weird to have alot of pets.
If she was incapable of caring for them, or if the house stank or something, maybe. But from the sound of it she's a good owner.
I'm so..incredibly fucking pissed off right now.
Really. Really really pissed off.
Where do you live, xilikeeggsO?
If you're in the UK I'd be happy to do some travelling if I got to kick the shit out of some bullying asshole.

Wait wait, what?
You're planning on living with the guy, in your mothers home?
I made that mistake once with a previous boyfriend. He moved into my mums house with me. The pressure and stress of being stuck in a miserable little room, and the claustraphobia of constantly being around the two people who know you best... not cool.
It sounds like he's trying to make his life real comfy for himself.
Great! He's going to get cheap housing, cheap food, his bitch will do all the cleaning,
all he has to do now is get rid of those pesky pets..
He's not doing this for you. He's doing it for himself.
If you want to live with someone like that, if you can actually tolerate being in the same room as someone like that without vomiting or killing him..well.

Calm the fuck down psycho bitch. She's got a right to have pets. And you know what? Her boyfriends got a right not to fucking like pets. He doesnt owe her a relationship or anything else. If theres something in the relationship that bothers him, then he's free to ask it be fixed or leave. Whether it be too many pets, or a mole that's just a little too big. He's not making her do shit. She's got a choice either way. It's important enough to him to end the relationship over. He's made that choice. Now she has to make the same choice. And chances are, the relationship probably isnt all that great in the first place if it comes down to this.
However, you dont have the right to kick anyones ass just because they dont love the cuddly little shitbags like you do. So sit down, smoke a few bowls, and kindly shut the fuck up.

1- that's what i told him. he said that they don't make me happy, they're just a burden because i have to take care of them (just like he 'knows' better than i do when i have an orgasm...)
2- that part scared me. when we started going out, we both had people that we were kind of friends with, like we would hang out if it was convenient, but we weren't very close with them. he stopped talking to them and we started spending pretty much all of our time together. a few weeks ago, i started pledging with a sorority, and he tried talking me out of it because 'you have me; you don't need friends' (although i did drop out yesterday because those girls are fucking psycho stalkers, but that's not the point...)
now that i think about it, he is trying to control me. i had a job that i had been wanting to quit for a while because i hated it, and he talked me into quitting so i could spend more time with him, which was great. but now that i'm running out of money and am looking for a job, he gets mad whenever i mention it and tells me i don't need one (i guess i'm going to start shitting money pretty soon, so i won't need to work)
the only reason i haven't kicked him to the curb yet is because when we're not arguing about me getting a job or my animals, he makes me soooo much happier than i've ever been. he's my first boyfriend, which is probably another reason i'm still holding on to him; i like being in a relationship and i don't want it to end. he's the first guy that's been interested in me for more than just sex that i've also been attracted to as well. it's usually guys that i don't like that want relationships with me, and guys that i do like that just want sex.

the amount of guinea pigs is only partially my fault. two of them were pregnant when i got them, which i didn't know, so i ended up with 4 more because of that. my mom and her friend got me the rabbits after one of my guinea pigs died, so that's not really my fault either. i take full responsibility for the 2 dogs, 2 rats, and 6 guinea pigs though.

being stuck with him isn't really an issue... like i said, we spend pretty much all of our time together anyways, just right now its either in his dorm or at my house. if he moves in, it would just be at my house.
the housing isn't going to be any cheaper than it would be to live on campus, and he's going to be spending more on gas than he is now. also, living on campus is a lot more convenient. he doesn't have to clean at all (which i do make him to at my house), he can wake up 10 minutes before class starts and still get there on time (whereas at my house, it takes at least an hour betweeen getting there, finding a parking space, and walking across the parking lot). so he's not just doing it for himself. granted, i'm sure he would rather live in a big, brand new house, but that does come with sacrifices (such as privacy, sleep, internet, cable, etc...).

that's what bothers me, though. i had my animals before we got together. he knew what he was getting into when he started a relationship with me. it's not like we got together, then all of the sudden i got a bunch of animals. when we were first together, he was all 'i know your animals are important to you, so they're important to me too'. if i had known it was going to come down to this, i wouldn't have begun a relationship with him in the first place.

Re: the ultimatum
^---people change. Relationships change. Constantly. Theres always a lot more understanding at the beggining of a relationship, but after a while the little things begin to grind away at you. Even if you thought they were cute at first.
And as I said, if he's choosing this to be the battle ground, I'll bet that the relationship isnt all that solid to begin with.
But as you just said, 'If I had known he was this way to begin with, I wouldn't have started the relationship to begin with.'
Okay, thats easily said. Now prove it. Now you know he's this way. So why continue the relationship? It's always hard to let the first one go, and it usually goes on a lot longer then its meant to, but you'll both be happier moving on.
EDIT: And no, he's not an asshole for wanting to move on, or for hating things that are furry and rabid.

Well, it is your choice. If you're considering a future together compromises do have to be made to live in peace together.
If he will be living there then the number of pets will have an effect on how happy he is with his living space, so in that case I don't think it's totally unreasonable.
You have some thinking to do...

Yeah, because pets last so long and are so intelligent. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather spend my time with a creature who is at least self-aware and doesn't lick its own ass. I have a cat but not four dozen like animal girl here.
I love my cat. If someone said they'd dump me unless I got rid of my cat, I'd tell 'em to fuck off. But I only have one, which is normal, I'm not running a fucking zoo in my apartment. People who have that many animals are usually unstable and have serious issues connecting with members of their own species. I've met a bunch of home-schooled Bible-banging rural nutjobs and they all loved animals more than normal people, and most of them were taken advantage of because they were too stupid to see it coming.
So, the point is, you should really look at yourself objectively and ask yourself why you feel the need to have so many animals, and don't just backtrack and say "Because I like animals", look for the real reason, possibly with the help of a psychiatrist. Feel free to listen to yoyobek but that'll only make it worse in the long run.

This will be an interesting story for you to tell your pets some day when you're old and single.
the dogs, that is reasonable....but the 18 or so rodents that you have....thats a bit excessive...I just don't see the point in having that many...
I'd just recommend you start looking for some good caring homes for some of the vermin now, and maybe slowly thin the herds....

the only animals that i actually want to get rid of are the rabbits... i didn't want them in the first place, and because i don't really like them that much, i feel like i'm not taking as good care of them as i should be. i posted an ad on craigslist a few weeks ago, but the only responses i got were from kids, and i'm not just going to give them to the first person that wants them; i'm going to make sure they find a good home. my boyfriend doesn't think that's neccesary, he (only half-jokingly) told me i should just let them go in the woods.
as for one of my dogs, i wouldn't mind getting rid of the younger one if i was absolutely positive that he was going to an amazing home. he has too much energy for my 12 year old dog, and he chews on everything. he is really sweet, but he's a lot to handle; which is why i wouldn't mind giving him to someone who could give him lots of attention and who has other dogs for him to play with.
the rats are just fucking cool. there's no way i'm getting rid of them. same for most of the guinea pigs. there's maybe 2 or 3 that i wouldn't mind getting rid of, once again, though, only to a great home, but i'd feel bad about splitting them up.

Re: the ultimatum
My girlfriend has a little maltese that she seems to think is a human being. She treats that dog like a goddess. The dog sleeps on our $1700 dollar bed even though she'll occasionally shit and piss on it.
My girlfriend says "well, it's not her fault, it's my fault because I didn't take her out in time."
Booooy, let me tell you. I had a dog when we first got together and she made me get rid of him because he pooped too much.
She baby talks to this dog all the time and it's rather annoying. I think she needs some help. The dogs' name is Mia and she even has another name she'll sometimes call her. Puffin. She calls her dog Mia and Puffin.
The dog is so spoiled. It knows no rules. Everyone in her family is in love with that dog. I hate it because she honestly gets more attention than me.
My girlfriend is on vaction in Florida right now and I bet she misses her dog more than she does me.

Re: the ultimatum
What kind of disgusting person would dump you because of pets? Even if you don't like them, that's a small price to pay for the happiness of someone you love. I wouldn't dump my girlfriend even if she had ten thousand rodents.

My girlfriend is on vaction in Florida right now and I bet she misses her dog more than she does me.
yea, my animals aren't like that. my 12 year old dog can go anywhere she wants in the house because she's trained, and well, she's 12. the only time she ever pissed or shit on the bed was the first night we got her, which was when she was a puppy. my other dog, on the other hand, isn't even allowed upstairs, and he can't even be by himself downstairs because he chews on everything.
all of the rodents stay in cages, it's not like they're crawling all over him whenever he comes over.

Re: the ultimatum
So let me get this straight.
Your boyfriend wants you to get rid of two rabbits, which you don't like, a dog [which you also wouldn't mind getting rid of], and some of your guinea pigs [who you didn't plan on having in the first place]. You have very little money, yet you have an exorbitant amount of pets. You have almost certainly complained to him about these things.
Seems to me that he's not THAT wrong. It's a dickhead move, maybe, but from what you yourself have said it's not that unreasonable.

Re: the ultimatum
i honestly wouldnt want to deal with a lot of pets because i wouldnt be able to care enough to keep them fed and happy.. basically id be a bad pet owner for more than just one animal.. other than that talking about a relationship it would kind of suck because it would hinder our ability to do whatever the fuck we wanted.. wed have to plan in advance.. also theres the fact that it would eat up alot of money.. i donno about all this but if i loved you enough.. i would probably suggest you gave up some of the pets anyhow.. why not be a vet or something or work somewhere that you can enjoy your love for animals? id just kindof think its not so good to have all up in a relationship.. but you probably wouldnt want a guy like me for those reasons.. but it seems you did.. i like being free and having to be thinking about the needs of a bunch of pets all day would kill me.. just my take and sorry if its not agreeable.

Re: the ultimatum
You kind of sound like an idiot. You "kinda wouldn't mind" getting rid of some of your pets, yet you get mad at your boyfriend for telling you to get rid of them. Now don't get me wrong, your boyfriend is a fucking twat and you should dump his ass and then make all your animals shit/piss on him simultaneously, but still. Get rid of your pets if you don't want them and get rid of the boyfriend, whether you want to or not.
If my boyfriend ever even suggested choosing between him and my puppy he'd be soooo dumped. Luckily, the dog loves the boyfriend more than he loves me, and the boyfriend thinks puppy is awesome, so no worries for me.

I tend to be of the opinion that anyone who sets an ultimatum can go fuck themselves hard with a fucking chainsaw.
So, hmm. I... think you should... not...do what he says. Because he's a fucking cunt.
Although I'm sure he's a nice guy!

And chances are, the relationship probably isnt all that great in the first place if it comes down to this.
However, you dont have the right to kick anyones ass just because they dont love the cuddly little shitbags like you do. So sit down, smoke a few bowls, and kindly shut the fuck up.

Re: the ultimatum
*Doesnt read the replies*
Your boyfriend is a dickhead. Give him an ultimatum: stop being a dick before next semester, or I'll dump you.
That said, you evidently ARE obsessed with animals, but thats not nescessarily a bad thing. I'd say it makes you far more amusing than a lot of people out there who arent obsesswed with anything, and thus live day by day with nothing interesting to say or do.
there are so many reasons that you should dump him, past the obvious, but given I saw a load of yoyobek posts while scrolling down, I presume they've all been covered.

like i said before, i don't have a problem getting rid of the dog and the rabbits, but only if i can find them proper homes. he wants me to just drop the rabbits and guinea pigs off at petco and the dog off at the pound. and i do want to keep my guinea pigs, regardless of whether or not i planned to have that many.
i have never complained to him about any of my animals, because even though they can be a pain, i care about them and they're my responsibility.

no, i'm mad because he's forcing me to choose between my animals (which he knows are important to me) and him.
if it was just the bunnies and the dog, i wouldn't have a problem with it, because the dog needs a home where he'll get more attention and the bunnies need one with people that actually like them. but the fact that he's trying to make me give up the animals that he knows i care about is what's making me mad.

Re: the ultimatum
First of all, you said you were thinking of joining a sorority. What the fuck are you thinking? Do you really think they're going to let all those animals. Also, you said you were living at HIS dorm 3 nights of the week. Where do your pets go then? If they dont goto his dorm then you're a bad pet owner, and if they do goto his dorm, then I see why he wants you to get rid of them. I bet he spends alot of money on you, and you didn't meantion it. Besides you love your animals but you dont trust your mom? What kind of a person are you?
P.S. Yoyobek is a bitch, and I would love to knock her teeth out.

You sound like you should be in Scooby Doo "I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those pesky animals..."
But yea, I agree. He sounds like a cock.
He's got no right telling you you have to get rid of your animals. And I highly doubt you'll be together forever, you're only in college. Don't give up your animals for some spastic who's just trying to control you and will probably finish with you, or at least constantly use it as an excuse, whenever you're not doing exactly what he says and wants.
quote:
1 - What the fuck? He knows better than you do when you have an orgasm? I don't think so.
2 - "You don't need friends" Psycho0o0o...
3 - He's clingy. He's controlling. He's a moron. You can't even get a job, love. Seriously, it's not good for you. you're wasting your time when you could find someone so much better and who's a good guy and won't try and control you like that.
How old are you?

what do my animals have to do with the sorority? [i]I'm[/] the one that was thinking about joining, not my animals.
My pets stay at my house when I'm in his dorm, where the fuck else would they go? How am I a bad pet owner because I don't drag them to his dorm and back to my house 10 times a week?
And yes, I do love my animals, and no, I don't trust my mom. How are those two related? My animals provide me with unconditional love, my mom lies and steals money from me.
And he doesn't spend any more money on me than I spend on him. If i added it up, I probably spend more on him than he does on me.

Tell him to GFO.
You pets, my pets, anyones pets are their buddies and pals. Mine is sitting right at my feet as I type. I wouldn't give up my three pets for ANYONE.
Pets don't judge and when you've come home from a shitty day, your pets are there to greet you and there job is to bring a smile on your face EVERY time you come home. Your boyfriend can't do that.
Maybe he feels threatened by your pets. You need to find a boyfriend who shares your same interest, PETS.

actually, they don't. at my school, only one frat has a house, and none of the sororities do.
