Default The illusion of a perfect relationship = as good as one?

I've never been cheated on. But I know people who have. I also see people on this forum. Sometimes people say if the cheating was a once off thing, don't tell them. It'd be unfair.

Also there are people who just wish they never found out they were being cheated on. For them, ignorance is bliss.

I have a friend and his girlfriend has OBVIOUSLY cheated on him. People tell him, his BEST FRIENDS tell him, and she shrugs it off, says "nah man" and continues with life.

Is the illusion of a perfect relationship just as good as a perfect one? Is paranoia just a useless emotion?

I'm not sure if this is making sense..

I'd say it all depends on what you want out of a relationship. If you're at a point in your life where you're pretty busy and don't have as much time to put into a relationship as you'd like, and you're pretty sure that your relationship is going nowhere in the long run, then....I wouldnt want to know if the girl was cheating on me, it'd just piss me off and I'd end it....in that situation I'd rather just live the illusion of a good relationship.

But if I was looking for a serious, long term, committed relationship, I'd rather know if the bitch was cheating...so I could choke her out.

I don't think you could even maintain the illusion of a perfect relationship if one person was cheating. There's something between two people who are both completely happy with each other that just can't be faked. If one partner was cheating, they obviously wouldn't have that. Your friend only thinks he has the perfect relationship through denial and delusion.

Which is pretty much like saying "if all the sex you'd ever had was virtual and you'd never done it with a real woman, would you feel pissed off about it?". There's nothing wrong in your mind as long as you don't know the truth, but there's something about none of it being real that's unsettling. You wouldn't want to be in a perfect illusion yourself.

I'm no closer to answering the question, though. Hmmmm.

If youre ok with living life blind to what is going on around you, then yes the illusion is just as good as the real thing.

But if you value clarity and knowing what is truly happening in the world around you, the illusion of a perfect relationship will never be enough for you.

Pretending that everything in a relationship is fine and wonderfull is the same as playing with barbie dolls as a kid and pretending you're a princess and an amazing prince is going to come and save you and you'll both fly away on a beatifull flying pony..

I'm sure they're both very nice thoughts, but cold hard reality is just sitting there to smack you in the face.

No flying ponies. And yes, your boyfriend really is cheating on you, and no this isnt going to go away.

I wouldnt bother pretending. If my current boyfriend cheated I'd end it simply because I'd rather be on my own than unhappy.

Ignorance is bliss.

You could be just as happy in a complete delusion as the real thing.

Problem is that delusions tend to get shattered, and that can potentially be worse than actually acknowledging the problem in the first place.

I suppose it's a personal thing. Would the happiness you had experienced outweigh the pain when it finally ended? I think I'd rather know what was going on, under most circumstances.

You've obviously never seen the Simpsons episode where Skinner serves Chalmers burgers from Krusty Burger.

He knows. Sometimes it's easier to lie to yourself, rather than face the truth. He can't possibly be that fucking stupid. He just doesn't want it to be true.

I hate when people say "ignorance is bliss." Ignorance is like living in a cave with a cork shoved up your ass insisting you don't have to take a shit. Bliss is when you're completely aware of what's going on, yet you don't let the negatives of it effect you. Nirvana, you could say.

But ignorance is bliss. There's no denying it.

Ignorance is indeed bliss, but anyone who willingly cheats on someone deserves to be shot in the face several times. There's just plain no need of it.

If you are lucky enough to be in a relationship, why cheat? If you dont want to be in the relationship just leave, instead of cheating.

I couldnt even imagine cheating on my girlfriend. What the hell is wrong with people?

As opposed to...tripping, falling, and landing on his penis?

Who really cares? Either youre happy in an illusion or happy without it. People seek happiness. Illusions tend to get shattered. Truth is rarely happy.

And just shrugging off the baddies is a hard thing to do by anybody. Its totally another thing to srug off AIDs cause you know you will die, but its harder to shrug off something like an illusion of love, because there are so many fucking possibilites to it, she just chooses the truth that suits her best.
