What's the best thing your parents taught you?
I'm curious.
What are you most grateful to your parents/parent for teaching you?
How has it made a positive impact on your adult life?
Did you think it would at the time?
I think this belongs in S&A. Parenting/relationships? Feel free to chuck it wherever you fancy if it doesn't.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
That money was not more important than us.
How to balance my checkbook and make a budget plan.
That many things can be reused. (for instance, mom would wash aluminum foil to be reused later.)
To watch my use of language, especially curse words. (I only heard my dad swear once in my life. I suspect he swore more around the boys. Although, I did hear my mom swear...she was going through some rough times back then.)
To shop around for the best value you can find.
That keeping a car until it has to be replaced is a wise move.
Don't trust what boys tell you. (my dad)
That patience is a virtue and kindness is not wasted.
They taught me nothing about sex, except not to do it until you're married. (I didn't listen to that, but it's not bad advice.)
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
Not sure off the top of my head, I'll have to think about that one.
However some of the lessons I have tried to instill in my sons are:

.Always with a weapon and always from behind. There is no such thing as a 'fair' or 'manly' fight. Armed combat always beats unarmed.

Always use a condom, no matter if she says she is on the pill or not.

Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead. Without informants the police couldn't catch Jesse James if he was still doing trains on horse back. NEVER EVER tell anyone if you are going to commit a crime. Especially not your g/f, wife or best mates. (actually in this day of DNA testing this isn't quite true anymore but still most of men I know who are in or were in prison are in there because they thought they could trust ...)

Its is better to face a jury of 12 of your enemies than have six of your friends carry your coffin.

Never commit a crime or start a business with a man who has a drink or drugs problem or if you know he is cheating on his wife(if he is prepared to break that vow then you just can't trust him)

in crime and sex, never shit on your own doorstep.

don't be afraid of the man with scars, be afraid of the man who gave him the scars. The really dangerous ones are the quiet ones, the stone-colds.

Oh Jesus it sounds like I'm some kinda modern day Fagin....

You know, I hear that they have a recycling system where the wash water can be reused for the toilets now. Great idea, imo.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
inadvertant lessons were often and varied.
lets just say that thanks to my parents interests, I had read the kama sutra by 14 and men are from mars/women are from venus by 16, in addition to a whole library on the history of sex in literature, art, music, etc from all over the world.
and sure enough, that education helped. first time with a girl, bam! seven orgasms- hers, not mine.

I know, it is funny to think about today. We discard so many things. She still does stuff like that, and it drives my dad crazy. Washing plastic spoons and forks that people usually throw away. Taking home containers from fast food places and washing them to reuse sometime in the future.
Yeah...I think...it's weird...and comical...but, it's sweet too. That's my mom.

That there is no price on education.
That when the time comes, and it feels right, take a risk.
That no matter what, they will always love me.
That for the normal people a good life when your older means working hard.
That not everything is handed on a silver platter.
That blood is thicker than water.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
My mother and my father were very different people hence why i feel so lucky to have this range of advice.
When confronted dont hessitate to kick them when they are down . There is no such thing as a fair fight. The only thing remembered is how viciously you attacked him. Fight hard Fight less. - my dad
Life is emotional all the time dont be afraid to feel desensitized sometimes. There is only so much crying you can do - my mum
Money cant buy you love - The beatles and my dad.
Just live to be happy because at the end of the day you are the one that has to put up with yourself. - my dad
Never completely trust girls they are far cleverer than you son. - My mum
These are all serious quotes (well as close as i can remember) I feel glad that i have had the parents i have had despite the fact that my father is half the world away now (literally) for the rest of my life

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
Don't get married before I'm 30!
All my friends are having babies, getting married, divorced, remarried, getting engaged, breaking off engagements.
It's completely ridiculous.
Twenties are way too young these days to get married. Maybe 50 years ago it was alright, but that was because adolesence wasn't as long. Now people aren't really becoming adult until after 25. Financial dependency on parents, living with them is becoming more common among older and older "kids". (This isn't just shit I'm pulling out of my ass, this is something that's accepted among the psychological community).
Anyway, I think we're mentally way to young a generation to be having kids when we're kids ourselves. It's just wrong.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
The most important lessons were taught indirectly. Like when I was like 8 and got a swiss army knife and proceded to cut thee tip of my finger off. Or the time I got a pellet gun, and got hit by a ricoche(I can't be arsed to look it up). Even the time I was allowed to run around the campfire, and ended up falling in. None of those ever happened more than once, and there are many more, probably better, examples, but I can't think of them.
As for actuall advice, "jim, don't have sex with an ugly chick, I don't want ugly grandkids", and "Use a condom" come to mind.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
I remember hearing a story from one of my friends of something his dad taught him.
"Theres a dog walking accross the train track and he gets the end of his tail caught between the rails. He tries to pull it out but its stuck. The dog hears and train coming and is now frantically scratching at and biting his tail to get free. It doesn't work and as he tries to bite his tail free the train comes and knocks his head right off.
Moral of the story: never loose your head over a little piece of tail."

I am going to sound like a bitter ungreatful spoiled teen...but I can't think of much they've taught me. I can think of alot I haven't been taught that I'm having to learn now, living by myself at age 19.
I'm racking my brains, honestly. My mother taught me that drinking and drug addiction was bad, but she did that through example.
I've got nothing. I'll repost later.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
I forgot to post my own!
My mother taught me how to deal with money. Legally or otherwise.
She also taught me that I'm always wrong. Sounds harsh, but it's damn true.
My father taught me, by example, how not to deal with money. Also, how not to deal with alcohol.
I think the best thing he taught me though, indirectly, was how not to grow up to be like my mother.

When you walk with a woman, walk on the outside of the pavement, to protect her from oncoming traffic.
Do onto others as you'd do onto yourself.
If someone is constantly bothering you, there's only so much you should have to turn the cheek, kick the shit out of them when necessary. That was kind of my dad's thinking, one time I went for some guy who I had had quite enough of and my mum was quite dissapointed.
My mum's latest one: A girl that takes her time is a lot better than the one that just jumps into bed with you.

Unless you've really put that into practice, by turning down a proposal, or deciding to wait on proposing, or something, I can't realy see that it's that valuable a piece of advice.
I mean, it's probably a good idea not to get married at 21, but fuck, does anyone ever do that because they actually think "Oh, this is a wise step in my long-term life plan."? No.

LMFAO!! Sounds about right, I've heard so many bad things about the cops in the area.
jackketch, if you dont mind me asking, are you in England or Norfolk VA?
Things my Adoptive Father taught me:
--The Democrats! Are the enemy!
--The United States, must always be able to stand up upon its own feet.
(basically a few ideas I merged into my own conservative beliefs)
Things my Step Dad taught me:
--The Democrats are the enemy because! [reasons]
--Mineralogy, and how to get rich using it
--How to break trespassing laws and get off
Things my Mom taught me
--The Democrats, aren't really the enemy (she was more politically balanced)
--Religion
--How to be on time (by her being always being late)
--How to think rationally
On a completely random note: Since we have a few Virginians in S&A, or so admitting on this thread, anyone up for a Norfolk/Virginia Beach meet up?

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
Things my mom taught me:
-Pride goeth before the fall. Being proud of yourself and your accomplishments is a good thing, but an excess of pride is a bad thing. It takes a bigger person to admit you're feeling down, to admit you were wrong, or to ask for help when you're in need, than to shove it aside, give in to pride, and be dishonest with yourself and others.
-If you get the chance to experience something new and exciting, go for it. Life is meant to be enjoyed, so you shouldn't always play it safe and go through life as if it's just a big conveyor belt.
-Try not to burn your bridges if you can avoid it. You may regret it later on, especially if you're in need.
Things my dad taught me:
-No matter how old you are, it's never too late to learn and improve yourself. You shouldn't be too set in your ways because your life can change in a second and you have to be able to adapt and improve to fit the situation you find yourself in.
-Be careful with your money, because going into debt and filing for bankruptcy are not fun things. (That one he taught me by example.)

"Lifes a bitch and then you die".
"Just headbutt them in the fucking nose".
"Be good and if you aren't don't do anything I wouldn't do"
Ok maybe my mom was a biker chick but still.

No.
In sickness and in health... till death do us part..
That's the problems with young adults, they don't think ahead, at all. That's why I'm going to graduate school and all my friends are doing the same shit they were doing in high school.
I do think ahead, and so far, my life has kicked ass. That's more than what all the 21 year old mommies and and people stuck in minimum wage dead end jobs.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
When I was very young (This is one of my earliest memories), my father took me aside, put his hand on my shoulder, and imparted on me some wisdom that I remember and cherish to this day. He said, "Son, I know I haven't always been around, and that sometimes you feel like it's just you and your mother. But remember this: Weebles may wobble, but they don't fall down." Think about it, there's a lot of truth to that statement.

My father taught me : IF you think theres gonna be trouble, that pistol is your best friend and fat girls are like scooters, they're fun to ride until your mates catch you on one.
My Mother taught me : Remember, all those girls you shagged, they talk.
My brother taught me : Don't do anything i wouldn't and you'll be fine.

Reminds me of an old story. SHeriff stops a guy who has got a fuck-off-and-die hogleg of a handgun strapped to his thigh. Sheriff asks the guy 'why d'ya bring the gun, you expecting trouble?'. The guy replies "No Sir, if I was expecting trouble then I'd have brought a rifle".

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
They inadvertently taught me not to meet someone I don't really love and have kids with them, and then get thousands of dollars in debt and waste most of my life working 9-5 to support a family I probably wish I'd never had.
Yeah.

Re: What's the best thing your parents taught you?
wow this isn't a topic i expected to see here, but for some reason i'm compelled to search for some examples of my own.
My Mother
-money isn't real, its just a collection of data at your local bank. [some truth to that]
-you may say/do things in your teens/20's that you will either end up doing or not doing [ie: never living here or doing this job]
-without an education life is hard.
-how to survive in the ghetto
-equality. do not judge someone by things they did not pick themselves
-pain is a way of seeing how badly you want to go on [true fact]
-how to make my favorite food to this [take too long soup]
-marlboro's [ironicly we both smoke em]
My Father
-the ability to manage money, gain credit, and keep things "in budget"
-how not to treat your girlfriend.
-drugs are neither good nor bad, they are neither an excuse for ones actions [or lack of]
-that its okay to fall back on your parents [happened a few times in my case], and that even at 40 you'll be still appeasing them.
-you can't chose your stance before you hear the issue
-education is a life long thing, and not limited to just proper schooling
-that its okay to sit back and take everything in.
-take pride in yourself regardless of what you have accomplished, or do.
one thing i can remember from when i was little, is my grandmother telling me all the bad things come from New Jersery .

Amen.
I guess i learned from my parents that i was an accident, and i was unwanted and was only around because someone was to scared to get an abortion.
Plus, not to scream out to stop when my dad decided to hit me with a baseball bat because that just made him hit me more harder.
