Default Ladies: would you date a guy who lived with his parents?

For the purpose of this discussion, the guy in question is 20 years old, moderately attractive, and has a job.

A girl once told me that if a guy is still living at home once he's out of his teens then he'd better be studying...

The parents are cool. They would let that person get drink alcohol in their house.

They live in a room in the garage, so it's kind of like a basement, in which the room isn't really connected to the rest of the house.

Hah, I just posted in your SG thread...

I am dating a guy who lives with his parents. But he's in university.

You work in a deli and place more importance in having a car and a tv than being respectable and not living in a garage. How do you live in a garage? Isn't it freaking cold, and wet, and concrete-y? Not to mention the cars, and the tools, and toxic substances that can't be kept inside... or am I completely misinterpreting "garage?"

yes. It's a room that was built inside the actual garage.

I'm actually being trained for management at my current job. (I actually work for Safeway...) I can become a store manager in as little as 3-4 years. That means ~$90k/year salary

When I was in college, I had no idea what I wanted to do anyways.

Interesting. I worked at the deli at safeway once. For like, 2 weeks. When I was... 15?

If you wanna be a safeway manager for the rest of your life... good luck with that man. FREE MEAT.

I'm not shitting you. They pay store managers ridiculous amounts of money. It's a huge amount of stress, though.

Oh you said safeway and not subway. I've never heard of safeway before today so that's how I read it.

Anyway I'm a judgemental prick and I've got to stop. If you enjoy managing a supermarket then why the hell not. Move out when you become managment? you'll surely have enough money.

I didn't say cashier. I said store manager. Store manager for the largest supermarket chain in the country. $60k a year is not bad at all. I call that a decent trade.

Short answer: Unless he was going to school full time, no I would not date a guy that lived at home. That just tells me he refuses to be an adult and has no ambition. Which means I will be the one who will end up having to work her ass off to pay the bills while he is still working his 10.00 and hour job five years down the road.

At least get into school and stop with the bullshit that you can't afford it. Most of the students going can't afford it, so they either got grants or government loans. You don't have to go to some University either. Go to a community college or some technical school. Talk to your parents and figure out what you want to do for at least the next ten years of your life (no one said you had to stick to a certain career or job forever). Either way, at this moment you don't look like a great option for a quality female. That and who wants to get stoned and fuck over at their boyfriend's parents house?

just like i'm a full time student living at home, if a guy was in the same studying situation i'd expect him to be living that way. it's very very expensive to move out especially if you're not eligible for any money from the government because apparently your parents earn too much(i'm in australia) .

i'd definitely prefer for a guy to be out of home, just for the privacy aspect. however, it wouldn't stop me from dating a guy if he was living at home as long as he was younger than say, 24.

now, if he's not studying it's a different story. i hate it when a guy is too dependent on his parents when he's at an age where he shouldn't be depending on them for anything.

i'm particularly independent in terms of what my parents provide for me, so it makes a guy seem really young in my mind if his mother still does stuff like cleans his room.

21, at house with parents, one full time job, one part time job, and University.

Lucky girls have that 'studying' clause or I'd be a loser right?

Oh well it'll all be sweet when I own my own house in a few months.

That study clause means that you are working towards a stable future and that you are not impulsive. That's our version of the shaved pussy.

I'm not in school because there just aren't any programs around here that interest me enough. I tried going to school, I honestly did. I like what I'm doing now, I like dealing with people, and 5 years down the road I'll be making more money than you did with your associate's degree in whatever the hell you were putting yourself in debt to study for.

I think the reason I'm getting such hostile responses is, most of you guys are just pissed at yourselves for moving out too early, and now you live in a shitty apartment with a bunch of people and you can't afford hardly anything.

^ You asked the girls for an answer and I just gave you one. Since you live at home it sounds like you have more excuses than reasons to get off your ass and make something of yourself. No I would never date anyone that lived at home (unless they were going to school FULL time). You don't have to like the answer but that is it. If you had a girlfriend, or at least a hot girlfriend that you wanted to show off to your friends, you wouldn't be asking us this question.

But I guess you wanted the answer to be "Yes we would date you and your cartoon car that is not an investment in anything at all! Who cares if you are doomed to a salary cap at 30,000 a year for the next twenty years! As long as you bought that concept car that is devalued the moment it left the lot and you refuse to budge from your comfort zone you are the man for me!"

Well I was being a bit harsh, sorry. But you are hearing from girls and boys that say this isn't the way to go. Just apply for FAFSA at your nearest college and start with your basics. That way you can spend the next two years trying to figure out what you really want to do and then you just have to go another year or two. Even if you are working and going part time, only taking two or three classes a semester, that is better than nothing.

Oh, and there are some pretty hot girls at college.

I think everyone is being too harsh. 20 is still really young; don't sweat it. If you enjoy your job, go for it, but like everyone else said, going to school a little more might be worth your while.

it's actually a base pay of $60k/year. My manager gets paid $90k/year after being a manager for ~5-6 years. That's not even including bonuses of $5-10k/year

I wanted to take business classes in school anyways, but I'm just learning at the workplace what I would have learned at school. While I'm being paid to be there.

You might want to get at least an Associates in Business Management. This will look way better as you are advancing and it gives you more leverage when discussing salary. Don't totally bank on that particular job being avaiable for you at that particular salary either. I am sure Safeway will be around for a very long time, but they are competing with the WalMarts and Sam's Clubs out there, so that means they might have to start making cuts here and there. Worse case scenerio with getting a degree is that you never use it. Best case, it gets you into a higher pay bracket and it is something to build on when you decide to start a new line of work.

yeah, that seems like a good route to take, just to be safe. I don't even want to be working at Safeway for much longer, just long enough to learn everything that I can and then move on to something better or start my own business.

edit: meh, my ex girlfriend didn't have a problem with me living with my parents.

First of all...why do you give a fuck how people value your life?

Second of all, where you're living says alot. Out here in New York City and Long Island, and also in L.A. the cost of living is highest in the country. Everyone lives at home into their 20's; it's too expensive and stupid not to. Stay home, save that cheddar, and do what you gotta do.

and thirdly, that car is fuckin ugly bro.

You guys have bought the college BS and cultural norm of moving out far far too much.

Less than 40% of the "datable" fucks in college who live at home (or at their own place) don’t finish the degree.(btw, I am one of the shmoe’s in college, although I lead a lifestyle conducive to working full time as well as going to school[Culinary arts degree])

It’s much better to work your way up instead of wasting time in school that you won’t finish. The numbers are very highly inflated as to what college will earn you. The real numbers show that college grads make less than someone who worked for those 2-4 years.

It all has to do with whether you are just working, or if you are working to advance yourself further. The reason there are old ppl working somewhere still making shit is because they lack the drive for advancement (or there are other outside conditions that make that job suitable for them.)

Just about everywhere BUT the U.S. it’s expected to live with your parents, at least for a time. It’s seen as good character to live with them, and then transition to them living with you. You take are of them in old age as they took care of you in youth.

It all comes down to if you let yourself stagnate, or if you advance.

I will be 18, and in a private college 800 miles from my damn house.

Senior in high school, and my mom teaches at a private college, so there is a huge list i can goto for almost nothing.

So i chose to goto a college by my uncle in MI. (in the town of Adrian).

I will be able to do whatever the fuck i want when i want.

Boy you got no idea how bad i want to get the hell out.

I can understand how some of you may have wanted to move out for different reasons, but the way I have it here, it's not so bad. It's almost like I'm just renting a room from someone that isn't even my family. I pretty much come and go when I choose, and they let me do whatever I want.

I've come to realize something over the course of this thread: If people choose to move out as soon as they can and live paycheck to paycheck, then that's ok. If someone wants to live with their parents and save some money until they can really afford to move out on their own, that's ok too. Hell, I have a plan to do something with my life. It may not be your ideal plan, but it works for me. Fuck what anyone else thinks.

But... you're spending money on a stupid car instead of saving it so you can leave. Try and justify that. "Because I wanted it" and "the chicks dig it" (it's a NEW GTO, they don't, an old one would be sweet) are not valid answers.

Even if I weren't paying for a car, I could barely afford to live on my own anyways.

Oh, and I bought it "because I could" and "because the chicks really do dig it"
