Default Conversation Starters

I'm interested. You're a varied bunch, I want to know what you all reckon are interesting/effective/engaging conversation starters.

I'm not thinking of the "If I said you had a nice body... would you hold it against me?" sort of thing. That's a chat up line. There's a difference.

So come on, hit me.

Depends on the girl, and what you are after....

I find just saying "Hi" works a treat...

Giving them a reverse compliment sometimes works too. Something like "I realy like those nail - are they fake?..Oh, they are? They are nice though.." If you can say something they aren't expecting, and actually make them think, that can generally get you into a conversation.

Dumb-arse pickup lines can work too - so long as you make a joke out of them.

You just need to be funny, confident, and carry through with the charade, and you'll at least get a chat.

And it's even better if you have the attitude of not giving a shit - you'll be calmer, and have a better chance of piquing her interest.

Or you could just sit there licking your eyebrows - that would work too.....

try going up to someone and saying, hey, you look [whatever emotion they look like they are feeling].

then say something like, anything I can do?

or offer them a joint or something.

it's not that hard.

Ok...

Either you misunderstood, or you didn't actually read the original post.

I don't have confidence issues. I'm actually pretty kickass. If I'd wanted your David DeAngelo hand-me-down bullshit I would have made up some shit about stuttering when I talk to girls. And more to the point, I'm not even specifically talking about starting conversations with girls. Just conversation in general. This being S&A, the end goal of any conversation is obviously linked in some way to a sexual liaison, but don't get caught up trying to give me girl advice (I don't need it).

whatever.

Come on, you can do better than this.

*MENTAL NOTE - They didn't answer it in the first place. Asshat.

It's frustrating but I guess I'd be expecting too much if I thought I'd get more than one or two serious replies.

How was mine not serious?

Yes, a couple that I mentioned are also mentioned by David Deangelo - but they work for me. I thought thats what you wanted when you asked:

"I'm interested. You're a varied bunch, I want to know what you all reckon are interesting/effective/engaging conversation starters."

They are the ones that work for me. Don't ask a question if you are going to flame serious posters.

If you're going to get all scientific, at least get your facts straight. The moon meat mine isnt actually on the moon. It's underground, beneath the streets of hollywood. Thats why they built the city there, so noone would find it.

How can people answer that question effectively? It depends on who you are, where you are, your impression of the person.

Most of the conversations I have with people are while I'm either waiting along with them and we're bored, to which either person will start a conversation about something related to that. Or someone might ask me a question about something I might be doing, usually something related to a course I am taking...or work.

Unless I know someone, I do not get into intimate or deep conversations. I always try to keep it on the light side.

What I wanted were conversation starters.

For example: "Are you with the Bride or the Groom" (at a party, not a wedding)

or

"Think of a number between one and ten".

Bad examples maybe, but you get the point.

I appreciate that yours was a serious post. I guess I'm just in denial due to the untimely deterioration and death of my thread.

Meh - It happens to the best of us. I've started some threads that I was positive were going to go on for at least 5 pages. And only got a couple of responses.

Back to your original question - it is pretty open ended, so your responses were always going to be all over the place.

It isn't hard.

Maybe I should have specified this, but it is to be assumed you don't know the other person from previous conversations, by virtue of the fact that you don't have any common ground and need to break the ice with.... a conversation starter.

Like, say you were at a party, and you see someone you don't know (for the sake of S&A, assume it's someone of the opposite sex, or of the same sex if you're gay). You walk over to them. What do you say? (besides "hi...roflgiggles")

And I suppose I could have worded my original post differently... Never Mind. I just thought it would be interesting to see what people here could think of, because I googled it and got a load of shite.

I want other people's opinions. This is a message board... discussion forum, whatever. That's the point, isn't it?

Discussion is two-way, not just collecting opinions. I gave you my opinion on your topic.

Conversations [with me] begin spontaneously and usually involve a comment on a common situation. So it depends on who you are, where you are, your impressions of the person, etc.

Say, waiting in line at a grocery store. I might ask someone about something they have in their cart.

I don't do "canned conversations".

I don't think it's necessarily a lame idea. I just think it's difficult to answer with specific information.

But that's just me. Plus, I'm not a big talker anyway unless I know people well.

No - it wasn't a lame idea. It just went off on a weird slant.
