Default Am I right in feeling this way, or am I overreacting?

Alright, last night, my girlfriend calls from work on her break as she normally does, and tells me she might be going to hang out with her friend, who I'll refer to as Mr. X. Now, Mr. X supposedly has been a friend of hers since childhood, he is a white male, I believe around 18-19. From what she's told me of him, it sounds like he has no other friends.

Now, they tend to hang out quite a bit, going to movies and such. I've told her that it makes me feel kind of awkward when she's spending so much time with him, especially since I'm 500 miles away, but I don't want to restrict her social life, so I let her go.

So last night, when she's about to leave from work to go home, she calls me and tells me she'll just be going home; she's not spending time with Mr. X tonight. She gets home, we talk for a while, she goes to make some dinner. Now, the time is around 11:15. She then tells me Mr. X is coming over for a little while, and she'd be back in a bit. I really don't like the idea of this, especially considering the time of day, but since she said it'd only be for a little while, I say okay. She leaves, I stay up for a bit waiting. I normally go to sleep around 1, and she knows this. So finally, she comes back at 2:15 am.

Naturally, I am very, very bothered by this. Am I right in feeling this way, or am I paranoid and over-reacting?

I'd say you're overreacting. If she was doing it to actually cheat on you, she wouldn't have told anything. I'd say you should absolutly not let it bother you.

But she didn't come back until 2:15am!

Edit: And I'm not worried about her cheating on me; I just don't like the idea of other males being around her that late at night in a situation like that. We all know why males spend time with females; I'm mainly afraid of this guy trying something on her.

Edit to my edit: Also, we don't get a lot of time to talk to each other, and we especially didn't have much time yesterday, because of her working, and the fact that she fell back asleep after I called to wake her up. And I feel that during that time of night, I should be the one talking with her.

Nah, you're overreacting. He's just a friend and sometimes when you're out with friends you overrun on timing a bit. It's no big deal.

EDIT: Males are perfectly capable of being platonic friends with girls. Really.

Lock her in a secret room, hidden from the rest of the world. Then you can always know where she is and what she is doing. She'll thank you later.

Alright, if I am paranoid about this, how do I fix myself? One of the psychs I went to a long time ago said I had problems with paranoia, but I stopped going to him, and went to a different one, who had a completely different dx and ddx. Is there anything I can do myself to stop myself from feeling this way?

Not aslong as you don't like him being with your girlfriend, which probably won't change. But atleast act like it doesn't bother you and stay busy.

Realize that other guys might hang around her, but at the end of the day you're the one fucking her.

Find something to busy yourself.

It's just part of your relationship at the moment, simply not something you can avoid.

You should have more in your life than just the relationship.

There's no such thing as too much effort, but. If it's not appreciated or reciprocated in any way, then you probably shouldn't take the time.

It's difficult with looming plans to move, you see that there is a lot that will change in your life. This is all contingent upon her, rather than yourself; it's a difficult leap of faith. You simply have to have confidence that you love one another, rather than focusing on the distance and lack of communication.

At this time, I don't. I have no friends outside of the internet, no job until I move, no hobbies anymore, nothing. I try to make friends, but nobody will have me. I try to indulge in hobbies, but people get pissed off at me.

You need to find something to take up your time. I know that few things are as compelling as a woman that you love, but you need to find something. There are lots of possible hobbies out there.

What sort of hobby is interesting you?

I used to be really heavy in shooting, off-roading with quads, trucks, and ATV's, drugs, alcohol, and fire training. I had to give up drugs because of the relationship, but I guess I can still shoot my guns for another month.

All right, throw yourself into guns and other things that go bang for a while.

Although, I'd suggest trying to find a hobby that you can continue with after you move.

That was sarcasm.

Edit: All the stuff I'm interested in, I can't do in the city. Plus, when I move, most of my life is going to revolve around work and the relationship.

I know, so was mine.

Take up a hobby or three that you can do in the city. It's good advice; remember, you aren't going to be just visiting.

But anyways, I figured I'd post in your thread... We're gonna figure things out, and I'm going to be with you until we do. I promise.

I didn't do this for a relationship, but about seven years ago I just up and moved to Seattle, only know a few friends I had met online. Basically I showed up with no job, a little money, and ready made roomates. There was a HOOOOGE adjustment to a big city and living with people I realized I didn't know very well.

It sucks for about two or three months. And then you make friends at work, you get use to the city, and you find new things to try that you never though you would like (sushi and coffee!).

Things will be okay. And you will be very proud that you built a life almost entirely on your own.

I'd be more worried about that "until" part rather than a childhood friend. "Until" means a foreseeable ending in the near future. Also, don't even think about wasting your time on jealousy of a childhood friend. That dude has some real history with her. If anything were to happen, it is something that has been waiting to happen before you even knew she existed.

It's harsh, but thats just the way life is. If anything were to actually come out of this, which I doubt because you are being paranoid about it, it would be for the better of both you and her.

Long distance relationships... you should have already prepared yourself for events such as this the minute you entered this relationship.

dude, i know exactly what you mean. my gf is about 350 miles from me, and we, too, don't get much time together. i'm alsowith you on that part about not going out much and having a big part of my life revolve around a disance relationship.

i think you have the right to be nervious. hell, i know i would be. you can still trust her, but be nervious. it's sometimes jsut the not knowing whats going on thats hard. but if you love each other, which it sounds like you do, then that can comfort you some.

feb 28th, huh? the 29th (so i guess march 1st) will be a year for me. congrats man!

There isn't a "foreseeable" end to the relationship, but we're both open to the fact that it might not work out, ya know? And I say that because we've both tried to end the relationship under stress and all that, but neither of us want that. It's complicated... our relationship is NOT simple. But I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world.
