Default Passing out from chocolate.

No this doesn't belong here but I'm posting it here anyway cos there are a lot of people here whose opinion I respect...so live with it.

Has anyone here ever passed out/fitted/felt dizzy/had migranes from eating chocolate? If so what exactly happens/ed and what condition do you suffer from.

I ask because chocolate seems to be causing my crippled kid to have vertigo attacks/pass out/stop breathing.

He is unconscious as I type...having just had a 'Kinder Bueno'.

And if so, was it all chocolate /candy bars or only certain makes?

Strangely however some chocolates seem to effect him more than others (he had a lot of 'diary milk' yesterday without ill effect -although today's fit might be a delayed reaction I suppose).

And before anyone grizzles, he has been in and out of hospital for this. I'm looking for some personal experiences and perhaps some more 'esoteric' suggestions as to what his condition might be as the docs seem to have no idea.

Btw this all started very recently, no history of it etc etc...all came right outta the blue.

Maybe the caffeine & other stimulants in it constricted his blood vessels enough to the point where his brain didn't get enough oxygen?

shit, I dunno.

My mom is allergic to chocolate. She used to get huge migraines that would leave her stuck in bed for days, and sometimes they were triggered by chocolate. Stop giving your kid chocolate.

*ding* I'd say if it's done that to him before, and does now, cutdown on his intake of it. Can't say I've ever heard of someone passing out from, though, at least notwithout an allergy of some sort.

I get EXTREMELY bad migranes, they start at my temples and then go to my jaw. I cant eat or drink because i bring it all back up and i cant sleep... i actually have to go to the hospital and get an injection to ease them.

I dont know if the info helps but i do actually get migranes from certain chocolates, some months i can go without one single migrane and then extremely hot wheather or certain foods can just make my head go BANG. The chocolates that bring on migranes for me are : anything dark chocolate and anything chocolate with alcohol. You should check how much percentage of the chocolate is cocoa and caffeine, the lower the percentage the better. So thats probably why hes okay with some dairy milk, im pretty sure its much lower in caffiene and cocoa.

My doctor told me, with my migranes... stay away from coffee and dark chocolate.

Thanks, i'll check but I'm pretty sure some of the chocolates that seem to cause it are caffeine free....not sure about 'Bueno'...I'll check the wrapper.

Chocolate is known to release endorphins which can cause very slight euphoria and possibly enchance orgasms.

So... obviously something in the chocolate is effecting the brain. Some people could have different reactions to what is essentially beneficial to others.

Don't forget that it contains Theobromine which, along with Caffeine, is in the class of compounds called Xanthines.

I guess if it was a nut allergy, you'd all be well aware of that...what with the turning red & the screaming.

I've passed out from insanely large combined doses of drugs.

Drugs are like chocolate...in that...they're both good.

Maybe he's actually doing drugs.

Think about it.

Thank you Captain Obvious:P

Actually we kept him off chocolate for a few days and have been letting him eat some now inorder to see if it IS the trigger for these 'attacks' (for want of a better word).

I don't really like trying to induce such things but he needs to know and get his life back (at the moment he can't even attend college cos he keeps passing out).

The Neurologists aren't much help either...probably because my Urdu and Bangli suck.

Is it a form of diabetes that's undetectable?? I recall you saying something about one of your other sons being insulin dependant, not all forms are detectable by blood sugar tests alone.

I'm the opposite. I tend to collapse if I dont have some form of sugar every few hours.

It's a bitch.

'hidden' diabetes is a possiblity although I fear remote , otherwise he'd 'fit' on Caramacs/Milky Bars etc.

Yes my eldest son has to jack up several times a day on insulin

I guess you could do a test with your kid.

Write down the ingredients of each chocolate bar you give him, and see what effects each type has on him. That might sound a bit tight, but..

As I remember, the Kinder chocolate stuff tends to contain something called Soya Lecithin.

I dont know what relevance that might have, considering it helps with the digestion of fat..and fat in the liver.

Does the kid have any liver problems?

Or might do?

Thanks, but no liver probs, like I said his blood test results are all 100% ok. He is , strange as it may seem for a cripple, top fit. Athletes would kill for his BP and blood oxygenation rates.

Ahead of you on the lecithin and E467 thingy.
