I always made a note of not only remembering people's days, but also to get them a gift or at least share a few nice words with them. But I then realized that either people don't remember mine, or they just don't care.

I am probably guilty of doing the same.

Try and view birthdays not as some kind of "I must give gifts and expend effort to this person" day, but more as a just be nice and try and remember type day.

It makes me very uncomfortable when people get me large presents.

That's happened to me... but I've done it as well. Not through maliciousness, just through absent-mindedness. It might just be that.

It probably is, but if it were half and half it'd be different. 8/12 people forgot.

And it has nothing to do with gifts, that's what I'm saying. A "Happy birthday" would've been sufficient.
