Default Ladies, have any of you ever had an abortion?

Because I might have to get one.

Yes, I realize I'm an idiot, so no flaming is necessary, although you can do so if you wish.

But to my point, what can I expect? I think I'm about 4 to 6 weeks pregnant and a chemical abortion isn't an option.

Can they even perform a surgical abortion at 4 to 6 weeks? It would be with an awful vacuum like device, and I read that it's only necessary at at least 7 weeks.

They want to keep you awake during the procedure, am I right?

I'm considering an "herbal abortion", which I've done quite a bit of reading on, and frankly, I am terrified at the idea of getting my insides sucked out by a vacuum, but if it comes down to that I guess I have to be mature and deal with it.

Can anyone help me a bit?

I'm looking for actual answers to my questions, though I expect I'll get a lot of this.

It's most likely too late for an herbal abortion, deary. Those are intended to take place before the first missed period and do nothing but decrease in effectiveness after that point.

I know, but I read about a woman who successfully had an herbal abortion at 8 weeks, so all is not lost yet.

Rizzo, I plan to get this fucker out even if I have to use my bare hands.

I refuse to let a vacuum anywhere near my vagina unless absolutely necessary.

EDIT: I'm 15, and my dad won't let me go on birth control.

It's a horrifying thing to go through, no doubt, but it's my own fault so I guess I can't really say much.

I have had an abortion. This is something that I am extremely ashamed of. The father of the baby tortured me non-stop.. spread every rumor possible about me. I had no one in the world on my side. Long story short, I had the abortion. He promised to pay for it.. but he never did. It was the worst feeling in the world. That vacuum really feels like you're having the life sucked out of you..

Make absolute sure that this is something you want to, or feel you have to do.

Most likely, vacuum is going to be your option.

Thank you so much for an actual response.

That guy sounds like a fucking piece of shit, no one deserves what he did to you.

Did they keep you fully conscious during the whole procedure?

I suppose I'm lucky, my boyfriend is extremely supportive of me and says he feels awful about it (I told him he shouldn't).

I definitely don't want to do this, and I'm not sure I have to just yet, but I think it'll come down to that.

Also, another thing is that I'd have to pretend that his mother is my mother, that I was born in Massachusetts, that I was born in 1989, and all this other really sketchy shit. It gets complicated since I live in New York and he lives in MA, which is where I'd be having the abortion.

His mom would take me to get it done without my dad knowing, which I'm really not comfortable about, seeing as I look nothing like his mother and I don't have the slightest trace of the MA accent.

The whole thing just really doesn't sit well with me.

EDIT: Thank you Gus, I'm hoping that I do. That actually means something coming from you, seeing as we've "disagreed" in the past. :P

If you really want one, make sure you know what it does to you.

Not only does it take the baby's life, it could serious damage to yours.

Please read up more on the pro-life side of this situation. what abortion clinics don't tell you should scare the hell out of you.

Abortion=murder.

There are other options like adoption.

I'm 15 also and recently found out that I am pregnant with my rapist's baby. Yet I refuse to commit murder.

Please keep these things in mind.

Having the baby is not an option. I don't see abortion as murder, nor do I consider a month old fetus a human.

Those are just my views, but I will read up on the damage it could do to me.

And I have a slight idea of what you're going through as far as being pregnant goes, but I wasn't raped. I really hope all goes well for you.

I was fully conscious. Having the abortion did a lot of mental damage to me. It was very uncomfortable. Like the pap smear from hell. How old are you? I was able to get mine done confidentially. Contact your local Planned Parenthood, or 'free clinic' and they'll really help you out.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision. It's a difficult choice and you'll be a stronger person for having faced it head on.

I bet your Dad would let you go on birth control if you told him that you just had an out of state abortion under an assumed identity.

Young girls are especially liable to physical damage as a result of abortion operations. One medical expert says that girls of school age have extra risks from abortion due to the fact that they have small tightly closed cervixes which are especially liable to damage on dilatation. He says: "Evidence has accumulated steadily over the past 10 years of increased risks for these young mothers."—G. P. Russel, England, Statement made January 10, 1974.

^yeah, but having a baby at 15 is just as difficult. they aren't considered high risk for no reason. and if you cervix is tightly closed, whether you are dilating for abortion or birth, it will be difficult.

im not saying one way or another, but please do no use 'herbal abortion'...that stuff can seriously injure you and can actually kill you.

It certainly can, depending on what herbs you use.

Pennyroyal can definitely kill you, but there are safe methods, such as using parsley (induces contractions) and vitamin C.

But it's definitely not risk free.

its not like you can feel the "vacum" they stick a tube inside your vag to help stretch ya out, then they stick the sucking device through that, the only feeling you have is like really bad cramps, thats it, theres no horrible twisting pain like your insides are being pulled out, just cramps. you can have an abortion up to your 4th(?) month i believe in Iowa any way, check out your states laws on that. most clinics require a parent or guardian to be with you, so check that too. best of luck

Two more things:

1) You didn't mention what kind of pregnancy test you've taken, has it just been the regular kit you buy or have you been to a doctor?

2) If this turns out to just be a false alarm, even if your dad doesn't want to get you birth control, isn't there an agency in America that gives it to you for free in certain cases? Planned Parenthood or something?

Indulgence, why is a chemical abortion out of the question? If you're only 4 to 6 weeks, it should be fine.

Also, what about Planned Parenthood? I don't know of any laws in New York or MA but here in Oregon, it is completely confidential even for minors, to a certain extent.

Those things kayla-tastikk told you to read up on are not always the truth. The horror stories that you read from religious pro-life radicals, or unique cases where women may have had bad experiences, shouldn't be trusted and are not as common as they are made to sound. The lies they spread for their own religious/ignorant beliefs are simply disgusting and have nothing to do with real life.

BloodyCandy is 100% right. Some days you will wonder. It's not something you can really get away from, but sometimes it is just the best option.

It is different for every woman, and a choice no one should have to make. I think you should really have a talk with your dad about this birth control issue, when all of this is sorted out.

Get to a clinic asap and consult a doctor there. They will be able to give you all the info. It is much better to get it done sooner rather then later! Different countries (and maybe states) have different time limits on when they allow an abortion, and if you leave to too long then they will refuse to do one. 4-6 weeks is ok but I can't stress enough get it sorted as soon as you can!

Good on your boyfriends mother for helping you out in this situation, your dad is fucking pathetic.

And in the future, go on birth control. fuck what your father says honestly what a god damn poor excuse for a parent! Doctors have to be confidental, so don't be afriad to ask for it.

2.Indulgence, how does an obviously intelligent young woman manage to get pregnant in this day and age? Laziness? stupidity?

I know you are probably not looking for a husband/life partner at your age but any man who will be supportive while you abort his child isn't a man you should be sleeping with or considering a long term relationship with.

Thats one of the things that tends to get overlooked in all this abortion debate.

And I don't mean that in any pro-life soapboxy way. Simply just a statement about his maturity.

They're kids! And you know that I've had experience with a close friend and her teenage pregnacy, I KNOW it can be done but in this case they've chosen the other alturnative - she wants it, probably just as much as he does. I think its a mature decision to make, espeically at their age (and the fact that the guy hasn't run screaming is also a good sign - oh not to mention that hes had the guts to turn to his mother for help!)

I think it was more psychological than anything else.. but I definitely felt like I was having my insides sucked out.. The cramping was fairly intense.. like what I can now compare to the pain of contractions while having a baby. I was more hurt mentally/emotionally than physically. But it was extremely uncomfortable.

EDIT: Contraction pain only not as intense as when you're actually having the baby, obviously.

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies.

BloodyCandy, have you ever had an abortion? I'm hearing that it just feels like really bad cramps and that it's excruciating pain, so I'm a bit confused. Thank you so much for offering to talk, but I don't have MSN, just AIM.

I bought the pregnancy test and did it at home, but I took two to make sure, and they both came out positive. I think Planned Parenthood does give birth control out for free, but the closest one is something like an hour away.

The only reason a chemical abortion is out of the question is because the Planned Parenthood clinic in MA, which is where I'd be having it, apparently only does the surgical abortion. I don't know first hand, this is just what my boyfriend's mom is saying.

Erase Me Sad, I figured that they weren't 100% true, but I figured I'd do some reading on it anyway. I'm not much for pro-life propaganda. :P I'm definitely going to talk to him about it, but for now he's saying I can't go on birth control until I'm 17, which is the age of consent in New York.

kAtE, I'm still trying to decide if I really want this or not, and I'm also still considering the herbal abortion. But I'm very grateful to her for helping me out with this, I can't imagine what I'd do if she didn't.

jackketch, I think it was laziness and stupidity on both of our parts. He pulled out quite a bit but he also came inside me, which I'm quite ashamed to admit seeing where it's gotten us.

He is being very mature about this, and honestly I'm surprised that he's being as supportive as he is about it. He didn't pressure me into it, he said he feels awful that I have to go through it.

I'd be interested in seeing what you had to say, jack, if you wouldn't mind typing it out again.

I just saw Hardly There's post. I can understand the psychological bit of it, but it's slightly comforting to know that it's not terrible searing pain.

No, it's not "searing pain". But you are (or I was) extremely aware of the vacuum of the equipment used. Also, I found it very painful when they injected the medication into my cervix to make it dilate...not to mention the way it made me feel loopy for a few minutes. (Seriously...I couldn't move or talk for a few minutes...but I'm very sensitive to medications.) Some places offer laughing gas or something else to help you relax during the procedure. Whether you take advantage of it is up to you, but recovery can be quicker if you don't. Plus, I think it's good to have the memory of the event. It might act as a stronger reminder for the future and help keep you from making the same mistakes again.

As was said by others, it has its dangers just like giving birth does (especially at a young age). Just make certain you follow all the instructions you are given and follow up with a doctor asap if you have any of the symptoms they warn you about...should you decide to go this route.

Be careful and good luck.

Oh, and I'd like to add that I think it would be best to only do something under a doctor's supervision. Why make the risks even greater?

I did a thread on this not so long back! How the hell can any teen demand/expect to be treated as an 'adult' if they have sex without knowing where and how to source the M.A.P??!

Anyways, flames aside I wanted to expand on what i said before.

Although I'm gonna keep it short because , despite what Kate thinks, I do try hard to keep my extreme Pro Life views out of this kind of thread.

Indulgence, the simple cold hard truth is that he doesn't love you or care for you over much. Now if he's just a 'fuck buddy' then thats not news to you. But please don't delude yourself into thinking you mean something to him.

If you did then his first response (after the sigh of orgasm) would have been 'get your coat , we are getting you the M.A.P.!'. No discussion (unless you WANTED his child ), no excuses, no running to mommykins!

The only one it seems who does truly love and care for you is your Dad (he's a bit misguided perhaps but it sounds like his heart is in the right place).

The father of your child doesn't and his Mom sure as hell doesn't.

But hell, maybe I'm wrong. If you and he are still together in 5 years or married and have a planned child together then I'll publically apologise for doubting him and ship you both a brand new dishwasher at my expense (every couple needs one-trust me on that at least!).And I mean that.

Again without wanting to sound like the father of teenagers that I am, you will realise this for yourself...it'll just take a few years....and a lot of heartache I expect.

Back when i was a psych major i remember doing a case study on depression. The case was that was used in the study found that depression developed in as much as 50% of women who receive it. A secondary study is currently underway at my university but that will take another 10 years according to the rules of the study.

To Those Whose Posts I Have Just Deleted: I said no more 'soapboxing'. That inculdes any reference to abortion being murder or abortion being kinder than social/emotional deprivation.

This thread isn't about that.

I don't want to close this thread but I will if it continues to go down those well worn paths .

If I can manage to keep my own extreme views in check then so can you.

As did the girls too...

You see...it's a strange situation. One that can leave a person (male or female) with both feelings of relief and regret. The regret is very handy for preventing a recurrance, and the relief is handy for helping you move on and not get wrapped up to deeply in those regrets. (sorry, but these days when thinking about emotions I try to think about what purpose they might serve.)

At least, I remember experiencing both feelings...amongst others. I wonder how many couples split because of it too. It can add underlying stress on a relationship sometimes.

It's a very odd way to feel.

Abortion=murder.

There are other options like adoption.

Get the fuck out of my thread.

shadow operative, how can you say that? Have you ever had an abortion or given birth? An abortion is anywhere from $350-$700. Hardly more expensive than a child in the long run. I doubt that you're even female.

jackketch, thank you for your honesty, but how can you expect a teenage boy not to feel relieved after getting rid of (for lack of a better term) an unwanted child? I know I'll feel relieved, possibly a bit guilty.

I think you're right in some aspects. I know that he cares for me and I know I mean something to him, although we're both irresponsible.

Maybe you're right, you have more experience than I do, but I hope you're not.

As harsh as jack was, he speaks truth.

And "my dad won't let me go on birth control" is a crappy excuse.

This wasn't a situation where you were using birth control, he was using a condom and somehow you managed to get pregnant. You were careless. You know that I'm sure, I'm just reiterating. DON'T DO IT AGAIN.

Get on the pill if you ever plan on having sex again.

And don't go for a herbal abortion. That's nearly as bad as the coathanger idea...

I don't think herbal abortion is as bad as the coathanger, it's not harmless and puts a lot of stress on your body, but it can work. I have done a lot of research on it.

I can't tell you how sick I feel for you right now. Being in that situation was probably the hardest thing I ever had to do. A lot of it is the realization that we were, very much, just kids.. He never loved me, he just wanted sex. He really had me going.

I really hope that your boyfriend is everything you think and hope he is. At 15, I know I was more grown up than the majority of the 15 year-old population, but I was still extremely naive.

I'm positive that you understand that you should've been more careful. But I also know that it's hard. Especially if you love him, you just want to please him. It's a number of things.

I wish you good luck. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this.. I really am.

K I saw this and had to post. I don't care if I get banned or whatever, this has to come out of my mind.

You don't know what the fuck the guy does or does not do. You don't know what kinda of fucking conversations they had, what thoughts he had, what thoughts she had. You know this: He is supportive that she is getting an abortion. By saying that he doesn't love you because you're getting an abortion that means you're breaking one of your rules. Guess what you brought in your pro-life argument. If her boyfriend is anything like what I think I am, then he will be supportive in whatever choice she makes. I mean you don't know what kinda of couple they are, I don't believe they should be fucking at such a young age, buy hey...not my choice. Jesus fucking christ I seriously hate what you said. "You're boyfriend doesn't love you," wait you didn't say boyfriend. You said "he." Ok here goes again, "He doesn't love you because he supports your decision," ....what the is that.

Also why would his first thought after their love session be, "TO THE M.A.P.!!!!" It shouldn't be, or else he really wouldn't love her. It would be more along the lines of, "hey lets cuddle I'll make you feel more special," etc... More idiot pro-life thinking.

Yeah, I'm 99.9% sure her dad loves her. I'm also about 50% sure that if he found out, she'd be in a world of hurt. I know if my GF ever got pregnant my dad would throw me out to make sure I get an apartment for her to stay. Her dad sounds like the same, perhaps a little too protective, but I don't know. He obviously doesn't want her to have sex, from what little she said. He sounds like he one who'd get really really pissed if he found out she bumped uglies with someone.

The boyfriends mom seems to love Indulgence. At least like her and sympathize her, or else why would she do something illegal for her....why I ask.

Please take your ignorant pro-life views somewhere else. I'm not calling pro-life ignorant, just your views on this matter. Yet another case where "Moderator" does not mean "intelligent individual."

Oh, and I'm a ginger.

RU-486 is the drug mifepristone, one of the drugs you take when having a chemical abortion. It is not the morning after pill, nor is it similar in any way.

But no, it is not available OTC, but the morning after pill is supposed to be very, very close, at least here.

Apaprently its down to the dosage (ie whether or not is a ECP (MAP) or a chemical abortion.

I don't know, I'm not a chemist. Pretty sure I've seen it refered to as an ECP in the press here.

However you were right to point out that Indulgence almost certainly asked regarding whether it was available OTC for a chemical abortion and not as a general enquiry about the MAP.

I've had an abortion, and it wasn't as horrible as some of the posts imply. Sure I was traumatized emotionally by the whole ordeal, but the actual procedure went fine.

I was nicely sedated, and woke up in a private recovery room. There was no sickly vacuum feeling, or terrible cramps. I was also given a two week supply of pain killers, as a precaution.

My point is, not every experience will be the same. If you do decide to go through with the termination, please make sure you go to a GOOD clinic. It will make all the difference in the world.

Drink Drink Drink Pregnancy Test.

Drink Drink Drink Pregnancy Test.

Hold my finger over the abort button right until the last minute.

If they refuse to abort it, then .... well fuck, decide wether you want it or not, MY ADVICE IS TO NOT HAVE IT. DO NOT HAVE IT.

Decide yes or no. If you still don't want it, Beat The Living Fuck Out Of Yourself.

Pregnancy Test.

If that fails:

tell "them" to abort it or you'll poison yourself.

If that doesn't work and you somehow end up in an insane asylum, escape and become a powerful drug lord BECAUSE THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED YOU.

Edit: and thats BULLSHIT that a chemical remedy will not work.

Owwwwwwwwwww.

Do you get bad cramps?

Imagine cramps.... but the worst ones you've ever had in your life.

Multiply that by 10.

Its less painful than childbirth, surely, but... good luck.

Depending on the state you live, you can expect to be there on the first day for at least 3 hours, unless you go to an amazing place. You have to sit in a waiting room, get an ultrasound, sign lots of papers, talk to a counselor/therapist.... yadda yadda yadda.

And then the next day, they'll perform the procedure (in most states, i think, you need 24 hours to 'think it over').

Shell out the extra hundred bucks it costs to be knocked out during the procedure. It'll be worth it.

If you're having emotional hangups, then just get a dog or a small pet, and think of that energy being in the pet/flower/whatever.

Try not to go alone.

And above all, dont be ashamed. Society is fucked up as ever. Dont let it get to you. And a four week pregnancy? hardly a blip on the ultrasound.

Abortions are somewhat safe before the 20th week. You don't have any other choice but that vacuum but maybe having your baby isn't out of the question. You're parents will eventually get over the initial shock and there is always adoption.

Please read up more on the pro-life side of this situation. what abortion clinics don't tell you should scare the hell out of you.

Abortion=murder.

There are other options like adoption.

I'm 15 also and recently found out that I am pregnant with my rapist's baby. Yet I refuse to commit murder.

Please keep these things in mind.

I don't believe you...

At all...

Don't lie about being raped.

And if that offends you, well I'm glad because you are obviously psycho

Anyways...

I have never had an abortion... but you should do it/do you need someone to go with you? I don't think you do.

Unless you were being sarcastic...

Please consider giving birth and putting the baby up for adoption. Think about it, if you do that this baby could grow up to be a healthy useful member of society.

No sometimes I am just a rather bitter nasty old man who feels the need to respond to a childish personal attack in kind.

I have been asked to post this on behalf of someone who wishes to remain anonymous

"I recently had an abortion. I'm 19 years old. I was about 8 weeks when it

was performed. The clinic I went to only offered surgical abortions, so I

don't know anything about the medical variety.

I was very anxious about the procedure, but to be honest it really wasn't

that bad. I got an injection in my wrist, and within a few seconds I felt

out of it. I was awake, but...indifferent, I guess. It's hard to describe

and my memory is fuzzy. I couldn't feel the vacuum, and I don't remember

hearing it either.

For the rest of the day I felt like I had normal period cramps and light

bleeding.

So no pain or discomfort during the actual procedure.

If I sit down and think about it, I feel bad. But it really doesn't bother

me that much because I simply don't think about it.

I hope everything turns out okay for you, and don't beat yourself up over

it."

All the crap you've read about how it hurt so bad blah blah blah...are crap.

Unless the doc is coming at you with a hanger, it's not true.

YES I speak from experience. They will give you a sedative...it felt like ativan to me. I was aware of what was happening but not afraid. I did feel what I'd compare to slightly uncomfortable pressure and a sort of cramp. A cramp...that lasted about 2 seconds. I was aware enough to be disturbed however, and remember that tears came to my eyes and the thought "I want my baby back" ran through my head as I lay there afterward. I think the meds also made me a little emotional and "out of it". There were about 7 other women there in the recovery room where you stay for maybe 20 min afterward...I was last to go so they were all in there when I got there. No one was in pain or freaking out.

I did tell myself I'd never do it again but that was my personal choice. Obviously, though it wasn't physically painful, it is not a "pleasant" experience. I'm happy to say that I am 6 months pregnant now and couldn't be happier. I was in no position to have a baby then and had no business getting pregnant. I made sure it was a one time mistake on my part and I will always think about it.

I don't regret it, but I do regret getting pregnant then.

Good luck.

Did they mention at what point depression begins. Soon after, or years after. What age group did the study cover?

It was a 10 year study. Started with age groups from 16-26(the age group thought more likely to get an abortion.) about 10% of those who developed it did so a little after they where supposed to deliver, the hormones that change your body during pregnancy was the cause. Most developed it later on in life many as much as 8 years. They regret the decision, those who wanted have a child later and couldn't because of complications due to STD scaring had the most.

I had an abortion back in 1989, at age 23. I consider myself lucky, though, in that I had the option to have it done in Germany just before returning home to the states. I couldn't have dealt with a gauntlet of angry freaks trying to keep me from exercising my Constitutional right to privacy.

In Germany, I had to go through "counseling" and then wait a week to have the procedure. By that time I was about 7 weeks. There was no discussion about sedation or whatever. They gave me general anesthesia, and I woke up in a recovery bay. I think not being conscious during the actual procedure was a BIG help in dealing with the whole situation. Take whatever sedation you can get. Ask for it if they don't mention it.

I had some mild bleeding and some cramps during the few days following the procedure. But nothing severe, I went on with life as if nothing (physical) had happened. I did think about it for the first few years after: how old would it be now, what would my life be like now if I had had it? In my case I know I would have been a terrible mom, and I have never, ever regretted making the decision to terminate.

One thing that did change was that for about six months after the procedure, I needed larger size tampons than I had needed before. I assume this was because my cervix took some time to return to it's previous, undilated state.

Props to your boyfriend and his mother for supporting you through this.

Knowing that people who disapprove of birth control are highly correlated with people who go nuts when their daughter gets pregnant, well ... it's up to you how/if/when you tell either of your parents about this. One of the hardest things for me in the first years after my abortion was that I couldn't talk to anyone in my family about it. It's been 18 years, and no one knows. They never will.

Good Luck OP

Same reason I didn't edit this quote:I couldn't have dealt with a gauntlet of angry freaks trying to keep me from exercising my Constitutional right to privacy.

or this quote: I don't see abortion as murder, nor do I consider a month old fetus a human.

Girls who have had or refused to have an abortion get a little bit more lee-way, in the interests of balance.
