Default Women and Stress/Men and Sensitivity

Recently, my girlfriend's friend was crying, and I asked my girlfriend what was wrong with her. She said that the girl was "stressed." I guess that I didn't respond with as much sensitivity as I should have. (ie I didn't rush to console her) The rest of the day, my girlfriend was kind of mad, saying that I am insensitive and uncaring. She does the "I'm all stressed" thing a lot too, and cries over it sometimes, saying she's overwhelmed. But the thing is, I am equally, if not more stresses, and don't cry about it, which is why I'm not very sympathetic. Not really sure where I'm going with this, but I thought it would be cool to see how other Totseans weigh in on the matter.

She's mad because you didn't feel bad for her friend? That's lame. But yeah, girlies cry, it's a fact of life...

It's sociological and also biological, women are just more predisposed towards crying to release emotions.

Where most men see crying as a form to express sadness, a woman will cry not only to express sadness, but to express anger, stress, happiness and a host of other feelings when she emotionally overwhelmed.

Where as men on the other hand express their feelings in a different fashion, or don't express them at all (which we all know is unhealthy, and can actually cause you to faint).

Just because you didn't rush to comfort her friend doesn't make you insensitive, I mean come on, if you were insensitive you wouldn't have asked about it in the first place. It just means that due to the gender barrier, you don't understand why she is crying over being stressed, when you yourself feel that even though you can be more stressed you don't 'go and cry about it'. It's silly, but both genders do it. We compare our emotional composition to each other and expect the other to react in a similar fashion.

It doesn't happen like that.

The sooner we all understand that, the better.

Give the girl a hug, be there to listen. You don't really have to say anything, just look sympathetic and nod, that's really all we need.

Crying just makes us feel better.
