Default Is your sense of style impacting your romantic success?

..if it is, we'll help!

A few things to start:

1. I like being naked, if I had the choice I'd always be naked. But that isn't an option, and clothes are required by law if you want to venture into public. Accept that. Some of you will bitch and whinge. Don't.

2. Any one who bases their final decision on you based on your clothes isn't worth your time. How ever, first impressions are often superficial ones, deal with it.

3. Constructive criticism. Pwn people, but at the same time tell them how to improve them selves.

4. If clothes have ever been an issue in a relationship in any way, shape, or form, tell us about it.

What to do: Take a few photos of the clothes you generally wear (preferably on you). Give us a basic sense of your style. Every one has favourite clothes they wear when trying to attract the opposite sex, photos of those clothes would be most useful.

I don't really need help. A little more uniqueness with my self wouldn't hurt, but meh. But it's unfair to expect you to post and for me not to, so I'll get the ball rolling. My next post will be photos, you can criticise all you want.

My general style: A tightish fitting t-shirt (I don't own a single button-up shirt, excluding work shirts). A pair of jeans. Never blue denim. Either grey, black, brown or white. I hate blue, every one wears it. A white pair of shoes. Always a belt. A tight fitting jumper in winter. Either wool or zip up hoody. A white leather jacket if it's cold/raining/I'm riding to where I'm going.

How do I feel it works for me? Fairly well. I get compliments on my clothes every now and then, especially when I wear fitted jeans (girls like guys with skinny legs and small waists or something?). But I am certain my clothes aren't ever working against me.

Like I said, I don't think my clothes are what's working against me. Especially in this town. If my shoes don't have holes in them, and my shirt isn't flannel, I'm upperclass. But you might be dressing like a clown and not knowing it, that's where we come in.

I dress really quite well when I'm out and about...otherwise whatever feels comfortable does me well.

Perhaps my branded threads makes girls think I'm too good for them - That MUST be it

Argh! Leb jacket!

I dress deferently depending on where I'm going. Some places won't let you in unless you have a decent pair of shoes and a button up/collared shirt.

I don't own alot of expensive stuff because I don't tend to wear it unless I'm going out. The stuff I usually wear I thrash the shit out of and stuff lasts me ages.

i generally wear this sort of stuff when trying to look presentable like when going out. just jeans and a polo top or long sleeved button shirt.

when i don't care i generally wear track pants with t-shirts and a hoody or sporty style jacket when it's cold.

what is this "presentable"?

I know of only two styles: trashy and classy. then of course there's classy-trashy and trashy-classy.

classy: thrift store jackets, black dickies(or thrift store dress pants), fedora, sunglasses

trashy: my punk cothes

Helping people who's clothes may be effecting their initial impressions on people, thus not getting any sex or affection.

Lebs suck a extraordinary large amount of cock. They wear their cheap leather jackets and drive done up Suzuki swifts/Honda civics. I ride a motorbike, that gives me a reason to wear it .

Luckily I've never encountered one. I think if they tell you that, you're just ugly. Seriously. I go to/have been to Melbournes BEST clubs. I'll wear crappy skate shoes/shoes I stole from a bowling alley and a t-shirt, no problem. Where as one of my friends, who is ugly as sin and will wear the same shoes as me will get turned down, "No skate shoes buddy". It's an excuse they use to kick people out for what ever reason they want. It's probably just different around where you are.

Get somewhere in life?

You don't need to dress to get somewhere in life when the Earth is hurtling through space at thousands of miles an hour.

Presentable is a state of mind, and it's a state of submission, ya' dig?

also: lol @ jeans & tijuana shirt being "presentable"

yeah well you can be on the earth hurtling though space at thousands of miles an hour making an average living or less or you can be successful and thus enjoy hurtling through space on earth a lot more.

I enjoy life no matter how much money I have. I don't need society to dictate to me how I need to be happy.

that being said, how much do all of you spend on your clothes and how often do you guys go shopping for them?

Things I'd suggest, like one or two (not sure if you have them but they're in the wash) bright coloured/stand-out-ish shirts. Something to draw attention to your self.

Haha, I'd love to see that tested. Blind fold a guy and have him inserted into an 18 year old, a 45 year old and then lastly into a 90 year old. Pretty sure he'd be able to tell the difference! or...atleast I'd hope so.

Wow. Over here, Melbourne is notorious as being one place where the clubs are nuts about dress code and on girl-to-guy ratios and shit.

Some places just have a dress standard and they just won't let you in. Admittedly, this has only ever happend to us once, well over a year ago on my 18th birthday. They let me, my mate who was in a hoodie and Dickies and the girls in, but fucked off everyone else.

We were drunk as hell though - and there were about 15 of us.

It just pays to dress for any eventuality. Better to be a little overdressed.

I don't pay much attention to what I wear. They're only clothes.

I've been to clubs with serious rules over footwear. They let me in, since I just took off my shoes and went sockfooted. I've done it a few times.

I've no time to take any pictures, perhaps later.

Usually I'm wearing jeans with one of my ridiculous many pairs of shoes (shoe addiction, leave me alone) varying from my stilettos to my knee high white suede and fluff boots, to my very favorite, my skate shoes.

Topped off with a t-shirt or the girl version of a boy beater, and now a sweater of some type, cuz it's damn cold out.

My style sucks, to be honest. I once ventured out wearing a white top with cherries all over it, a black and grey striped skirt, an animal print bag and blue shoes. I was on vacation though, and I'm assuming drunk, so it's ok. I'll try to find that picture...

And with the girly stuff... I haven't a clue how to apply makeup properly, so I don't do much of that. My hair remains either down and straight or up in a pony tail. Fuck waking up early to be pretty.

So uhh, long story short, I'm a bit of a fashion disaster (hah, I forgot, I bought leg warmers a few days ago) but somehow I still manage to have a boyfriend and get hit on fairly regularly. Except the hot guy in my phil class... goddamn guys, seriously.... wow. It's ok though. I'm going back to sleep now.

Edit! Arquin I like your pants. And Rizzo... I just said "awww." Cuz you look like you're from the early 80's and it makes me happy.

Yeah I used to suck at dressing up but... I have 2 older sisters with a sense for these things and trust me, a sharp dressed man... is a man dressed for success with the ladies. It made a huge difference for me.

I'm an okay looking guy, but I think that when I'm wearing shitty clothes I'm sort of a 6/10, but while wearing nice fashionable shit I'm more like a 8/10 on the looks scale.

You have a nice/half decent figure. You should wear more dresses. Either tight ones, or loose summery dresses with the waists brought in. From one of the photos I saw, you have nice curvy hips, and some booty.

Oh and by the way, you can tell you have low self esteem/self confidence from the way you dress.

The way I dress has more to do with modesty than my low self esteem, I think.

And yes, I do have a booty, lol. I've never been self conscious about it though, because I feel it balances out my broad shoulders.

I like dresses, but it's hard to find flattering ones (I have a little pooch, and a lot of dresses exaggerate it), and I also worry about inadvertently flashing people, lol. Also, where I live it's too cold to wear dresses minus a few summer months.

The majority of my wardrobe is comprised of black or white tank tops, white button down shirts, corsets, cargo pants, pleated skirts and combat boots. On occasion I'll wear a tie with my button down shirt. And I always wear a belt with my pants, it just feels too fucking weird not to.

I also have an impressive aray of stockings, leg warmers, hats, headbands and other accessories that I make myself.

I haven't had any complaints yet!

I usually look like this (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/wineglasslove/p10.jpg)

This is me in formal wear (http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/wineglasslove/305009913_6b281f8672.jpg)

My general style ranges from the cute and cartoonish to the just plain outlandish, if I'm not wearing the aforementioned garments, it's usually something I've made myself. Which can be anything ranging from peach coloured tutu-esque type skirts and corsets, to kimonos

How do I feel it works for me? I feel it works just fine, I do get compliments on my outfits, and I am aware of what I can and can't wear. For example skinny leg jeans or loose fitting t-shirts. So I dress to flatter myself. Or I try to anyways.

I'll admit, that isn't a very flattering photo.

I'll change it.

But you know, it is hard to dress girly when you're female and have shoulders as wide as mine.

To sick-boy and bloodenangel:

You both may have broad shoulders, but do you have a female neck/pronounced collar bones?

If so, next time you're out shopping try on some boobtubes (not the tacky/slutty kind, the nice kind). That way, the attention wont be on the tshirt stretched over your shoulders.

Hair up, with collarbones/upper back visible, maybe the SLIGHTEST bit of clevage. It's an 'open' look, I can't describe it properly. It shows skin, but you aren't showing any of the goods, so it isn't tacky. Just basically wear something that's held up by your breasts, so there's no clothing struggling to fit your shoulders.

Just a suggestion...

Heh, I'm not quite brave enough to reveal my true identity to totse yet. I know there's people on here I know in real life, and no way in hell I want them knowing who I am.

I will, however, take pictures of my various hats and shoes for totse's amusement. Tomorrow. Now I must sleep again.

Pants: Those black jeans kick a huge amount of ass. Very hot. Those other pants, very plain.

Shirts: Brown one, hot. Cream one, kinda good. Orange one, wear it only at the gym or at home. Can't see the other ones.

Jacket: I like it. A lot. Baggy clothes are just an attempt to 'hide'. Every one says they're more comfortable, well I've never noticed it. Any way, when people wear them thinking they're hiding, they're fooling no one. You'd look WAY better with a tighter tshirt. A short one, that meets just at the pants. With that leather jacket over it. Fucking ace.

Love the pants!

I have pants that are similar but the colors are more washed out and are less grey and a tad more green. [I think. I had difficulty seeing greens and reds.]

Anyway. I match them up with pinks and lavendars because I like the contrast of the feminine against the more masculine style. [no pics though]

I wear them more than any other pair of pants that I have because they're just so comfy.

I can't do pics right now till my laptop is fixed but I'm fairly girly in my appearance which might suprise a few of you considering my personality.

Oh how I love how dresses are really in fashion at the moment - I own far too many. Patterned flower ones, short ones, long ones, halter/strapless/singlet. I also wear them with either footless tights, stockings, fishnets, patterneed tights or jeans.

The most casual I tend to get is jeans and some sort of patterned top. I wear a lot of jewelry, mainly costume, funky sunglasses, and headscarfs.

My shoes vary from a range of bright coloured slipper shoes, to chucks, vans and boots.

If I have to be stereotyped then ya, I look like an art student (which I am). Which can be a mix of anything from punk, kitche, emo, artsy etc.

I have to say a guy with a good dress sence is a fucking big turn on for me, I like people that can put some pride into their appearance, espeically when going out.

Ummm, you dressed up looks too cluttered. Kind of like some one shot you with a clothes gun that fires random pieces of clothing.

You normal, excellent. Much much MUCH better. Smallest suggestion, you obviously have nice legs. Wear jeans that are tight around your thighs AND your calves. It'd be so much sexier. But I don't know about fashions from where you're from.

Also, I know you're trying to keep your identity hidden, but wont your friends just be able to look at your clothes and go "Hey, that's Demoiselle!" or am I just waaay too conscious about what my friends wear?

They're probably 'trendy' because they're very sexy, flatter one's body and practical.

Practical because tight jeans are soooo much warmer, but warmth is only a concern depending on where you live.

Any way, around here, fat girls wear baggy jeans, because if they wore tight jeans it'd be a tad....well, disturbing.

Any way, skin tight clothes = you get what you see. Baggy clothes make me concerned with what lies beneath.

But that doesn't matter for Demoiselle, she has a boyfriend and isn't trying to attract other guy's attention (or is the lack of love sealing the deal?) sorry if that's too personal, just curious.

They only look okay on girls with skinny legs/small hips. If you have any meat on your legs/hips they're not flattering at all...

I have a pair of skinny jeans (so I can tuck them into boots) and once I find the battery for my camera, I'll take a picture with them on. I'm not overweight, but they make me look soooo fat.

Edit - Dem, not calling you fat, you can definitely pull off skinny leg pants. But yeah, everyone and their mama wears skinny jeans these days and I find that off putting.

Boot cut jeans FTW. They're pretty much universally flattering, creating curves for skinny girls and minimizing them for voluptuous girls.

And along with that I'll throw on a fitted polo, buttondown or thrift store t-shirt. It works for me.

Though, I have yet to find a jacket or hat that I really like. :/

No you're right, they are a very desaturated green with grey and brown patches. I wanted the green pair but they only came in a skinny leg style. Which due to my wide hips and the fact my thighs are more then three inches in circumference I can't wear.

I envy you being able to match yours up with a more feminine aspect. I've just come to realise that whenever I try to dress 'female' I just end up looking 'stupid'.

I look rather masculine most of the time.

Agreed.

I like retro/funky type of dressing, I like it to look unique even if people are like "WHAT THE FUCK?".

Favorite brands, armani exchange, sass and bide, marcs, babydoll (marcs), adidas (adidas originals make some kickass shit) nine west for shoes, roy (jeans),sportsgirl exclusives range (short retro jackets, love sleeves, big cuffs etc) and some others cbf thinking of right now... oh roberto cavalli and christian dior..

Cant take pics with this webcam buttt just to quickly describe, Jeans: hipsters (low), tight straight leg cut, stretch denim usually because rigid gives no room for ass. Jackets i LOVE.. i like short jackets, i have a nice armani exchange one that looks like a sailors jacket, big cuffs, short, black, zips up with a small corset tie at the back.. buttons down the sleeves.. i equip that with some nice denims, knee high grey flat suede boots, big yellow hoop earings, nice yellow waist belt and a grey long singlet under the jacket... you can always chuck on some big bangles or a necklace but sometimes its TOO much if its a bright color.

The other type of look i like is plain and simple, adidas original tracksuit... pants tucked into my high rise adidas kickboxing boots and a pony tail with hoop earings.. (i know arquin it screams "WOGGGGGG LOL" ) but i really love my tracksuits.. sooo comfy.

When i went clubbing alot i used to go all out, like fucking WOW WEIRD.. i wore grey little tight shorts, bright blue tights underneath and grey flat boots.. and ontop i wore a black singlet with something sparkly on it and big hoop earings/headband/necklace.. or i would wear my suspender skirt.. (short skirt with suspender straps over your shoulders) its grey, black tights under and white boots.. white long stretchy t shirt with something nice printed on the front and chucked on nice earings/necklace.

I LOVE necklaces with big charms on them, me and my best friend go nuts with them.. one i have has a set of vampire teeth on it: http://www.mycatwalk.com.au/pages/lee-riot_18.html , one has a big gun which we both got.. one has a big key and a lock and some other little crystals.. shit like that. OH and some nice headbands look the shit with good earings..

My hair used to be white blonde, but it got damaged and i changed to brunette which fucking rocks ZOMG.. I know its hair and it shouldnt be here but in MY opinion hair is such a huge asset to style.. Im changing mine chucking white blonde hair extensions through it so i dont have to bleach it.. layering it out and teasing it up a bit. cant wait.. expensive though RARRRR!!!!

If i can borrow my friends digital cam this week i will actually take photos of these clothes, earings and shit so its easier to describe.. basically i just love funky/retro.. anything thats out of the ordinary because when you go out now days everyone is wearing the same shit and it gets very boring.

OK, to answer the question "Is your sense of style impacting your romantic success?" Yes it does unfortunately with everybody... I think your personality shows in the clothing you like, colors, materials and fabrics, cuts etc.. Although i dress ALOT more modest now because ive taken religion as a more serious aspect of my life so these things did need to change. I dont know if it will really every go back..

Oh and the comment on "leb jacket" LOL... i actually thought it was a very nice jacket but i do see what ur saying there ...lol.

Hehe. Partially correct. Sometimes grumpy, and more disappointed with humanity than angry with the world. And not fat, I'm pretty sure. But uhh... yeah. The thing you said about potential... I'm far too lazy to go through all the effort of looking done up and "perfect" all the time. And to stay on the thread topic, I've found that guys, in the long run, prefer girls that are high maintenance, which I am not. No idea why. Dependence, insecurity? Unless I have another fatal flaw (other than being somewhat bitchy) that I'm unaware of...

I don't understand what's attractive about caked on makeup, ridiculously styled hair and an overall immaculate appearance if it's going to disappear in the morning. Not when you're trying to attract a mate, or whatever. Yes, it's inappropriate to walk into work looking like you fell out of bed, but that's a little different.

Hah, funny story. In high school, we had to go on this retreat thing. Girls and guys dorms were separate. A bunch of guys came into the girls dorm in the middle of the night, and this one girl, who was supposed to be hot shit, freaked out because she had no makeup on and didn't want anyone to see her like that. Hilarious, because I wouldn't want anyone to see me like that either. The girl looked freakin scary not being all done up. Idiot.

Anyway. Done now.

Nothing is attractive about caked on makeup. Period. But crazy hair styles, I can dig. Thing that pisses me off is when girls wear make up at stupid times. When I was dating Amanda, she'd wake up before me, and apply makeup. I was like "what the fuck, are you wearing makeup?" fucking crazy chicks...

This thread reminds me that arquin is at least half gay.

Then I remember that fashion is a respectable hobby and interest; not to mention, a billion dollar worldwide industry.

I don't really have any fixed sort of style, I just wear what I like, and perhaps it does affect my "success" somewhat, perhaps. I certainly need to buy some new clothes in the future, but I just don't get the whole designer label culture, sure you can go in for it if it works for you, but it's just not me, and I wouldn't really want to change how I dress for anyone...

Random pics I took of clothes lying around:

http://tinyurl.com/yoe5kg http://tinyurl.com/yto7tm

Yer, I definatly need to get some more trousers, appart from that i'm fairly happy with my mix-n-match kinda style, plus it doesn't break the bank...

Interesting thread anyhow.

EDIT: I find general layed back, funky wierdness very attractive in a girl's clothing, it takes a degree of confidence to wear what the hell you want to wear, and to develop your own style. So many people are just keen to have their wardrobe dictated to them by the nearest magazine; cough belts on the outside of clothing cough.

Go to a thrift store. A big one near a rich suburb/city/area. Rich people throw away good clothes. You can pick up REAL bargains there.

Get well fittet jeans. Worn denim. Faded. Not shredded. Tight t-shirts with suit jackets over them. Or if that's overdone, pinstripe trousers. Even cooler, pinstripe jeans. Buy retro stuff, from like...the 70's. Seriously, fur (fake) is the shit!

Jeans have always been blue though, so I don't consider that trendy. Especially since really unfashionable people wear blue jeans too.

Oh, and what's all this skinny shit arquin, you look really built...

Bicycle, I agree with you, I do seem to look like a different person in every picture. Which is confusing, because I don't know what I really look like. I don't trust what I see in the mirror, because I'm a girl and we have the ability to distort our mirrored images wildly, lol.

I used to think Totse was full of immature goth, punk, emo kids.

My body type is athletic to the slender sider and I've got long hair.

Style 1

. torn jeans (navy blue, sky blue)

. dirty looking jeans (navy blue, sky blue)

. checked full sleeved shirt (blue, maroon, green, white)

. AE tees (maroon, white, black)

. Chuck Taylors (maroon, blue)

I usually wear the shirt over the tee, unbuttoned

Style 2:

. Replace the torn jeans with neat and fresh looking ones

. Plain single colored full-sleeved shirts (brown, dark blue, sky blue, black, whire)

. Adidas, Chuck Taylors

What's your impression about me?

Taken from the "Post your picture, I'll guess your personality" thread in SG:

"I'm gonna assume you dress well, since you know people base their decisions on your external appearance. (By well, i don't mean any particular type of fashion - just that you put some thought into what you'll wear for the day)...Not cocky, nor too flashy , but as I said in my fashion statement, you manage to get your noticed and in a way that doesn't make you conceited."

Which is pretty exact. I wear jeans every single day along with plain shirts and hoodies/sweaters. Lots of layering. Dresses in the summer as I hate wearing shorts. I have a lot of shoes, but usually only wear my chucks or uggs (they're insanely comfortable) and flip flops in summer.

Dressed up for a dinner last night: http://tinyurl.com/2p4zfg

Mirror shots, haha: http://tinyurl.com/2muk8u http://tinyurl.com/2l58gs http://tinyurl.com/2vpd27

Ignore the hat in this last one.

I'm the one in white: http://tinyurl.com/2nqq4v

And, the clothes I wear the most: http://tinyurl.com/3369fc

As for how my clothes affect my romantic success, I guess I'm doing something right because I'm in an amazing relationship right now.

Only one of those polos fitted you well. And it looked good.

The polos them self don't look bad. It's just that they're too baggy. You want a t-shirt or shirt to be just a little bit lower than you wear your pants. So if you lift your arms up directly above your head, a teeny amount of your stomach is showing.

Try and get new shoes. They really stand out.

You'd look much better in denim and t-shirts. Maybe some board shorts.

*edit*

Looking through them again, more like 2 of them fit well. Maybe three. But their designs are bad. The pink one is good, as is the last one, the white horizontal striped one.

The orange striped one is just...no. The black one, so/so. But the pink and white ones actually look good on you.

How are those?

I'll admit that shoes aren't exactly my thing, but I can tell good from bad.

The puma ones are decent. Something like that but in all white/black laces would be good. Well, that depends entirely on if you go clubbing or not.

The green ones, fucking ace. So out there. I've NEVER seen a person with a pair of shoes like that. If I saw you wearing them, respect.

I hate that my camera is flat right now.

I'm pretty mini so I can't wear a lot of things because I'd look squat & a lot of clothes can be too long on the body and it looks daft.

I have twiglet legs and my hips barely exist so it's cigarette cut jeans/cords with loose/floaty tops, short floaty dresses with opaques or short shorts with opaques & a blousey top. Waistcoats, woolen, yesss, probably denim soon too.

I have a major hate for my arms/shoulders/back so I haven't worn anything less than near elbow length in years and I never wear t-shirts EVER. Skirts make me look kinda stumpy and trousers don't often fit my legs right. Fitted t-shirt things make me look stumpy too, so I wear floaty things or really skin tight leotard type tops. My waist & hips are pretty high too, so staying away from fitted tops means I manage to look a relatively normal shape.

I'm pretty cornered in what's available and the petite ranges often suckk, so I end up taking in clothes a lot & just stick to my safe zone. I make the best of it mind, my safe zone is pretty wide.

It could all change with s/s07 though(nah, I'll just change the cuts & colours in my safe zone)..

edit: pooooo I totally missed the point. The general consencious is that I dress real cute and my boyfriend got a few winks this weekend and a little boy said I was sexy. good enough for me==]

You may be a nudist, but clothesing isn't as superficial as you make it out to be. Besides protecting you from the elements (which is what they're intended to do) clothesing serves a purpose that all animals do; just like birds attract a mate with their plumage. Clothesing and the way you physically present yourself (hair, makeup, skin, etc...) trigger a subconcious reaction from people.

For instance, there's this really fat ugly girl who works at the Walgreens where I live. She's very friendly and about thirty years old. She has thick glasses, grown up acne, is about two hundred pounds, and has long, flat hair. And not that she's a bad person or anything, but whenever I see her I think "Yea. That's why you're thirty and work at Walgreens with a bunch of people who can't speak English." You're not going to get ahead in a coorporate world if you don't present yourself in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Nor will you find a mate. And on a biological level, you're suppose to attract a mate. Therefore, if you don't at least try to attract a mate and make yourself presentable you're a biological failure.

So, it's all well and fine to be a nudist, but saying that anyone who judges you on what you wear isn't worth your time is ridiculous, because everyone does that subconciously. You can't help it and you do it, too. If you see someone who is all nasty in filthy clothes, drooling all over themselves, with dirty matted hair, you're not going to be as apt to ask them for the time as you would be to ask a pretty lady in a well put together suit.

It's simply nature.

EDIT: Reread it. You didn't make it out to be superficial.

Cheers,

Lost
