Default how fast attitudes have changed..

Oc6 sent me this and it rather got under my skin ,especially in regard to the sexual attitudes (which is why I am posting it here) I'm not an American nor am I as old as the person in question but I can still understand where he is coming from.

quote:

How old is Grandpa???

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general ..

The Grandfather replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:

'

television

'

penicillin

'

polio shots

'

frozen foods

'

Xerox

'

contact lenses

'

Frisbees and

'

the pill

There w

ere no:

'

credit cards

'

laser beams or

'

ball-point pens

Man had not invented:

'

pantyhose

'

air conditioners

'

dishwashers

'

clothes dryers

'

and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and

'

man hadn't yet walked on the moon

Your Grandmother and I got married first, . . and then lived together.

Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir".

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir."

We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk.

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . . but who could afford one?

Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

'

"grass" was mowed,

'

"coke" was a cold drink,

'

"pot" was something your mother cooked in and

'

"rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.

'

"Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,

'

" chip" meant a piece of wood,

'

"hardware" was found in a hardware store and

'

"software" wasn't even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap... and how old do you think I am?

I bet you have this old man in mind...you are in for a shock!

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

This man would be only 59 years old

World has changed a lot in things sexual since i was a kid.

For example:

When I was 14 or so there was one kid in my class whose parents were divorced and he was almost a pariah because of that.

Nowadays teachers seem surprised to hear that my kids' biological parents are married to each other .

Infact my kid's feel deprived because they only have ONE daddy.

Social evolution is what happens when the world becomes connected in some many different ways. Tradition and whatnot will only be destroyed further.

Hell, I can remember back when I was a kid a good deal of things were different. Back when I was in middle school pages just caught on, and they had to be ruled against allowing them. Now a days, primary school kids carry cell phones, and some even carry laptops. Big deal.

Life goes on, and on. And on and on and ON. That's why we grow up and give birth: To make the world a better and more productive place. If I had been born forty years earlier, I wouldn't have had the same chance with computers as I have in this day and age. I'd have trained and became a police officer or something, and that'd been the end of that.

Truthfully, I welcome change with open arms. And really, I know a lot of people three times my senior that welcome it in the same way. It's not old people that don't change: it's old minds.

Ah, you're just being psuedo-old and feeling nostalgic. Anyone can do that, my brother stays up later than I did when I was his age! Anyway, whoever wrote that clearly doesn't know much about the history of penicillin. I could poke more holes, but you know... lethargia.

I like how when I was in school, teachers always felt the need to ask if my parents were still together seeing as how the "norm" is for everyone to be divorced...kinda sad

i have to agree that social evolution is the answer to this. When i was in middle school, i didnt even have a mobile phone, the only person i knew with one wasmy dad. Noy my 7 year old cousin has one, and a laptop, and an ipod, no big deal really.

Its phrases that get me. I remember when i was little the word "gay" meant you were homosexual or really happy. Now its used as a way of saying something is stupid, and thats the context my 7 year old cousin uses it, as well as all his mates.

I remember when my mom first got her pager. And using payphones... Come to think of it, I can't even remember the last time I saw a working payphone. I can't even imagine leaving without my phone. Not even to talk on it, just in case there's an emergency. My stepsister is in sixth grade and carries a cell phone.

When I was in sixth grade, I still played with Polly Pockets and American Girl dolls (only behind closed doors and with close friends, of course. But I still played with them). I had also just gotten into Harry Potter, went to bed at 10pm, and begged my dad for ice cream every time we went out. I see kids that age now acting like my friends and I did our freshman year of high school.

When I was in third grade, there was a girl whose parents were divorced. It was a topic you didn't even touch.

Society evolves SO fast. I'm young, and I can already see it.

Ive been thinking about this and have came up with a question; Is society evolving really a bad thing, or is it that when certain aspects of society evlve they beome a a thing?

I remember when my dad got a car phone, it was this huge clunky thing, and he was the only person I knew who had one. I got my first video game system and my first cell phone when I was starting high school, and was SO excited when I finally got them. Now I have a cousin who just turned 6 and his parents got him an Xbox 360. His sister's 9 and has a cell phone.

The golden age in society will ALWAYS BE fifty years IN THE FUTURE. Why? Because no matter how fast we move, we'll be moving ten times as fast in fifty years. Easily.

It might seem to "slow down" the older you get, but that's only because you're becoming old and change is becoming too hard on you. Really now, you're letting your mind stop allowing change. That's the difference between those people that live fifty years and die angry and confused, and those that live one hundred years and die happy and loved. The ability to accept change.

Youre right, the golden age of the FUTURE is always 50 years ahead. But when talking ina retrospective state so as to compare the present with the past, it is ALWAYS 50 years in the past. I agree on the inablity of accepting change thing. I mean i just go with the flow, mind you i never pay much attention to negative affects of change unless it benifits me most of the time.
