He's not 100% sure yet, but I have a good feeling that he will, so let's assume that he is.

Let me start out by saying that he lives 4 hours away (in Worcestor, MA), so we don't have a very easy relationship to begin with.

Things were going pretty well for a while, I was seeing him fairly regularly for a long distance relationship. Something that I won't go into happened recently that prevents me from going to his house, which isn't a huge deal, he can still come to mine although it's not as fun.

Then today he told me that he is definitely going into the Marines this time (he had previously enlisted, failed a drug test, and changed his mind). I really, really don't like this idea. He knows this and asked me if I'd still want to be with him if he joined, and I'm honestly not sure. I love this boy more than anything, but I don't want to be dating a corpse, you know? Not being able to see/talk to him would also be hard, but the possibility of him dying is what really gets me.

I guess the fact that I said that got him thinking, as he then told me that he wasn't completely sure if he was going to do it or not.

His inconsistency is another thing that bothers me, but I can deal with that more easily than I can deal with the thought of him getting shot by a Muslim in a miserable desert.

I don't even know why I made this thread, I'm just scared shitless and looking for advice, I guess.

What would you do in my situation? Am I being selfish?

I say you stay with him. things could get better. Well, first of all, tell your man I said thanks. We need more people who aren't scared to step up.

Second, I'm going to think of things that would benefit YOU if he decides for sure that he wants to enlist. You have a couple options:

Marry him. Crazy, I know, but you love him. You'll become his dependant. The government will pay for you to live with him and all of your needs will be covered. Granted, there are some places where you simply won't be able to go, but that's just part of the job. Regardless of such, this will ensure that you're always with him or at least near him.

The other option is to stay with him, but don't marry him. It'll be a lot harder to be with him this way, and you two will probably drift apart. He's going to be where the Navy wants him to be. Needs of the Navy. That's what it's all about as a marine.

Don't worry about him, otherwise. US marines are highly trained and very efficient. Granted, they're no SEAL, but they're still trained by the best.

Well my advice for you has changed now that I know you're 15. You shouldn't stay with him, it would most likely just be harder on someone your age if he did die. I'm thinking of enlisting into the Marines myself when I'm of age (15 currently), and if I do have a girlfriend by that time, I don't think I would want them to suffer. Either that or somehow enlist with him...

Well in my opinion, it is not human nature to be able to love some one or feel loved by someone who just isn't there. If he is in the military, he will be gone for long periods of time and him enlisting will make the distance between you grow both emotionally and literally. Do not ask how I know.

My girlfriend basicly told me she was going to break up with me when I joined and we could get back together afterwords. Keep in mind, I was doing Army ROTC. Then she was very wishy-washy on the whole thing. Saying she'd stay with me, then saying she wouldn't, then saying she wasn't sure.

I made it very easy for the both of us and broke up with her.

Now we're back together because she's basicly accepted me for exactly who I am now...

Although I'm not doing the ROTC, I went back to doing minor bad things... and she's okay with that.

Even if he enlists right this very second it wont be for a while until he would actually be deployed to Iraq, at least a year. They have Basic booked many months in advance, and going to School of Infantry is even more of a waiting list if he goes for an infantry MOS, which are the only guys that get killed very often in Iraq.

I know a girl whos boyfriend went into the marines. 2 weeks after he left I fucked her brains out.

Fuck him. If hes dumb enough to join the fuckin marines then you dont want him as a boyfriend.

Everyone has their own reasons, I just see this as the main reason a lot of people that don't even know what is going on, like to comment on shit. Well as a marine, and i am actually from worc too. But its a hard life and marines is a family, relatives will help you. But the problem is the distance, all of us got dear john letters. So it would probably never survive. Its just statistics. I lost my last girl during boot never had one since nor do i plan to. Hurt me to much.

As for deployments, the commandant issued an order reorganizing the way marines are deployed. 1 tour to two years home for active, 1 to 5 for reserves.
