Default Women's Shelter Construction

The security on this set of buildings is unbelieveable. It possesses carded security doors, handle-less trilock steel-core doors, full coverage camera sweeps, pressure sensors, bulletproof glass, and walls that can handle an explosive-based attack. The women's rooms are split into three room sections on each floor; these sections each have a steel-core door in the hallway section.

I've worked on banks and prisoner holding tanks with FAR less security. I've spoken to the people who will run the shelter and they will have quite a security force.

I'm both impressed and saddened at having witnessed these things. Has anybody here had experience with a shelter? are they all setup in this manner?

Yes I have had a lot of security experience (including such 'refuges'/fem nazi training camps)and IMO a large part of their security is a poor joke.

It always fails on the human element.

I have witnessed multi million dollar State of the Art bank security systems disabled because someone couldn't be bothered to go through 'all that rigmarole'.

Just as an example: There was a time when they tried to keep the location of such refuges secret. Except of course, by necessity, every taxi driver in the city had to know the address...

Not a problem of course cos we all know that taxi drivers are the bestes and nicest people on the planet [/sarcasm]

And btw steel core doors aren't worth shit if the first time there is a heat wave they are jammed opened with a box of diapers cos the A/C ain't up to the job or some of her kids want to run in and out.

You see the problem?

And woe betide any security guard who tries to make an issue of keeping up security (on that you can trust me 100%).

That's ^^^ when the guard has to give the women the back of his hand, with a traditional, 'See what you've made me do?!"

Clearly the best idea if you work at a women's shelter.

I'm sorry, but what exactly is the point in constructing a women's shelter like a prison? Aren't the women going there trying to escape a prison-like life? Abuse, and such? I'm confused...

It's not to keep them in, it's to keep men out.

Men being the aggressors.

While we're at it, someone should build some more fucking homeless shelters. I'm willing to bet there's more homeless than battered wives.

Since this is Canada, I would hazard a guess the taxpayer pays for this.

(And no I'm not American)

One of the security firms I used to work for had a government contract to guard a womans shelter.

There was a big debate among the guards whether or not they should be armed.

Not, you understand, to be able to better protect the woman from attack by their former partners...oh no...but to protect the guards from the women!!

No I ain't joking and you gotta remember that european security men usually hate the idea of having to carry any firearm. We don't have that american thang of equating barrel length with cock size and thought of getting shot for a measly $15-20 an hour just doesn't appeal.

Telling one of the women that perhaps inviting strange men back to the shelter was 1.verboten and 2. A REALLY DUMB IDEA, was a really good way for a guard to get stabbed or accused of harassment.

There were French police with guns when I was there, but I wasn't worried since they probably would have shat themselves and run away at the sight of a water pistol... being French and all.

Wise man.

I'd never have considered going into a womans shelter. Sure, it may protect you from those 'nasty horrible men out there'... but then what's protecting you from the nasty horrible women inside?.

Even when I got away from my dad I'd wouldnt have considered a refuge. For one, it felt like a stupid kid escaping a nasty evil fucker like that was childish..and that I would be wasting resources that could go to a woman who truly needed them.

And secondly, what sort of life would it be to hide in a faceless building with bars over the window? And what if he got in? I'd rather take my chances in teh big wyde world where there are lots of places to hide rather than cower in a glorified cage forever.
