trust in close friendships
If you had told something to a close friend and specifically told them not to let it past them, and they did, would yo be annoyed at it even though it was a pretty minor thing?

Re: trust in close friendships
No.... I would tell them even more intimate secrets and just assume they learned their lesson....

Yes, I would be...and I'd never trust them again.

Re: trust in close friendships
It depends if the thing was presented as minor, or if it was presented as major.
It also depends on the level of trust I have for the person. Does it bother me that they would share things I prefer to be kept secret?

Re: trust in close friendships
the minor things was i told a friend i slept with someone i shouldnt of, and they proceeded to tell a few folk...
I am not bothered about folk knowing it is just that i said "this doesnt go past you" and she replied with "yes, sure"
She is the closest friend i have, we have been through so much shit and we have been there for each other blah blha blah... so we are close.
She appoligised and she was stoned so...

Re: trust in close friendships
Just keep in mind that if the minor things can't be kept private do you think the major things will be?

Re: trust in close friendships
I used to trust friends, or I was just really stupid. Either way, I don't actually "trust" any friends with anything, I.e talking about things, and them not telling others and what not, or making a stupid assumption about something - etc. Only person I truly trust is my girlfriend.
There are about 3 friends thats I trust, kinda, but no one else. Gaining my trust is very hard now a days, I do have a better quality of living though...

Re: trust in close friendships
Its happened to me before... It was years ago. I told a friend something very personal while rolling and he told our whole table at the pub one night.
It took a long time to build up any sort of trust after that, and I still wouldnt trust him anywhere near the way I originally did.

Re: trust in close friendships
I know her too well to just say, "thats it, not trusting you anymore..."
She knew it wouldnt bother me, the bit where others knew. But the trust point is the bit bothering me.
It has put me in a shitty mood, and i have smoked too much now, bloody hell, friends...

Re: trust in close friendships
Then you should have known she'd share what you told her with others, if you actually knew her that well. If that is so, then did you set her up?
That is...if you really know her well.
Do you really think you do now?

Re: trust in close friendships
I dont think i 'set her up'. I quite clearly stated that she was not to tell the person, but she did.
I do know her as well as i think, she has just pissed me off a bit.
Interhuman relationships are too complex.

Re: trust in close friendships
You seemed to be making excuses for her, so I thought I'd see if you felt somewhat responsible somehow.
She just might not be a person you can share certain things with. So just don't put you or her in that situation again if you can help it.

Re: trust in close friendships
It's best just to accept a persons limitations. It doesn't mean they're not a friend.
Go chill...
