Default shes on the pill but...

Well my girlfriend just started birth control pills. The thing is though, she still wants a condom used because she is that afraid of getting pregnant. What are the risks of getting pregnant using the pill? And is using a condom everytime just a waste of money and being too paranoid? Also, what is something I could say to convince her that birth control would be enough? We both lost our virginity to eachother like a year ago, so we know neither of us have and stds and whatever.

Any constructive input is much appreciated.

How old are you?

There is nothing you can say to make her believe that birth control pills are enough.

Why?

because they're not.

You can still get pregnant on the pill, especially in your teenage years through to your twenties, because your body is hyper fertile.

Further more, if she misses a pill, and it only has to be one, her body will take a whole fortnight to readjust back to the pill. I'm not saying your girlfriend is unreliable, but it happens you know.

Condoms are cheaper than kids.

If she's going to fork out forty bucks everytime she needs a new pack of pills, the least you could do is buy some condoms.

The pill has synthetic progesterone, tricking the body into 'thinking' its pregnant, thus stopping ovulation. Its obviously not 100% accurate, but nothing aside from abstinence is. Using a condom would increase the odds even further of not getting pregnant and protect against possible STDs.

Its not completely necessary, obviously, to use both, but if she feels more comfortable, then you probably should.

Keep with the condoms until her next mensturation. Her body can adjust to the new hormone levels. She might be more assured then.

You're supposed to use condoms for the first month on birth control anyway. Tell her she should take it at the same time everyday for it to be most effective. If she never ever forgets, then chances are she wont get pregnant. But if she's still paranoid, suck it up and use condoms.

you see where it tells you the percentage of effectiveness? subtract that from 100 and that's your risk of pregnancy. there is no such thing as being too paranoid. that being said, i'm kind of being a huge hypocrite here. i rarely use condoms because i'm on the pill. keep in mind though that i chose to do that; i didn't need any convincing. in fact i went on the pill in order to be able to have sex without condoms. if your girlfriend wants to use them, just do it. she's not going to change her mind, or if she does it's going to cause a lot of issues later on because she'll have only done it because she felt pressured.

will condoms kill you? no? go on then.

Well, I took the first pill five days after my period started, and that was just fine because the hormones had enough time to do their job before I could ovulate.

Oh, and I just thought of this:

If she's still paranoid about getting pregnant even after her first cycle on the pill, don't have sex a few days before and after when she "should have been" ovulating. Unless you have some kind of ultra-vaginal-environment-resistant swimmers, there is little chance she would get pregnant even if you two weren't using any method of birth control.

I really wouldn't bother wasting money on two different methods of contraception at once. Yeah, one can fail. At what odds, like 4% of the population during their lifetime use. Probably because they failed to follow the instructions too

Most of these are 98 point something or 99 point something for the use of a year. Meaning for a year of use, there's a less than 1 to 2 percent chance of anything happening.

As long as you keep using the pill and a condom, you'll have a better chance of remaining a "Silent Assassin".

Hey, thats fair enough... I believe those statistics and such, but whats stopping yourself being a part of that 1-2 percent of the population where in-fact the contraception fails? Thats enough to scare the hell out of me.

There is supposed to be a male contraceptive pill on the market soon.

The reason for the long wait:

Female pills = counter 1 egg

Male pills = counter ALOT of sperms

IDK when exactly it is set for release but I think if you were BOTH on the pill, that would pretty much eliminate any chance of pregnancy?

For example, that 1% failure rate would be probably overlapped by the other pill.

So assuming the male pill is 99% effective, you're looking at like a 1 in 10,000 chance of pregnancy.

the pill is proven 99.99% effective when taken correctly..

you guys who say your girlfriends got pregnant while on the pill, that's because they weren't taking it correctly. not because the pill 'failed'.

by far one of the most stupid things i've ever read in my entire life.. are you even being serious??

Same force that keeps me from being struck by lightning or hit by a bus because the driver sneezed. You take far worse risks every day

Thanks for all the great replies guys. My girlfriend thinks that if it would happen to anyone, she would be the one. She worries about things too much I think.. but I also have another question. What are the effect of the pill on her sex drive? Is it going to boost it? Is it going to make it almost not existant? I haven't even seen her without any clothes on in like 2 weeks, so that tells you how often she feels the need to get physical at all. I hope to God that it doesn't make it less than what it is now. What do you guys think? Girls who are on the pill, what did it do for you?

much appreciated for serious replies.
