I wrote a written request for my aptitude and fitness scores. With aptitude I scored in the highest 3% of people that sit the test (any one entering the defense force), and with fitness in the top 10.

15 push ups required, I did 61.

45 sit ups required, I did 120.

7.5 on the shuttle run, I did 10

This was for a BASIC rifleman, all my results could have gotten me into the fucking special forces. FUCK.

Money - As an E5, I was making ~$650 a week. It takes most people 5 years to make E5.

Job security - Yes, but you can't QUIT either. Do you REALLY want to sign up for a job you can't quit? And they can kick you out anytime it's convienient for them, and that discharge will follow you.

Adventure - Gets old after a year unless you go on deployments to new places every time.

Mateship - That, I will miss.

Free health and dental - There wasn't a way in hell they were taking my wisdom teeth for no reason. And Motrin is base medical's candy. Unless a limb is hanging by some skin, you won't get much service. Throw a fit, and you could be NJPed.

Patriotism - Ok.

Skills - As an infantryman, you just wasted 4 years of your life. Get an IT or electronics job. I was an ordnanceman, I can't do shit.

Opportunities for further study - If it's anything like the US, total farce. You work 12 hours a day; the most study you'll get is online college or correspondence.

Dicipline - The military made me more aware of laws and the world, but it also made me reject them. I break laws almost religiously because I don't think anyone else has the right to tell me how to live my life, since I'm not hurting anyone. Fuck the social contract.

Better life style - It has it's ups and downs. Don't be stupid and it'll be better than not.

Housing loans - Not a bad option. Just get out with a good discharge.

Remember, always get it first before you drop something!

It would obviously depend on the mental illness. If I remember correctly, arquin is bipolar and has it under control. I don't think it would affect his ability to be a soldier. If he was schizophrenic, then yeah, that would be different.

It fucking sucks, based on my test scores and such, I was told it would be a good idea to apply to the commando special forces. They gave me a sheet, and it says that there are 24 possitions open nationally, and 2 in my state.

Maybe you should apply for the CSF...

RW, our army is involved in Iraq so don't slag us off. We're helping you in your bloody mess. We also have regional issues, such as East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, all of which require peacekeeping or military presence.

I also can't get into the army reserves, I think it's something to do with politics. Anyway, as an Australian, can't you join the British Army? The US army is recruiting non-nationals, but if you join they'll keep you in combat for a long time (I think 6 yrs) more than you agreed to anyway. Maybe join the Navy or summit.

For New Zealand, other commonwealth citizens can join the army, but they can't go on overseas missions without a NZ passport, so you'd have to be a citizen before you were deployed anywhere.
