Default My relationship with....

[Ok, so I know this isn't quite suited to here, but it is about a relationship of sorts, and this forum and its residents seem far better suited for this (more so 'Ketch, I think).]

It's 10:25am, and I've not been out of bed for an hour yet. I start work at 12:30pm and I've already cracked open a can of Hobgoblin(ale for those who aren't in the know). Suffice to say this isn't really a good thing, but I've been drinking a hell of a lot more than I usually do recently. Before, during and after work included. It's not like I'm always geting drunk, but just afew beers or whatever and I don't want anymore for a few hours, and then I do again. It's gotten to a stage where i think I might be becoming (or might have already become) an alcoholic.

Now I don't like disclosing my age on here much, but I'm only going to be 19 in a few months time. This is hardly a good start to a new year in my life. I'd love to just go to an AA meeting and get 'support', but, most of my social life revolves around going out and usually having some kind of alcholic drink in the process, and I quite frankly enjoy all the drinks I consume a lot just for their taste. Is there any hope, what should I be looking at doing? I've tried just not having anything, but I end up really wanting a drink after a while. Like real bad .

Bah. Alcoholism's fun. Everyone feels sorry for you and you get to peacefully mentally stumble off to sleep every night.

It does eat up a lot of money, though.

well, having a beer in the morning is on the slippery slope, watch yourself.

i set myself a time everyday, unless i am at a social event, i dont start until 7pm, as i know once i start, i wont stop till its gone or i fall asleep.

maybe try and set yourself a time to start. if you can do this and cut out the daytime drinking, you will prove to yourself that you dont need it, just happen to like it lots and lots.

Holy fuck, you're 19? I thought you were way older, like 40.. Haha, dude, forget about it.

Unless like everyone in your family is an alki and you might have a predisposition for alcoholism, it's not a big deal. So you like beer, whatever. I've drank at 10am too, probably before.

If you're so worried about it, you clearly identified it, so wean yourself off it. My uncle does that kind of stuff, but he drinks like half a case and passes out, only to do it over and over. And he's been doing it all his life, and denies he has a problem. THAT'S when it's bad.

If you were a few years older, and drinking whiskey in the morning it would be cause for concern, but a few beers in the morning for a teenager isn't that bad, I seriously doubt it's the start of a serious addiction. I have a friend that had stomach ulcers and liver failure at seventeen, as he drank so hard. Although drinking before and during work is just kinda pathetic more than anything else.

That sounds kinda like me, but with alcohol instead of pot.

As long as it's not effecting working then it's not too serious. I would try and quit the drinking before work, even though you may not think you do, you probably go to work smelling of beer and it isn't a good look.

I should close or move this thread for any number of good reasosns.

However i won't.Although my fellow mods may decide otherwise.

Toothless, if you don't drink for aweek do you want or need a drink?

There is a big difference between the two.

I'll explain.

Age 8 I discovered my parent's drinks cabinet. I had a mouthful of gin and suddenly i felt 'normal'...or at least what I assume everyone else assumes to be normal.

Basically for whatever reason (and there is no end of psuedo science on this) I am physically and mentally always a double scotch under par.

My body needs alcohol. Or rather put another way, I am addicted to alcohol, not to being drunk. Or yet another way of expressing it would be that I am physically but not mentally addicted to alcohol.

It gets real complex, cos basically there are as many types of alcoholic as there are people who drink.

I can (and did last year) drink a litre and a half of spirits a day for 6 months, everyday and then stop cold.

I stopped last year in August and all i have had since then is 2 glasses of champus at New Years. I will have another couple of glasses of champagne on the 16 of May (wedding Ann.).

I can stay dry literally for years (longest was 8 years) but there will come a day and on that day I will be straight back on the same dosage.

OK I'm rambling, I know.

What I'm trying to say is, don't worry about it.

Kinda like what Jack said for me...Do you want or need?

I look at my drinking habits sometimes and a couple bells start ringing in my head.

I work nights so my evening is everyone else's morning, so I drink after work.

I keep a bottle of vodka by my bed to help me sleep when I am finding it hard to drop off.

Sometimes I will kill a whole bottle in one morning and feel like shit at work.

But I know that if I don't feel like drinking I won't bother.

Sometimes I just want a drink as opposed to needing it.

If you can go without a drink for a while and not start shaking and feeling angry, you should be okay.

Use some of that knowledge you have about lifting weights and apply it to your own life. That's gives you a hell of a reason not to drink excessively. It works for me, anyway.

Can you drink yourself out of it? I usually only binge drink on Fridays or Saturdays or of course...both.

Last week I drank way too much - Well for me anyhow. 3 Days after I was still green around the gills. I may have been geniunely sick, but if it was a bug, it had that hang over feeling to it.

What I'm saying is, perhaps you should poison yourself just enough (with alcohol) that you won't want to touch it...at least for awhile.

But being how you think you are you might not want to do that, which if happens I'd say is a key indiacator that something needs to change.

My last time I got drunk was a very very very bad experience with a number of events that happened that night. I have never drank since that night its been about maybe 17 months now since I've been drunk. I have however had one drink occasionally throughout that time but never enough to get drunk.

Well I gave this a go (sorta) last night and feel like I'm going to die, and yes I'll probably have a pint when I meet up with my friend later . I just can't help myself.

"God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other."

And no, not because this is what the AA uses. It just fits perfectly.
