Am I really an idiot? -- (A very long story of mine that I want opinions on)
I have a girlfriend who currently lives thousands of miles away from me. Now before you decide to close this thread, assuming that I met her online, this is anything but that.
People, including my best friend, my parents, and even acquantances have been constantly discouraging me from staying in this relationship, and it saddens me quite a bit. Now I would like totse's opinion on the matter, and I will now share my story with you.
My life previous to my relationship, had been nothing but a disappointment. For my whole life, I was a fat, smelly, pimply nerd with glasses and a bad haircut. Nobody liked me. I had always wanted a girl, but never could get one. None had shown interest in me. Later on in my life, I really slimmed down, lost the glasses, and became more socially active. But still I always felt alone, even when I had some temporary friends by my side.
One day, I found out that my family had decided to move to New Zealand, since my dad got a job that required us to move there. I was the only one who was reluctant to move, since I didn't want my life to get any worse. After arriving there, I became very depressed. I lost my appetite for a very long time, which caused me to lose all my excess weight. Yet over time, my depression went away. I met new people and friends who actually appreciated me for who I am, and I quickly became a much more developed and cultured person. I also became more confident with myself. After six months of living there, I began eating normally again, and I felt really good with myself. Yet this whole time, no girls befriended me, and the ones I talked to didn't show any interest in me, even though nobody said I was ugly (earlier in my life, people thought i was fugly, and I indeed agreed with them). The whole time I went to school there, I had my eyes on this pretty girl with blue eyes and long black hair. To me, she was the most beautiful girl that I'd ever seen, yet she didn't look like some sort of clone, like most other girls do. She was pretty and she looked unique. But the whole time, I was too afraid to approach her, so in the meantime I just looked at her from afar.
At around June, I learned that there was going to be a school ball (basically a dance). Immediately, I felt that this was the perfect opportunity for me to meet this girl. I felt that if I didn't take this opportunity, I'd regret it, just like all the other opportunities that I never took in the past. I was finally able to approach the girl, and ask her to the dance. She seemed a bit shy at first, but she actually said yes, which was extremely amazing to me. For once, a girl didn't say no to me. Overjoyed, I was.
The ball was in a week, and we took this opportunity to get to know each other. It was splendid. We found that we had so much in common in every way. It was amazing to me. I felt more comfortable with her than I did with my best friend whom I left back in America. She and I were already talking for hours on the phone, and having conversations that weren't just meaningless bullshit.
The ball came, and it was a costume themed ball. I came dressed up as Charlie Chaplin, since I knew that she liked his films a lot, and she came dressed in a gorgeous old-style dress. Since it was a small school, I knew everyone that was there, and all my really good friends showed up. We had so much fun, and danced the night away. I never had so much fun with a girl before. In the last hour of the party came the time for slow-dancing. We slow danced for a very long time, among several other couples there who were slow dancing. The song Hey Jude came on, and our faces drew closer. Then, out of nowhere, she kissed me. She actually kissed me, which was beyond what I expected. We kissed for a very long time. By the time we stopped kissing, everyone was gone, and we were the only ones left in the place. It was the most wonderful night of my life, and I'll never forget it.
Since that day, I'd been spending most of my time doing things with her, and going to the beaches with her, which was our favourite thing to do. I spent many times over at her house, where we'd kiss and have fun for hours upon hours, and then have dinner with her parents. We had so many wonderful and incredible experiences with each other. We both knew we were very in love with each other.
The very end of the year was when my family and I were going to move back to america. Ironically, I was the only member of my family who wanted to stay. Not only had I made many good friends and lived in a nice area, but I'd found the girl of my dreams. I by all means did not want to leave.
Leaving her was the worst moment I ever had to endure. Our hearts were broken and ripped apart by having to say goodbye to each other. For months after I moved back to America, I was more depressed than ever. I moved back to the same town which I had lived in previously, but it didn't feel like my home anyway. It just felt like a fake town in the middle of nowhere, and I came back to the same school with the same assholes that always disliked me before.
The whole time, I was very sad over the loss of my Lady. People kept encouraging me to leave her, and move on to other girls. Now to make things more precise, I presently live in Southern California. The whole time I've lived in this place, I've come across nothing but uninteresting girls. Here, they are all clones of each other. They all wear the same stupid shit, their bodies all look the same and are skinny as hell, they are all whores, and are all equally stupid. I hate them all, and as much as I tried, I couldn't even begin to associate with them. So I decided to fuck it, and stick with my girlfriend, even though we were thousands of miles away from each other. We talked on the phone, sent each other letters, wrote emails, and talked on MSN. We kept in close touch.
The year dragged on, and finally she decided to come and visit me here in America. I was very excited indeed. It gave me something to look forward to.
Though talking over MSN and the phone made things different. Over time, we felt as if we weren't talking to the same people anymore, and because we couldn't see each other physically, we weren't sure if we'd get on with each other the same as before or love each other as much.
As soon as she arrived at the airport, we immediately realised that we still loved each other just as much, and over time, we discovered that we loved each other even more than ever. I took her out to eat, we went to the beach, and I took her to various attractions in California, such as Hollywood. We had a very wonderful time, but my parents would only let her stay for one week, and no more than one week. To this day, I still don't understand why they wouldn't let her stay longer. We felt very much in love after this.
After the week ended, I had to say goodbye at the airport, and we cried. Afterwards we both discovered that we didn't feel as bad as the first time that we had to seperate, and we agreed that now we know that we still love each other, we feel we have more to look forward to, so we don't feel as depressed. None the less, I still feel quite depressed. But what still adds to my depression are people who keep telling me that I should dump her, and move on to someone else. As much as I try explaining, people still don't think I should continue the relationship. I keep assuring everyone that both she and I understand the consequences, and are willing to stick it out until the day when we can both live with each other. That doesn't change anyone's attitude on the matter.
Since I've just turned 18, I am really interested in getting out of here. My parents were very strange around my Lady, and were harsh towards us, which ended up having us avoid them as much as possible. Well I'm to the point where I'm just sick of my parents, and I'm willing to do anything necessary to get out. I've talked to her parents many times before, and since she still lives with them, they said that they'd let me stay with them, and it wouldn't cost me anything, reguardless of the amount of time that I'd stay with them. They really came to like me a lot when I was there in NZ, so I guess they liked me enough to be this generous. So I'm really tempted to move to NZ and live with them for a while, once school ends for me in June. Flights to NZ cost a hell of a lot, but I'd have enough money by then, and because I'd have somewhere to stay for free, that would significantly save me money, and I'd be hoping that it'd be a one-way flight, because I really don't want to come back to America. NZ is the only home for me, and I don't feel that I belong in this place anymore, and I don't think I really ever belonged here. Once I theoretically get to NZ, I'd work a lot for a year or so, make a decent amount of money, and then start going to a University there, and hopefully get my own place to live, since I still feel bad just bumming out at her parents' place for free. Otherwise, I feel that moving back to NZ is the only way that I'll be truly happy.
-----------------
Okay, now what do you guys think? Do you think that I should continue my relationship with her? Do you think that I really am in love with her? Do you think my idea of moving to NZ is worth doing?

Re: Am I really an idiot? -- (A very long story of mine that I want opinions on)
It seems to be love as far as I can see. Good on ya mate. (Get used to saying "mate"!)
I'm not too keen on the idea of moving to the other side of the world but seeing as that's where your heart is, in more ways than one, go for it. You have a place to live and you're prepared to work hard. You seem to have it all planned.
All I will say is "What if"?
What if things go tits-up and love isn't what it was?
Plan for any possible eventuality you can see buddy.
All that said, good luck, have fun and keep posting.

Look man, if you like this girl so much then nothing should stand in your way.
By the way, if you got a degree in the trade (Plumber, joiner, electrician) they let you in NZ for free, becuase they're desperate for them.
But yeah, NZ girls are very cool.
Btw, read the karma sutra on the aeroplane. :P

consider if you'd still be happy there if you broke up. you don't want to be stranded somewhere and go into depression again if it all goes to shit. i'm not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic.

Re: Am I really an idiot? -- (A very long story of mine that I want opinions on)
go for it. not many people find the love that you two share, even in long distance relationships such as this one. i say go for it 100%, you two love eachother, and its so rare, go for it, if you dont, you will end up miserable.
edit, i wish something like this would happen to me too.

Actually it's real. =)
And yes, I've already started saving up money.
I really am not letting anything get in my way so far, but I just came here to ask for opinions out of curiosity, and to make sure that I'm not a complete lunatic.

For like a minute there I thought you were talking about I girl I went out with once. She lived here in Canada, and moved to N.Z and then moved back here, and she likes all those old movies and what not, but then it turned out, that you were the one who moved so I was wrong.

Re: Am I really an idiot? -- (A very long story of mine that I want opinions on)
Are you guys going to get married? Or do you have the attitude of just seeing how things work out?
I have a story that's kind of similar, except replace the girl with a boy and New Zealand with Scotland. We're not together anymore, and to be honest, I'm not sure if I'd do it all again because we broke up anyway...So I guess just try and make sure you guys are issue free if you do this, because that one little thing in the back of your mind that bugs you about her could be your downfall.
