I enjoy video games avidly... my girlfriend doesn't, though. She thinks it's a complete waste of time and isn't worth it because it isn't productive. She wants me to completely quit playing video games. Being the typical guy, though, I obviously can't stop completely. I can reduce the amount I play though. I'm trying to do that currently. But I don't think it's enough for her =/ I love playing games and such but quitting completely is too much.

Am I justified in telling her that if she doesn't respect the fact that I play video games, I could break up with her? Which one of us is being selfish? By the way, I am still talking to her and not ditching her for video games. It's just something I do when I'm at home and have nothing to do other than that. I also talk to her while playing.

Is it ethical that I stop completely or just drastically reduce the amount I play?

Okay, so I admit threatening to break up may have been too extreme... is there any way I can convince her that video games isn't that bad?

Part of enjoying time with someone is being able to enjoy the time apart from them.

I had a similar problem with my girlfriend. She didn't flat out threaten to dump me, but she'd whine whenever I would play WoW, but only because it meant that I wasn't paying 100% attention to her.

How did we solve it?

She got a trial account and understood the appeal of the game. I don't think she's going buy a full version, simply because she doesn't have the time for it. But she does understand the addictive quality of games (she started having WoW dreams, ffs) after this.

She views it less as a personal insult, but more of a "when Throm's raiding, I can't expect a full conversation from him."

Something that you might want to do then is to get her to play with you a little bit. Don't expect her to be as hardcore as you are, but if she has fun, she'll understand where you're coming from more and be reasonable.

If she can't even go to that length, then she isn't a girl worth keeping.

Hey thanks for all of the replies, I didn't think the topic would get this big already :-P But anyways, I think Euda's right about the fact that she thinks that she has taken a back seat to video games. Even today in class, I mentioned like, I dunno, like a sentence about video games then she gets all sad and such about it. I do care about her, but high school isn't such a great place to get so emotionally attached to someone...

Thromboembolic, that's a great idea and I have tried doing that (the Wii would be a great place to start that) but she's never enjoyed video games, and probably never will.

Then you said you talk to her while you're playing them. Assuming you don't mean over the phone, there's at least one other thing you could be doing: her.

I play games quite a bit when my girlfriend isnt around, whenever she wants attention i give it to her without question, but she knows it can get boring talking on AIM for hours at a time, she she doesnt mind when i leave to go play for a couple hours. She actually likes games to an extent, and occasionally when she comes over we'll play PGR3 or Gears of War or something together (she kind of goes against the norm for girls.. When given the choice between two games, say, some random cute cartoony game and something bloody and violent like GoW, she would choose Gears in a heartbeat) She loves it when I accidentally let her kill me with the chainsaw. The best part is we usually end up dropping the controllers and moving on to more...stimulating...activities after a few rounds

Well, I left something out. I didn't dump her completely for video games... it might seem weak but currently my focus should be on my studies right now. I'm taking an AP class right now and it's getting tougher so I need to catch up on the readings (I'm a sophomore in high school) and I don't want to deal with a girl who's trying to make me quit video games.

Nope, I live in Tucson and go to University High School. Surprisingly enough, it's a public school. I would say 90-95% of the sophomores are taking an AP class, whether it be AP European History, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB (I think or two kids take that) and AP Comparative Government. Not to brag, but my school is the only one that offers AP Comparative Government to sophomores... yet we are one of the best in the world :-P So yeah we're basically a bunch of nerds.

Me? Err, I have Counterstrike 1.6 but I don't really play it. I suck at FPSes anyway. The 'games' I was talking about was, sadly enough, N64 and GBA emulated games :-P
