Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Ok, so basically I've been friends with this girl for like three months, hanging out occasionally. Recently we've been hanging out a lot more and speaking on the phone for a couple of hours a day. I discovered a couple of days ago that I really like her, and I think she may like me to.
How should I go about taking the first step and avoid being banished into the "close friend" pit?
I'm sorry if this thread gets posted alot, but I think it's a little diffrent from the generic "I like a girl, should I ask her out?" thread. Since were already friends I really just can't ask her out just like that.
Also before anyone says it, YES, I am willing to take this step, even if it messes up our friendship in the future.
Sorry for possible rant...

If you're willing to take a step... Why not do it? Take her to the movies, kiss her. And ask her if she wants to do it again.

Might be too forward. Be careful with that one. Could result in a very embarrassing situation.
I think a gradual transition might be required. But it all depends on the situation.

Then don't just come out and ask her out, just say you wanna hang out and if you already hang out tell her you want to do it alone with her and if you already do that then make your move pussy.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
From the sounds of what you've said you have been hanging out a lot more lately, and communicating over the telephone, for up to two hours. To me that is a clue that she also likes you.. However, take it SLOW! you don't want a friendship ruined. Ask her if she would like to go to the movies ect. proceed to be friends, and see where it takes you.

And start doing things by yourselves, just you and her. Don't let any of her mates or yours tag along

Let it happen.
It shouldn't take much work.
Start hanging out together, preferably alone, as much as you can. Read her body language, use any opportunity to make it obvious that you're into her.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Ok, thanks for your advice. The bulk of you got the point, that I don't wanna move too quickly, but not too slowly either. I just got of the phone with her, where gonna hang out at my house tomorrow, watch a movie, just chill, me and her. If everything goes well, I will hopefully kiss her by the end of the night.
Thanks for your help everyone.
Peace out

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
When she comes over to your house, you should be waiting at the door with your erect cock angrily pointing straight up at her. If she comes in, you're in. If she leaves, you're not in.
Simple.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
I'm so glad that post wasn't another "how do I talk to this girl?"
You're at a very tricky moment.
I don't like being forward and asking do you wanna go out, but asking if you want to hang out and then making a move later down the line, that's cool.

Sweden.
I'm already talking to her on the phone still almost every day, sending messages several times a day, being kind of flirty, using the word "we" and pointing out how much we have in common all the time. I seem to be going forward.
We watched a movie toghether a couple of days ago, sat very close toghether, held eachothers eyes for long periods of time. I'm pretty certain something would have happened if my family wouldn't have interupted us all the time.
I'm hopefully seeing her again this weekend
Cheers!

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
If you do get pushed into the "just friends" zone, then push her into it too and be done with it. Don't treat her any more special that you would a friend that you have known that long. Either she will miss your attention and long for it and realize that she feels something for her, or she will just be another friend which frees you up for other people.

Next time you are alone, and relatively close together just let the conversation trail off while looking into her eyes.
If she maintains eye contact for 3 seconds, kiss her
Don't be shy

I'll try this, I suppose you mean the letting conversation end subtly, not stopping abruptly and just staring at her till she says like "wtf d00d?".
Although that would be rather fun... :P

Stop mid sentence, count to 3 seconds in your head. If she maintains eye contact and does not look away just kiss her. Don't wait for her to say "wtf d00d".
The average guy will go out on a date, and then go for the kiss at the end. Girls don't like this. You need to properly escalate touching or "kino" or whatever you want to call it, so that it happens naturally. That way the "kiss" will be no big deal, and you won't be awkward about it.
If you do not do something, she will eventually think to herself "why does he not kiss me." and she will think that's it's either because
a. you are inexperienced(don't know how)
b. socially awkward(shy)
Balls to the wall, you can either make the kiss natural (3 seconds) or you can make yourself look like a tool by making the entier situation awkward and waiting till you driver her home or some stupid shit like that.
Perfect moments don't happen, they need to be created. Which is what you are going to do

Bah, just come right out and ask. If she says no, then in all reality there is no way you would have been able to get into a relationship with her.

The way I see it, this is a bit of a gamble, either I pull it off, which would be totally great, or I blow it and everything goes to hell. Like you said, I need to improve the odds a bit by gradually making the setting and general feel more romantic and "touchy-feely".
But as stated before, this is pretty much balls to the wall, all or nothing.
I'm gonna go for this, hopefully everything goes right and I don't screw up. Wish me luck!
I'll def let you guys know how it goes. Any more advice?
Cheers!

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Now is the time. You have her right at the beginning of close friend. You have to jump off now or you will miss the stop.
At the beginning there is most likely attraction, but if you hold onto this position as close friend too long, some other guy will take her.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
I was just in a situation like that.
If you have a tv in your room rent a movie, since you haven't crossed the line to an actual relationship make it a comedy... Talladega Nights is a good one.
15 minutes into the movie slide your arm over her shoulder... Don't hesitate JUST DO IT. If she gets closer to you then you're in. Wait 5 minutes and do the whole 3 second thing.
If she shoots you down just play it cool, remember you are a duck and that rejection was the water running off your back.
yeah terrible metaphor I know.
Let us know how it goes.

Start flirting outrageously with her. If she just laughs then she considers you a friend. If she starts flirting back then immediately kiss her.

just tell her the way you feel. if she is worth having, she will accept it, and not think any differant of you after you tell her.
if she is a good friend, and she turns you down, she will keep being friends wiht you, and it will all be forgotten.
or, to avoid potential embarassment, you could just get wasted with her.

I'm hopefully seeing her this weekend, I'll play it based on how things turn out. There is also always the option to bring some alcy along the way, but since I'm underage, I probably can't get ahold of any on such short notive, plus she really isn't the fuckaound-alot type of girl.
I'll give you guys an update after I see her again, and things to all of you who are giving me advice, and to those of trying to shoot me down: I'll prove you wrong! :P

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Yeah I do. Odly enough even though I got rejected flat out. Probably did it wrong. Knew a girl for 2 and a half years. Other relationship stuff, just got out of. On dec 16th, long story over her. So we starting chillin solo, all that flirtin stuff. But yeah on new years I just plain asked her, said "i don't think thats a good idea." We're still really good friends. Akward for about 2 days til 4 of us got wasted at her house. We went skiing 2 days ago, going to a see a movie and dinner tonight.
Three points are to be received fromt his.
a) Don't make it to Balls to the Wall or you could end up in the same situation.
b) If she says no you can still be really good friends. Just push that whole rejection thing out of your mind. If she sees you next time after that with a frown, it'll end up bad. Slowly. She'll think your jsut friends for that reason.
c) If she says no, remain confident. Realize you have only known her 3 months, she may not be THAT comfortable with you yet. You still have a shot. Cuz I swear she likes me. But that could be my mind.
My tip: If it goes bad, just shrug it off. Or make it look like you shrugged it off. Water..ducks back...like the guy before me said.
I know mine was an if it goes bad, but everyone else hit the nail on the head with their advice, for the most part.

That's what I hope happen if this all doesn't work out exactly as planned.
I suspect the water-duck part, if it comes to that, won't be a problem. The reason: I've got very well pronounced sociopathic tendencies, which will make it a bit easier.
Just to clarify, I really like this girl, a thing that happens very seldom with me. But if I get rejected, I will end up shot down and a bit depressed for a day or two. After that I'll just stop caring for her in that way, but still as a friend. If more or less happend a bit over a year ago, diffrence from now was that we had known eachother since we were about 6 years old and that i didn't know how to handle a girl. It ended with me never getting the courage to take the step (note: I'm pretty sure that she didn't like me back)
and she making out and getting together with another guy.
Sorry for a bit of a rant, more advice, anyone?
Cheers!

i told him to go for it and ask her out, cos at the end of the day he said he wasn't that close mates with her so what the hell right? well.... a week later, he asked me out.

Hmm...
Right now I'm thinking about either rent a comedy (suggestions?) or just watching Fight Club. Seeing as she is pretty intelligent, she probably like Fight Club more, but what would be the best for my purposes?

Well. Long story. But I didn't wait two and a half years for it. Basically I had a year and a half relation ship, and a point where we barely talked. Then around august we started really hanging out together again. Then in december I broke up with my GF, and started to really hang out with her. I tooled myself in that way, yes. But it didn't come back to bite me in the ass because we had dinner and saw a movie last night where she was a complete flirt.
And I suggest Fight Club. That movie sounds like a guys movie by title which makes most women not see.(I did a survey for stattistics at my school on that movie. Yeah, I know it's a great movie, but would it suit my purpose? Well I think I'm going with it anyway, even if I don't get a chance to make a move, that movie will give us quite a bit of stuff to talk about, and because she'll probably enjoy it alot, it will show her a good time in my company, something not to be underestimated.
Also it didn't work out this weekend, her moms birthday is this weekend and I have to see a doctor about my back. I talked to her yesterday, we decided to do it next week instead.
Your advice is immensly helpful, keep it coming!
Cheers!

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Go see Children of Men. That movie is IMPOSSIBLE to make a move during. But after its like the flood gates open. You have 2+ hours convo topics on that movie alone. Watch it, get some food. Go back to your place or her place. Something like that.
When I saw it I tried to make a move the entire time, but it just doesn't happen. Even the happy parts are fucking depressing. Don't get me wrong this has to be the best movie I have seen in some time. It makes you think.
Plus if you can get close to her early, like within the first 20, you can be there for comfort when the fucked up shit happens.
First things first though, if you havn't call her and ask her how her mom's B-Day party was. Most females really like it when you inquire how they are doing, then include her mom AFTER so you sound like you care. If you would do that anyways you get the idea and don't need much advice. This comming week don't over spend time with her then you won't have much to talk about. Maybe coffee once or twice a week. And if you hafta go in for anything about your back later in the week, if it won't take to long ask her to come.
All the advice I can think of without knowing more about your life. Good Luck.
Cheers.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
I always end up in this same situations but to date it has never come out with me and the female friend together.
I just try and stay away from that friend zone if i think im going to gain feelings for the girl. I say if your really confident about this and you know she has some feelings for you, just go for it, the worst that could happen is she rejects your attempt but you can almost always go back to friendship.

If I can get ahold of it, I think I'll watch the movie you suggested, it seems very good. But since the movie is coming here sometime this summer and I don't have any dvd's to burn atm, Fight Club seems to be the most likely candidate. I think this movie will work well for the same reasons that Children of Men will, plus it has a great (or at least decent) "make-a-move" moment right at the end.
As for asking about her mom, yes I already figured that one out, haven't called her yet 'cuz it's to late here, will do tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

I am not 100 % sure if she really like's me, but I'm kinda sure she thinks of me as more than a friend, if you get what I mean. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, it was much needed :P

I didn't read anything else, but I wouldn't say it's a pit. More like a close friend area, meaning it's not impossible to get out of. Many times my relationship progressed to close friends, and I was stuck waiting for them to make a move. No need to be impatient, but don't be like these guys.

In my experiance it's pretty darn hard, if not impossible to get out of the pit, or the "area" as you call it. Either way, this is the way I hope it ends, if I fuck up that is.
Still, kepp it coming, one can not get to much advice.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Ok, just got off the phone with her, we've now decied to see Fight Club at the end of the week. Before now, I hadn't talked to her for a couple of days, strangeley enough she seemed alot more flirty today, laughing at whatever exits my mouth (hey, I'm good, but no one is THAT good).
She is calling me back a bit later, anything I should bring up?
Any other pointers are welcome as usual.
Cheers!

If you do get pushed into the "just friends" zone, then push her into it too and be done with it. Don't treat her any more special that you would a friend that you have known that long. Either she will miss your attention and long for it and realize that she feels something for her, or she will just be another friend which frees you up for other people.
That there is some damn good advice, though I think it's a little easier said than done. Still very good advice though.
I am sorry to report that the OP's situation is not one that you don't have to deal with when you get older.
I find myself in a similar position. I am very interested in going out with one of my closest friends.
The twist here is that before she became such a close friend, she was my GF. A couple of months after we broke up, we started to hang out a lot and spent hours in IM [She's deaf so the phone is right out]. We have become closer and better friends than we were when we were going out together.
I never really stopped loving her and over the summer realized that I wanted to be back with her again.
She does know how I feel about her and is ok with it. She has said she just wants to see were time takes us - and so far it has taken us even closer.
But she is [still] not ready to be back in a relationship. But as long as things are progressing I am content. I have enough patience.
I do still worry sometimes a little that I could end up struck in the friend zone. But I'm banking on the fact that since I was already in the 'Winner's Circle' - for lack of a better term - once before, it should be much easier for her to return to it than to have to make the leap from friend to more-than-friends like she would had we not been together already.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Told you. IF you just take a few days it makes you think about the other person a lot more. To long makes it seem like you're avoiding them. Id say unless you have plans today or tomorrow with her. Just don't do anything but call her tomorrow night and see how she is doing that. That is is. Don't plan to talk for hours on hours, but if you do thats fine. Just call to see how she is doing.
Then ask her cake or pie. It'll be random and either start off a stupid convo or convo about cake or pie. Which everyone likes one or the other. If you don't, I will hunt you down and feed you to small blue jays.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Ok, just finished speaking with her. Basically what happened was, that for quite a bit of time we talked about trust and caring about eachother. She first said that I was one of the few people she really cares about and that she think she can really trust. So, I kinda said the same thing back to her, except with a bit more spice, that I would really miss her if she went on a long trip, that I didn't want anything bad to happen to her. She agreed and took it up further, and stated that I really was the only guy she talks to on the phone. She also seems really eager to see me at the end of the week.
Totse, I think my chances just improved!
Meta, that is an intresting tactic, but I'm saving it as a plan B.
Cheers!

Well it's not quite bunny.meatballs (if that was his actual username... I forget...), but I'm still interested.
Make sure to post and let us know how it goes. For what it's worth, I'm rooting for you.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
There was a really long thread (and I mean really long) with him as the protagonist, about how he liked this girl but couldn't muster up the nerve to approach her etc... People were following his progress like some weird sort of TV soap...
A lot of other people here will remember it I guess.
Anyways... I don't actually remember how it all ended. No doubt someone will remind me.
But yeah, Good luck and godspeed.

Re: Need help turning a friendship into a relationship
Well I can't really say anything useful that hasn't already been said, but I will say this...
You should try and get it finished, one way or the other, as soon as possible. the longer you leave it, the more possibility there is for things to get messed up.
That's about it. Not exactly fortune cookie material I know, but true nonetheless. Hesitation = Bad.

I totally agree with you, it's the waiting and hesitaion that usually screws you over.
