Killing the need for love
Yea, I know, something completely different, whereas others are looking for love, I'm wondering if its physically and mentally possible to kill the want/need for love and affection? If its possible, how does one achieve that?

Re: Killing the need for love
I can be done, but usually through some form of dramatic physical or mental event. This being the complete breakdown of your mental stability through being betrayed, abused, etc. Or just start doing a shit ton of drugs till your mind is no longer capable of higher thought.

maybe if you meditate for 10 years nonstop and stare at a cave wall.
Or maybe if you travel on a pilgrimage to china and join a shaolin temple to become a kung-fu master.
or maybe if you become a benadictine monk

You can achieve it yeah, but it generally takes a huge tramitic event to happen for someone to stop having the feeling of affection.

Become a buddhist or something, or become a heroin junky: when you have a good junk habit, all you care about is scoring more.

QFT... Buddhism emphasizes on moderation and patience. With this you could obtain the discipline required for controlling urges. You could possibly control your brain chemistry to turn it off completely.

Re: Killing the need for love
Yeah I'm on the same mission myself. I don't think it's possible. You can maybe put a damper on it by realizing that love is only temporary and that all the people who believe in it and seek it are chasing a non-existent goal.
I normally have so much more to say on the topic but right now it isn't coming to me.
Love is counterproductive - Pretty much sums it all up.
(On the flip side, it does kinda make life more interesting, so I dunno).

Re: Killing the need for love
Requiem for a Dream made me more careful about my drug use (but didn't stop me altogether).
Kids made me more careful about unprotected sex (but also didn't stop me altogether).
While both of these movies have a quite powerful message, eventually it wears off (at least for me it did...).

Re: Killing the need for love
quote:Originally posted by Nikkuh:
Yeah. It's called Heroin. Try being addicted for 2 years strait.
Then tell me if you were interesed in sex during that peroid of time.
A friend of mine still steadily addicted to the substance once told me it was the super long sex sessions whilst on heroin that kept him and his girlfriend together for so long.
That and they're intense love-affair with the drug itself.
As for destroying the need for love, I'm not sure that it is, neurochemically speaking, possible. Love, or more specifically lust, is a result of the body's addiction to dopamine (see also: cocaine, chocolate, runner's high, or pretty much anything the body finds rewarding or pleasurable.) What this means is that your body is pretty much predetermined to be inclined towards the freaky-deaky, and that all hope for completely erradicating it from your natural makeup is an unachievable aspiration.
In fact, if it's just lust that you're after, and not the easily equivocated cousin love, than every act of aquiring the lust will make the next high harder to obtain.
Love, on the contrary, requires less effort, and becomes a much higher higher, assuming that it is with the same partner.
The difference rests in the chemical used in each oft-confused big L.
Lust=dopamine (neurotransmitter, synapses, reward, hooray.)
Love=Oxytocin (hormone, everywhere, helps immune system, fights depression, etc. etc. etc.)
What makes these two so easy to confuse is that we live in a world that draws a very powerful link between sex and love, hence the forum you're currently frequenting sex & affection. Oxytocin is a hormone released at different times, child birth for example, to bond the two experiencing the hormone and allow for a better life (genetically assuming the two shall give birth some day), Oxytocin is also released during orgasm, but only in very small amounts, and is released much more thorougly during foreplay
Especially the nipples. For obvious reasons.
What's released intensely during orgasm is Dopamine, and immediately afterwards Prolactin which is a chemical the body secrets to suppress the flow of reward, reward, reward from the dopamine. Which is the reason men can't have sex immediately following orgasm.
Which is also the reason that most of us haven't fucked ourselves to death.
In increasing trials of solely seeking dopamine, the aforementioned state of needing more dopamine to obtain that same high comes in, but the same amount of prolactin keeps shooting down our high. Which is why most people bent on fucking to prove their love usually fall out of love as quickly as they fell into it.
So I guess what you could get from all of this is the closest way to kill your need for love would be to flood your system, somehow, on a constant basis with prolactin. I'm afraid you'll find this won't destroy your need for human emotional bonding and contact, it will just make you a prude.
My advice would be to, rather than trying to kill your need for love, find a different way of expressing it.

I'm not going to even bother quoting that whole thing but DAMN your good. Its almost tempting to save your post for my own files, but the portion I quoted, I think I'm going to do. Find a different route to express it or something. Thanks

Fuck heroin all together, I mean look what it did to those people!! I've never done it myself and it's not like I'm saying, "Drugs are bad, mmmkay?" But I think any substance that can cause that level of dependance should be avoided. Who wants to end up with their whole life revolving around a drug? I understand that the movie was an eggaggeration, but...Just look at all of the crack whores out there. Those people didn't start out like that, the drugs brought them down, or their addiction was the culprit.
And why not just snort the heroin if you're going to do it?

Oh I'm loving myself, as of now, I am doing really great, I'm on my own and supporting my way through life at the young age of 19, and I'm still going to be able to afford college. (Hopefully I'll start in the summer or the fall). I have little stress in my life, and I can afford a lot of stuff. Basically, I'm living the American Dream really.
Only thing bugging me is all this shit.

Re: Killing the need for love

What's exaggerated? Except, maybe, the hallucinations suffered by the pill-popping mom, but I viewed that as more of a metaphor for the importance she was putting on things of insignificance, and the frattered way she was going about taking care of anxiety-ridden herself.
Aside from that I've seen some sickly discolored veins, people doing many sexual things for it, big time deals getting fucked up and screwing up relationships between people who had nothing to do with it, people becoming prostitutes, and of course people getting arrested and missing their momma. Add to that the aids problem of dirty needles, among other things, and the movie often pales in comparison to reality. Until you start getting really big up there and lose feeling for other people, then it's a whole different game.
Oh, and most people start by snorting it. Seems harmless for some reason. And heroin is addictive because of the release of endorphins; just like morphine; just like oxy contin (not to be confused with the oxytocin I was talking about earlier); just like percocepts (Oxy codone)
etc. etc. etc.

http://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum5/HTML/247389.html
If alcohol is a drug, then my life pretty much revolves around it.
Although, not to the extent that I have seen some crack or heroin addicts get involved with it. So I guess I'm lucky like that.
And yeah, I love heroin (and other similar drugs, opiates/opioids/painkillers/etc), and I actually really like crack (other than the long-term effects it has on me, and my wallet), so I tend to avoid them out of fear of getting hooked.
Alcohol is much more socially accepted anyway. Plus it is more readily available, and not illegal.
So if I have to stick to any substance, it'll be alcohol.
And when I do heroin, I usually do just snort it (or sometimes smoke it).
But really, the needle is supposed to make it just that much more intense, which is why it is often the next step. If there was a way that I could make myself drunker, faster, (without injecting large quantities of alcohol into my veins) I would probably try it out.

Hard to say, you know it really starts to hut when you know that love is counterproductive, unexistant, and a relationship wont last longer than a few months, but yet you feel a need for it. Makes you look stupid for yourself.

I don't look for relationships, sure I might find somebody attractive or whatever, but I wouldn't let it stay on my mind. I've been like that for quite a while now. Mebbe a year and a bit...
I'm not interested in it, I used to be but I just seperated myself from it.

I have an idea! Daily use of oxytocin nasal spray would probably work. It costs like $15 a bottle.
EDIT: It's $28 with shipping to the US. Anyone that wants to know where to buy it email me at johnshotmailaddress at hotmail dot com

I'm tired, but this sounds vaguely familiar. I'm not sure if it was a joke, or a highly unproductive supplement. Oxytocin must pass through the blood-brain barrier, and only injections through the skull succeeded in any worth-while trials in rats.
In any event that's the opposite of what he's asking.
