What is a Valentine?
I mean, obviously I know the concept of Valentine's Day and so forth... but I don't know what to get. I've never had anyone to give a Valentine to before, so my experience with the practice is limited to those boxes of 24 cheesy little cards you buy and then give to everyone in your class in 3rd grade.
So... for someone who matters a lot to you, is your official partner and has been for a while, etc., what to get? Box of chocolates, flowers, teddy bear? And what kinda card? Maybe I should make my own in Photoshop, being a little talented there? But what to put on it... Help me, someone!
Edit: And of course, this person is a she.

Don't do the photoshop thing. I know a guy who loved his girlfriend so much and she sat me down one day and told she'd dumped him because he didn't care about her enough to buy her a Valentine's day card. She assumed he'd forgotten to buy one and made one up in photoshop a hurry to compensate. He was devastated. Oh, yes.

Wow. I'd assume that most people would be able to see that making one involves more care and effort than buying one... buying takes 5 minutes, making a nice card takes hours. Maybe she's just weird

Few dozen is a bit pricy, just one will do. Plus, you don't want to come across to strongly or look like your desperate.
One red rose with a short message that will make her smile. Don't try to be too funny though, because the funnier it is, the more unfunny it'll be if she doesn't laugh.

Heh, that's true. Thanks... my plan is now: 1 card, made by me (or possibly not); 1 (or a single dozen?) red rose; and... well, that's it so far.

She isn't fat, greedy, or a bitch, so I think I'll pass on this one. :P I dunno, maybe delicious delicacy would be good...

If those are your best suggestions . . . they're all horribly cliche and you're better off ingnoring valentines day entirely.
Make a card but don't do it in photoshop. It doesn't matter if you can draw or have neat writing. Write a note in it that's more than a few sentences.

Those are actually good. Because they're funny, and now that you're not in third grade anymore they've become ironic.
Besides that, don't think of it as 'valentine's day' think of it as any other gift giving occaisson. Get her something she actually might want.
Tickets are always good. Get her tickets for an event you can attend together and will both enjoy.

Sorry, it's just me being bitter because I don't have a girl now.
Maybe you could give her a valentines card and a photoshoped one. That way you've covered both bases and giving her something you had to put time and effort into.
I'm crap with gift ideas though, I'm just throwing it out there.

Re: What is a Valentine?
Flowers, chocolate and teddy bears with cheesy messages on them are typical Valentine's Day presents. Oh, and a card. Can't go wrong with a romantic date either. Generally though, just some flowers, a cute card and cozy evening together is a perfect valentine's day.

Re: What is a Valentine?
Red roses are good, but so are white.
White can look much more beautiful and they have some other random meaning which I recall being good and cutesy.
Make sure it's a nice rose=[ Ask for grand or dutch roses, they cost like £3-5 in England at valentines. So, uh, $8?
Oh, don't go waltzing up to the florist on valentines day an hour before you go see your girlfriend. It makes people like me want to slit your throat, you'll get the caggy left over roses, if any. Last year, all our roses were either ordered, reserved or sold by noon on Valentine's.
/rant
This is a long shot, but I know a lot of girls my age have charm bracelets which they keep charms on from special occasions and junk. So, if you know she has that, get her a charm for it, you can get some really cute heart shaped ruby or heart locket ones. Tie it on to the ribbon on the rose, with your card behind it holding it off the rose.
It is not a stupid gay idea and I'd be uber touched and all "oh how sweet and thoughtful". Or earrings or something.
Valentines isn't an occasion to warrant a real reeeal piece of jewellery, I don't think, that's more of an anniversary thing.
Hmm, can you buy those pretty hand made cards in America? Those are sweet.
I'd like the single rose, heart charm & a nice date or something. But I'm not your girlfriend.

huh. i would've suggested doing that, because should he do a superb job on the card, it would appear that he cared enough to spend some time on it. are you sure the friend didn't just use some card creator or something of the sort? i dunno.
maybe get a small stuffed animal, contort it so its cluctching a single rose, and give it to her. the card here would be up to you.
oh, and i'm buying my g/f handcuffs among other things, if you wanna start down that path so soon.

Re: What is a Valentine?
Simple, if your serious enough
A Teddybear
12 WHITE Roses(They seem to mean more to women and most women prefer white roses over red ones)
And Jewelry of some sort.(Put the jewelry in a box so that the teddy bear can "hold" it so when you give)
If that doesn't show you mean it..nothing short of proposing to her on Valentines day will lol.

Re: What is a Valentine?
To all the people who are suggesting white roses...
As far as I know, white roses are traditionally linked with death/funerals/mourning. Which is why they usually have yellow roses at weddings.
I don't know, it's probably and old fussy thing which most girls won't know or care about.

Re: What is a Valentine?
A photograph of you cutting out the heart of her worst enemy.
Nothing says "I Love You" like capital crime.
Suprise her by surrounding your bed in scented candles and dousing both of you in gasoline.
"I'm gonna love you for the rest of our lives, honey."
Get a pal to phone her and say that you were killed in a road accident.
Lie in wait and suprise her from the backseat of her car as she rushes out to drive to the morgue.
It's the screams that count.

I think I am going to:
-get her some of her favorite flowers (she doesn't like roses)
-get her a box of her favorite chocolate (cliche, but she got a box for Christmas and her aunt ate them all )
-get a card, of course, and
-maybe a CD from her favorite band.
Whaddaya think?

Re: What is a Valentine?
Get her something that means something to her. Spending £50 on roses won't mean as much as spending £1.50 on her favourite type of flowers. And that's applicable to anything. Make it something meaningful to her, not something generic. Make a mental note of things she says she likes or wants, and surprise her with them months later. Doesn't need to be for any special occasion; try giving gifts a few days before Valentine's day
EDIT: Never buy something just for the sake of buying a gift. And if you want to get her a CD from her favourite band, why not try to get a signed one or an old demo or something? As long as it's not a huge band, if you sent them a letter asking for autographs for your girlfriend, who's a huge fan, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to sign them. You've got a while, it's worth a shot and she'd love it.

Re: What is a Valentine?
you'd be supprised, I can't speak for everyone, but It TRULY is the thought that counts. I know, I know, corny as HELL. A sweet, caring, romantic gesture that shows you love her is what you're looking for. As I said, I can't speak for every girl, because there are some who want a mansion filled to the rafters with red roses for valentine's day. But you should (lol corny) just think about what she really likes, or thinks is romantic and sweet.
good luck!

Either go with lots or one rose. A half dozen makes you look cheap. One means you are thinking of her and are somewhat reserved.

Re: What is a Valentine?
I LOVE Valentine's day. Even when I don't have a "Valentine." I think it's bullshit to have a day to tell people you love them, but I love giving out those little cards you buy for elementary school Valentine's parties and giving candy to my friends. The romantic aspect... eh. I'd be happy with a rose, but I'd be happier if I got a rose on a random day.
