Plan B OTC in America!
As of November 2006 it will legal for women over the age of 18 to buy the emergency birth control over the counter for $25-$40.
This is great, but we have to push for it to be legal for anyone to buy it, not matter how old. Actually, I think this would benefit the younger people moreso than those over 18. The only time I had to use emergency BC was when I was 15 - which fortunately led me to start on the pill.

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
it will encourage underage sex, and increase the risk of STI's as stupid cunts will use the over the counter emergency birthcontrol pill as a method of contraception, even though its not meant to be used if possible (but since when have young people knwown shit about that kind fo thing). so all in all its a bad thing. but kind of a good thing if it will stop vicky pollard's getting pregnant. Also how is this relevant to S&A, i think its more SG

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
Good News indeed!
However it must be made available to all (girls AND boys)confidentially on demand at all ages.
Also it should be actively promoted and its use explained in schools (not that that will ever happen of course!)
NO one is more Pro Life than me but I would have Plan B on sale at 7-11's and Gas Stationseverywhere. NO excuses for abortion any more.
And those who bleat
"oh but what about side effects? Surely it must only be sold by responsible chemists!"
Hell, tylenol kills more people a year than Plan B ever will...

I don't see how this will 'encourage underage sex' at all. If available to the underaged, it will combat the most noticeable and life-destroying effect, pregnancy.
Besides, one can't control the libido of young people at all, I don't see why a contigency plan has to wear the blame.

That is the stupidest thing.. a step forward but still stupid.
It'd be like requiring ID for condoms.

How the FUCK will it encourage underage sex?
"Oh, now if our condom breaks, we can go spend 40 bucks!"
It's not as if the prospect of a condom breaking has ever stopped me.
This is great, especially for rape victims like it says.

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
Here in aus it is available OTC at a chemist for over 16 year olds.
1. Take your Christan views else where, people have and like sex, deal with it.
2. It has not promoted underage sex, it is merely a back up. For a girl to get the pill she has to be assessed by the chemist to make sure she understands that the pill is not to be used more than it has to be, my sister bought two in one year and the chemist had to have a talk to her about it.

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
Of course it will encourage underage sex. Are you people fucking retarded? You think less people started having underage sex once latex condoms or any form of birth control became relatively cheap and effective?

Got a link that backs that up? Couldn't it be that it has no bearing at all, and that people will fuck regardless?
What the hell is "underage" sex, anyway? Under what age? Under 18 (as if it's some heinous act)? Under the local age of consent?

Got a link that says you have a carpet in your house? No? Oh, right, you can use common sense to figure that out.
Also, it would be damn near impossible to get statistics on this sort of thing from when before condoms became widespread.

When did I say sex among those below 18 was a heinous act? Oh, that's right, I didn't.
Do you honestly think there was as much underage sex when there was absolutely no reliable way to prevent pregnancy? I sincerely doubt it, because people were not that stupid.
Also, do you know why I am 100% certain this will give a rise to underage sex? Because I know that this is one more reason for me to have sex before I'm legally an adult, because it makes the worst possible consequence of recreational sex(pregnancy) that much less possible.

First.
Promoting underaged sex.
So like it's bad to tell people that there are airbags, because then it tells people that it's okay to crash into things.
Oh sorry, I can no longer teach you about the laws of the US, because you know, then you might think you can break them.
I hope you are thinking right now
"Fuck, I am an IDIOT for saying that."
Secondly think about if you were raped. Normally, you could tell someone. But no, it was from someone in your household. Telling someone would lead to you being severly beaten. You can't get to planned parenthood or a doctor, so you go to CVS, say you are getting something else and buy yourself plan b. THINK ABOUT HOW THEY WOULD FEEL IF YOU TRIED TO BAN IT.
Thirdly.
How would this fit in SG.
This is about SEX and affection.
Plan B is about emergency contraception pill.
Which is used after SEX.
Got it?

So you're saying most of this forum has no common sense? The conclusion you drew from your analogy is flawed. I don't need any proof to find out the state of my floor. Others can determine it by asking me, essentially a poll including only 1 person. To find out if a group of people have carpet in their houses, you'd have to ask all of them. That would be where the link comes in.
Saying something is "common sense" when it could be statistically proven or disproven is a horrible argument. The onus is on you to provide positive evidence (such evidence would be readily attainable if it existed), otherwise you're just making a ridiculous assumption.

If it isn't a bad thing, then why would you talk about it with such a negative diction and tone?

Actually, it wouldn't be readily attainable. Getting information on sexual statistics before and after a major contraception became widespread and cheap would be damn near impossible actually, especially when considering the major ones(condoms and the pill) came out quite a long time ago.

I know you weren't addressing me specifically, I feel I should respond to what you said.
No, it's not bad to tell people about airbags, and doing so is not going to tell people that it is "okay" to crash. However, you must admit, that it is almost certainly going to make people more comfortable driving because they now feel safer, and that the more people feel comfortable about something, the more people that are going to do it. It's common sense.

You see, I just have a problem with people saying something that I believe to be 100% false(IE, this wont lead to more underage sex).
I have absolutely nothing against those not considered adults having sex, even before marriage, and I feel that this OTC Plan B stuff is great news. For the record, I'm a unitarian, not some desert monotheist.
I just think that the natural evolution of this though is more young people having sex. But my main point is "So what?".
I think the people who have a problem with this from some point of "Christian morality" need to be challenged on their own out of line sense of "morality", not on this OTC Plan B supposedly not causing more young people to engage in sex(which they find immoral and thus is the point, but I agree with the Christians in that this will cause more underage sex, I just think this isn't immoral).
However, I am also extremely hesitant about allowing this to be bought by 16 year olds. I am not sure if this should be a right held by the legal guardian since a 16 year old is still a minor. I am simply not sure, but I am leaning towards this being only available to minors with guardian approval. I feel the right of the parents overrules those of the child in this case.

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
Byss. I agree that allowing unrestricted access to the MAP will indeed cause a slight rise in underage sexual activity. No question about that.
However if it also leads to a dramatic fall in the abortion rate then personally i think it is a price society can accept.
Although as far as I am aware so far here in EUrope land this hasn't been the result.

Re: Plan B OTC in America!
jackketch, I am curious. On what ground are you against abortion, since I am almost certain you aren't a God-fearing man...
Also, if it is from a particular moral point, I was almost certain that the morning after pill basically performed a very early abortion by providing a super-high dosage of what's normally in a regular bc pill, and that this can only be taken after fertilization...

You might be wrong. Actually I am fairly devout....God and i just don't get on most of the time.("I still believe in God, He no longer believes in me").
I also assume that the MAP is a form of abortion but its still at the stage where one might realistically describe the 'baby' as a bunch of cells...if even that.I take the rather simple view that as soon as the heart beats its a human being and killing it is murder and doctors who perform it should go to the chair.
As violently pro-life as i am, personally i feel it(the MAP) is the best compromise going.I wish my fellow pro-lifers would see it that way too

Lol, did you not read the thread?
He's saying RU486 is going to become the new condom, and stupid ass 15 year olds are gonna be like "Well it doesn't matter anyway, because we can get the morning after pill!"
$30 is not expensive, just ask half the teenage stoners on here that drop $20 on a bag of weed every few days.
We need to drop the demonization of sex, and reset laws to 16, and educate teens better. At 16, you're close enough to an adult to know what the hell you're doing with your genitals. As said, they're gonna do it anyway, at least make sure they aren't making stupid decisions.

I'm sure they'd probably me more willing to drop money into less expensive condoms, but in retrospect I do now see how this would lead more (probably underaged) individuals into performing more UNPROTECTED sex. I don't think this would entirely increase the amount of underaged sex in general, because as has been said by nearly everyone, teens are going to go at it anyway, with or without the morning after pill. I could see, however, how this would lead to more 'I don't need a condom because we've got the morning after pill' idiocy.
I'm not sure about changing the age of consent, but more sexual education would probably go a long way to reducing teen pregnancy, etc.

Pro-life beliefs and the morning after pill should be mutually exclusive because the morning after pill does not exterminate pregnancy. It only works if the woman is not ALREADY pregnant. Therefore, no life is being destroyed by using Plan B.
Anyone interested can learn about how it works HERE (http://tinyurl.com/ej6p3).
