Suicide
Well, today in class, a friend approaches me and tells me that a friend (I will name him X for reference) of his is contemplating suicide. He tells me how X broke up with his gf a year ago, then got back together, then split again. X has been feeling depressed for months, and i have noticed that X has been acting kind of depressed for a while.
My friend also recieved a suicide note from X recently.
I advised my friend to ask him(the contemplater) if he was serious about suicide, and if so tell someone.
The problem for me is that if he does commit suicide, I am going to feel like shit for not advising my friend to help X in the right way.
So, S&A, what are your thoughts?
Much appreciated.

Re: Suicide
When it gets to that point, it's really hard to save someone like that.
The best thing you can do is show him that he's not alone at the end, and join him in a grand suicide pact.

Re: Suicide
Ahh yes good ole suicide....A permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Personally it sounds more like a cry for help and not like he's really going to do it.You could try answering his cry for help in a non-judgemental way. Meh sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: Suicide
You could try telling his gf about it.
Note: That will either help him completely or backfire and he will do it for sure.
So, are you a gambling man?

Re: Suicide
I dont know who the gf is. I was just told the basic info.
I really dont know if it is a cry for attention or what, but if i had to make a list of people i know that would commit suicide, he would be in the top 20.
He isnt emo or anything, he is a pretty smart kid in advanced classes.

Re: Suicide
Advise your friend to have a serious conversation with him about it. Now.
However rough his life seems at the moment, it will change; chances are that it will change for the better.
Why would you advise anything else?

Re: Suicide
If he wrote a suicide note and is still alive, it's most likely a cry for attention.
Give him too much attention. He'll get tired of it and quit bitching.

There is something awfully romantic about cheating fate, no? The one final act of defiance in a world where you do nothing but lose. A final triumph against the universe.

Re: Suicide
OP, sit down with him and ask him nicely to show some consideration for others.
Please remind him that someone will discover the body and probably have to clean up his mess.So it would be a kindness if he could choose a 'clean' method.
Anyone who has had to scrub blood stains and brain matter off a wall will understand my point.
Also impress upon him that a clearly written suicide note, with good grammar, helps protect other innocent people from wrongful arrest.

This could be the case. However, no mater what the case is you need to talk to him, it will probably greatly help the guy

DO NOT talk to him. Call the police. They'll arrest him and take it from there.

Re: Suicide
First we gonna ROCK, Then we gonna ROLL
Then we let it POP, DON'T LET IT GO
X gon give it to ya
He gon give it to ya
X gon give it to ya
He gon give it to ya
Is your friend X actually DMX?
That would be hardcore.
Seriously though, just go with what Euda said. It's most likely a passing phase. I highly doubt he has that much shit to deal with.
It's probably being blown out of proportion. I'm probably the most likely to commit suicide out of anyone I know (although people around my age don't usually consider it), yet I never talk about it in real life. Although I still keep on keeping on, because I know for a fact that it could always be worse (In fact it's been worse).
He just needs to keep at it until things get better (or he could try helping himself and improving his life on his own as best as he can).

Re: Suicide
Actually come to think of it, I should be able to give more advice...
I used to be really suicidal back in 2005. I was even hospitalized for telling my psychiatrist that I would rather kill myself than quit drinking (among other things).
And at the time, I didn't want anyone to talk to me about it. At least not any friends or family, that would just make it embarrassing.
If he's actually serious, then he probably wouldn't be mentioning it.
Oh, and don't suggest suicide hot-lines. I called one once and they actually made it worse.
The only thing that helped me was to realize on my own, that I have the ability to improve my life, and to look at things in a brighter light.

I'm going to disagree with MLOR here. I'd advise X's parents and let them take it from there.
Its my belief by calling the police, you could actually be making the situation worse, and thus delaying what will soon become inevitable.
Notify the parents, now. Hopefully they'll take the proper action.
Suicide is usually a loaded gun situation.(no pun intended). It can go both ways, after having helped people prevent suicide, observed the attempt and hearing of the success soon after, well, its a flip coin situation. "heads you win, tales you going to lose"
Best of luck.

Re: Suicide
i think this "X" fellow is a little bitch because he/she would not write suicide notes, he/she wants attention that his/her GF used to give him/her, he/she is looking for fucking attention.
Be a good friend and sit down with him and a quiet place, ask him/her what is going on.
Let him/her speek his/her mind, when he/she is done, you should unexpectedly back hand him/her to the face, and put him/her in a choke hold.
Tie his hands and rape him/her
treach the bitch not to seek attention claiming shit like suicide, thats not funny.
