Default Do clothes really matter/make an impression?

My question is do clothes really help your appearence and make a better impression on girls? Maybe it's a silly question, I dunno.

I've been wearing the same shit, like forever. My wardrobe consist of T-shirts (lots of gray t-shirts), and jeans, and I usually throw either my gray sweatshirt (which I've had forever) or my black sweat shirt over it. I don't really wear collared shirts, although I have some. I have 1 pair of khakis but I need to get some more. I also have 1 pair of white nikes that I wear everyday.

So I'm asking what should I do to change it up? Everyone tells me I wear the same shit everyday and a couple of my friends who are girls offered to take me shopping. Even my best friend said I should wear a collared shirt, everyone would say how I look better.

Should I get some more t's? Get another zip up hoodie or jacket? I don't want to try and dress like someone I'm not. I don't like that.

I kind of feel weird changing my appearence b/c I feel like jeans/t-shirt/gray sweatshirt is my signature look. Just cause I've been wearing it forever.

Help me Revamp my wardrobe TOTSE! It's 2007 and a new year. Time to make a change (..or maybe not).

From my expericence, yes, clothes are a huge deal. All in all, if the girls are offering to take you shopping, and they are the kinda people you want to be with, its a good idea to let them choose what they think looks good on you. If you just want to look good overall, wear polos/ a good pair of jeans and shoes, yeah, its a lil more on the preppy side if you want it to be, but its universally accepted and dressing well. I know it might feel weird at first, but you'll get accustomed, and when you finally realize that people are actually acttracted to you, wearing those clothes will actually make you feel good. Sounds silly now, but you will thank me later, I promise .

of course they matter!

I advise you swing on over to Reinvent Yourself and check out the "Bond, James Bond" thread. I posted in it with almost the exact same question ("I'm an average target-brand jeans-and-a-tshirt guy and I want to look goo,d how do I do it?") and there were a TON of good replies.

also, check out:

and the fashion section of www.askmen.com (http://www.askmen.com)

ignore the crap about suits, but there's a lot of great stuff there.

It depends what kinda girls you want to get, but in all situations yes, clothes matter.

Just get a few more tshirts, some plain normal shirts and jeans and you're all set.

I've found that it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you look good wearing it.

You have to find your style, your colours and your fit.

For example, my brother could wear a dirty shirt and pair of jeans with cow blood in his steel to capped boots but he managed to attract women because that's how he's supposed to look. He was comfortable.

Be comfortable wearing it...If you're not comfortable, you're gonna be lonely that night!

Find some newer clothes and try things out with the help of your buddies if you are in that much doubt but the rule as I see it is as long as you're comfortable with what you have on, you'll be confident enough to meet women and you'll be radiating that confidence, which is what they love!

everyone thinks I have 2 pairs of pants and over 1,000 shirts, but in reality I bought a bunch of the same pants I like. They always ask me how I keep my pants so clean. I really just throw on clothes that are comfortable and people are neutral to nice to me, so I think I just have an instinct for this thing that I don't know about and just happens.

Clothes matter sometimes. If I remember correctly when I met my GF (We been together almost a year) I was wearing Pajama Pants that had bananas on. LOL.

I like to be comfortable, Most of the time I'm wearing some kind of Pajama pants, I don't really anymore, Going for the Loose Jean T-Shirt and Hoodie Look for 2007.

I have So many different pairs of pajama pants, Although I don't wear them to sleep in.?.? Some things on my PJ's are like, bananas, these miami ink ones that got this dragon on, like 10 pairs of different shades of blue plad.

Along with the PJ pants I normally wear a t-shirt, I purposely buy t-shirts to either piss people off, offend people, or test the rules of the dress code at school.

My newest shirt i got a week ago from spencer's, It says: Of course I love you, My dick is hard isn't it? Had to buy it, It was funny, and I love to test the rules.

I have one that says: God Hates Me, Wearing that deams me to hell for a day, meaning having half the town I live in preach to me saying god loves me, firstly it's a joke, secondly go away.

Bob Marley Shirts, Pot leaf shirts, And tons of band t-shirts.

Finally someone who doesn't have to pay over ridiculous prices for their clothes, I can't stand some people, Particularly the ones who refuse to shop at any place like walmart or kmart, Because they can't pay $10 for something, The rather go half way across the town/state to some Overpriced name brand place and pay $80 more for the same exact shirt, only difference it the 1 inch by 1 inch logo located on the bottom right corner for everyone to see.

Congrats! you just paid eighty fucking dollars for a little logo the size of my nipple. WoW you asshole.

I like to buy name brand clothes, but I will buy something at wally world for 10 bucks instead of paying loads for it elsewhere,

But Shoes, I can't buy shoes from walmart or k-mart, Not because they are cheap, but because they don't have what I want, I have become very particular about shoes, They gotta be the nice WIDE skate shoes. laces fat and don't need to be tied. And the have to be fabric they can't be that shit that starts peeling off in a few days.

Last summer I bought a pair of etnies, approx. $70 within a week the coating stuff on the outside was peeling away and with a month or two the fabric on the inside was worn away exposing that hard plastic thing that hurts the hell outta ur ankle. I was like wow WTF these shoes are shit. And I went to like 3 different stores looking for that exact pair.

Ok I'm tired of talking about my self and the stuff I buy, Somebody else start talkin.

Yes, clothes are very important for first impressions.

Dress to impress without looking like you're trying to hard. Dress for power.

Beh, what looks good depends on what yoy look like, who you are, what you do, how you act, so you'd probably do well to let one of your friends take you shopping. Try on different shit to see what suits you. Consider fashion, but think about classics and quality too.

Your look sounds pretty slobby. At least try something new, you might find you like it. A new look can give you a shit tonne of confidence.

How old are you? If you've been wearing that for a real long time, then you're probably growing out of it or it's starting to look childish. You can still do that casual style but on a more grown up level. Even if it's just changing the cut, colour or fit of the jeans and t-shirts you wear, or wearing something different every now and again.

Oh, and don't wear the same shit for every occasion. At least wear something a tiiiinyy bit different depending on what you're doing.

pix would really help =]

I agree clothes make a difference, but I think wearing something you feel comfortable in is far more important than wearing clothes that 'girls like'.

My boyfriend wears a jeans and some variety of black tshirt pretty much all the time, and they really suit him. I can't imagine him in something more formal.

Ok, so I guess there are limits, like wearing really dirty clothes, or ones that are completely falling apart, and there will always be some girls who will refuse to take interest unless you dress a particular way with designer clothes etc... but that's still just a waste of time IMHO.

I do agree with Isobutane thought that if you dont have a tonne of confidence already that getting a new look or changing something about it might really help.

Expensive isn't of course synonymous with tasteful, and tasteful or sexy clothes don't have to be expensive.

A surprising body of my wardrobe is second hand.. but they don't make dresses how they used to, so I have little choice.

There's a huge difference between walmart shit and real clothes. walmart is a lot cheaper, but clothes you can get at "nice" stores are waaaaay more comfortable. The main difference is that the nice stores usually sell clothes made in first-world countries.

But the thing is, you're really not paying for the clothes, you're paying for the confidence. wearing expensive clothes feels WAY better than wearing cheapass walmart shit.

Not to say that that always justifies buying expensive shit.

I dress like a homeless hippy and nothing could suit me better right now. I generally have red leather shoes, too much jewlery, crazy slept on hair, alot of long shirts and baggy pants or skirts, anything light and breezy. I don't wear a bra half the time, never wear panties.

I get a few comments, I think most of them are compliments. Mindyou - I don't get laid, so my advice really might not help you.

Default Re: Do clothes really matter/make an impression?

When I was in high school and my early years of college, I dressed like a lot of the people in this thread say they dress. I wore band shirts, plain clothes, etc. I thought this was because I didn't care what I wore.

But that was bullshit.

Now, I dress heavily on the preppy side. I look like I shop at Abercrombie and Hollister. Sometimes I do, but a lot of that stuff is expensive so I'm more than happy to buy stuff that looks the same for a cheaper price elsewhere. I own four pairs of shoes (Eastland, New Balance, Steve Madden, and Florsheim) in addition to the combat boots issued to me along with my military issued dress shoes. I own three Versace suits and one Brioni suit, but I typically wear Linea Dome (which is a Japanese suit manufacturer) because it's cheaper.

I give less of a shit now than I did in high school and college. This is because I would go OUT OF MY WAY to not dress preppy.

Now, however, I dress in whatever looks good on me. I don't consider it to be "dressing like something I'm not" because the clothes don't make the person. I dress the way I dress because I look damn good in these clothes.

Whether or not you want to believe it, the way you dress holds water to the way people perceive you, and more often than not, it also represents how you WANT to be perceived. If you dress like you don't care, then you are perceived to be apathetic, and that's a characteristic many people would consider to be a flaw. If you dress to look good, you are perceived as wanting to be good.

You can be confident as fuck in whatever you want, but if it looks ugly to someone else, they're less likely to want to be around it.

You're not your fucking khaki's, but you are the choices you make.

It doesn't really matter in the winter because i'm always wearing the same hat/jacket and all my pants are dark blue/black so you can't really notice it. I still have a shitload of shirts though. Just go to winners and pick out a bunch of shit it's cheap and they have nice "collard shirts". I'm always the kid wearing an army cargo jacket with a green hat but no one really says anything about it. Probably because they know my jackets better then theirs

True, but not always, Some expenisve clothes don't hold up as well. I'm not saying I don't buy name brand shit. I'm just saying I DON'T HAVE to have all name brand clothes. I'm willing to wear clothes from walmart.

Don't know if anyone noticed but the prices at walmart are steadily rising. I remember like 4 years ago when Wallyworld was always showing the "rollBack" commersials. The prices then were atleast 20 - 30 % lower than they are now. although the price of everything seems to be going up..

Of course clothing matters..... how you dress is a way to express your personality before even opening your mouth.

I used to dress really well back when I had a personality but now I'm on strong medication that negates any personality I had I just wear jeans, tshirts and usually two or three jumpers because it's fucking freezing and I don't have a coat. And you know what.... when I dressed in a quirky way that expressed who I was I used to pull and hell of a lot more than I do now I just dress like every one else.

And another thing..... the guy going on about all his comedy t-shirts and ones with pot leaves on a stuff.... that's going to be funny for all of 5 mins when you show your new purcahses to your mates.... but in my experience.... us girls really really don't go for stupid comedy slogan tshirts.... they're not actually that funny (well except some of them on t-shirt hell) I personally hate them.

Heh, I'm not surpised to hear that most totseans don't know how to dress. Most of you are americans afterall...

I used to be really shitty at it too, but then my sisters started giving me some tips. By accident I sorta had a fashion consultant tell me what looked good on me and man once you've tried wearing a cool outfit that makes you look great... You just can't go back to shitty clothing.

For me it's been a great help with the ladies. Seems it makes an impression, that you know how to dress well. I mean think about it, a hot chick who doesn't know how to make herself look her best, or a hot chick who wears ugly clothes...? You're always gonna give the well dressed one a second look.

Fuck dude, make sure you have 3-4 pairs of jeans for the week, get a new pair whenever you feel the need and your pretty much set.

For shirts, make sure you have at least 4, get a new one whenever you get holes ion one, or it they get old and 'faded looking', if your in walmart and see a nice looking button up that you like for 5$, pick it up. Make sure you always have clean socks, probably black or grey. And always (i know it sounds gay) wear clean underwear, or youll smell of swass (sweaty ass).

Keep a hoodie on if you want, try to not get 'attached' to it, dont overwear stuff.

Remember people are shallow as fuck, or they think clothes reflect who you are. All im trying to get across is that you should stay clean and not stink. This stuff subconsciously affects people.

Honestly though, ask yourselves how often you even consciously look at someone else's clothing? Maybe it's on a subconscious level, but I never consciously say to myself "damn that kid's clothing is hideous, fuck talking to him."

Even with girls, I don't care what they're wearing, as long as their ass looks dope and their tits are being shown off.

I dunno, though, maybe it's me. Does anyone here consciously judge someone else's clothes? Because I just don't notice.
